This study was designed to fabricate the micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) parts such as micro spur gears using hot extrusion of gas atomized Al-78Zn powders. For this purpose, it is important to develop new methods to fabricate micro-dies and choose suitable extrusion conditions for a micro-forming. Micro-dies with Ni were fabricated by LIGA technology. LIGA technology was capable to produce micro-extrusion dies with close tolerances, thick bearing length and adequate surface quality. Superplastic Al-78Zn powders have the great advantage in achieving deformation under low stresses and exhibiting good micro formability with average strain rates ranging from $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-2}\;s^{-1}$ and constant temperatures ranging from 503 to 563K. Al-78Zn powders were compacted into a cylindrical shape (${\Phi}3{\times}h10$) under compressive force of 10kN and, subsequently, the compacted powders were extruded at 563k in a hot furnace. Micro-extrusion has succeeded in forming micro-gear shafts.
Gears are produced through a variety of methods. In general, a metal piece is formed into the general shape of a gear through rough cuts. The gear then moves on to a more precise machine that removes more material. Grinders work via abrasion, rubbing a rough surface against a work piece at such high speeds that it literally scrapes unwanted material away from the item. Since the grinder is spinning so fast, the material is removed very quickly. This allows a grinder to remove a very small amount without taking any unwanted material with it. This study investigates the effect of grinding process parameters like grinding spindle speed and table transfer speed on the gear grade and grinding efficiency.
A planetary gear train is more compact and endures greater amounts of transmission power compared to other gear systems. Although planetary gear systems operate in small volumes, they are capable of very high efficiency due to the compact combination of their gears in the planetary gear system. They also have outstanding efficiency of only 3% for power transmission, tantamount to the power loss that occurs in each of the shift stages. Given these advantages, planetary gear systems are used in the driving systems of, which are widely used in automobile transmissions, machine tools, semiconductor equipment, and in other areas in industrial fields. Current structural equipment requires higher efficiency and greater torque levels. According to these needs, we have designed a complex planetary gear system which creates higher levels of torque. In this paper, an evaluation of strength designs for the proposed planetary gear system was conducted to ensure the stability of the gear. In addition, a durability analysis based on Miner's rule was performed using RS B 0095 device.
This paper presents the development of the transfer case for a 3.5-ton commercial vehicle. A transfer case is composed of many parts, including helical gear, shaft, bearing, planetary gear, and others. Helical gears are currently used as power transmitting gears due to their relatively smooth and silent operation, large load carrying capacity, and operation at higher speeds. The key parameter in transfer case development is the bending stress at the root of a tooth in the helical gear. The bending stress of the helical gear has been studied through theoretical calculation and finite element method (FEM) analysis. Major factors of the bending stress calculation are determined according to American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA) standards, and FEM model analysis of the helical gear is conducted. FEM results are compared with theoretical calculations and the difference of the bending stress is described.
The core of the automotive industry's strategy to handle the climate change can be explained as the development and distribution of the vehicles with high fuel efficiencies and low emission. Clean Diesel, hydrogen fuel cell, electric, and especially hybrid power-train vehicles have been actively studied. This paper dynamically analyzes the performance of a hybrid system's five driving modes. The research subject consists of one engine, two electric motors, two simple planetary gears, and one compound planetary gears with five clutches. To define the steady state equation of the system, interaction formulas of five driving modes are introduced with motion variables and torque variables. These formulas are then used to analyze the speeds, torques, and power flows of each mode.
This paper describes the development of a thigh wearable robot for power assistance during stair climbing. In the wearable robot developed in this study, high-power BLDC motors and high-capacity harmonic reduction gears are used to effectively assist the thigh muscle during stair climbing. In particular, normal ground and stair are distinguished accurately by using wireless smart shoes, and the stair climbing assistance is performed by activating the actuators at an appropriate time. Impedance of the hip joint was effectively reduced by performing friction compensation of the gears, and a wearing adjustment mechanism was designed to fit the robot to the thigh by conveniently modifying the width and tilting angle of the robot using set collars. Consequently, the performance of the developed thigh wearable robot was verified through stair climbing experiments with EMG measurement.

In recent years, the concern of designing multi-stage gear drives ha increased with more application of them in high-speed and high-load. Until now, however, the researches on the design of gear drives have been focused on single gear pairs. Thus the design practice for multi-stage gear drives has been depended on experiences and expertise of designers and carried out commonly by trial and error. We propose an automation algorithm for the design of two-and three-strage cylindrical gear drives. The two types of dimensional design processes have been proposed to determine gear dimensions in a formal way. The first design process(Process I) uses to total volume of gears to determine gear ration , and uses K factor , unit load and aspect ration to determine gear dimensions, The second one(Process II) makes use of Niemann's formula and center distance to calculate gear ratio and gear dimensions. Process I and Process II employ material date from AGMA and ISO standards, respectively. The configuration design determines the positions of gears with minimizing the volume of gearbox by using a simulated annealing algorithm. The availability of the design algorithm is validated by the design examples to two-and three=stage gear drives.
In recent years, automotive seat components have been manufactured by the fine blanking process, allowing an improvement of dimensional accuracy at sheared surface in series production. However, the rollover has increased and die failures have occurred more frequently when manufacturing gears by fine blanking. Consequently, important goals for manufacturing seat recliner parts with gears have been to decrease the rollover as well as to improve the tool life. In this study, the half blanking and shaving processes were introduced to improve aforementioned problems for the lower tooth, the main component of a seat recliner. For this purpose, the half blanking process was optimized using the finite element (FE) analysis and design of experiment (DOE). The optimized conditions resulting from this study were an offset of 0.2 mm, a clearance of 0.1 mm and a penetration depth of 4.5 mm. Fine blanking experiment conducted under the optimal condition resulted in a rollover depth decrease from 1.9 to 1.3 mm, and no die failure occurrence.
The purpose of this paper is to study and analyze the failure examples on tribological characteristics of an automotive steering system. In this failure study, the grease leakage may stick leaked grease, dust, and wear particles between pinion and rack gears in mechanical steering system. In the case of seal failures such as a rod seal, o-ring and oil seals, the gear box and oil pump do not operate properly due to lack of oils. This means that oil pump does not supply a working fluid and produce a normal oil pressure of the steering system. This leads to leak a working fluid from the seals and produce a wear between pinion and rack gears. Especially, the leaked oil is usually mixed with internal wear particles and foreign dust/fine sands. Thus no leakage of working oils is very important design concepts, which is strongly related to the sealing components and smoothly operating of the mechanical friction parts of power steering system.
