  • In medical visualization, volume visualization is widely used. Applying 3D images to diagnose requires high resolution and accurately implement visualization techniques are being researched accordingly. However, when a three-dimensional image volume visualization is implemented using volume data, aliasing will occur since using discrete data. Supersampling method, getting lots of samples, is used to reduce artifacts. One of the supersampling methods is Catmull-rom spline. This method calculates accurate interpolation value because it is easy to compute and pass through control points. But, Catmull-rom spline method occurs overshoot or undershoot in large gradient of pixel values. So, interpolated values are different from original signal. In this paper, we propose an adaptive adjusting weights interpolation method using Gaussian function. Proposed method shows that overshoot is reduced on the point has a large gradient and PSNR is higher than other interpolated image results.

  • We propose a group-based security scheme for hierarchical wireless sensor networks. We model the network for secure routing with 3-tier sensor network comprised of three types of nodes: Base Station, Group Dominator and ordinary Sensor Nodes. Group-based deployment is performed using Gaussian (normal) distribution and show that more than 85% network connectivity can be achieved with the proposed model. The small groups with pre-shared secrets form the secure groups where group dominators form the backbone of the entire network. The scheme is devised for dealing with sensory data aggregated by groups of collocated sensors; i.e., local sensed data are collected by the dominating nodes and sent an aggregated packet to the base station via other group dominators. The scheme is shown to be light-weight, and it offers a stronger defense against node capture attacks. Analysis and simulation results are presented to defend our proposal. Analysis shows that robustness can significantly be improved by increasing the deployment density using both the dominating and/or ordinary sensor nodes.

  • In recent years, the interests and needs of the Pedestrian Protection System (PPS), which is mounted on the vehicle for the purpose of traffic safety improvement is increasing. In this paper, we propose a pedestrian candidate window extraction and unit cell histogram based HOG descriptor calculation methods. At pedestrian detection candidate windows extraction stage, the bright ratio of pedestrian and its circumference region, vertical edge projection, edge factor, and PCA reconstruction image are used. Dalal's HOG requires pixel based histogram calculation by Gaussian weights and trilinear interpolation on overlapping blocks, But our method performs Gaussian down-weight and computes histogram on a per-cell basis, and then the histogram is combined with the adjacent cell, so our method can be calculated faster than Dalal's method. Our PCA reconstruction error based pedestrian detection candidate window extraction method efficiently classifies background based on the difference between pedestrian's head and shoulder area. The proposed method improves detection speed compared to the conventional HOG just using image without any prior information from camera calibration or depth map obtained from stereo cameras.

  • In the two-dimensional (2D) modeling of electrical method, the potential in the space domain is reconstructed with the calculated potentials in the wavenumber domain using inverse Fourier transform. The inverse Fourier integral is numerically evaluated using the transformed potential at different wavenumbers. In order to improve the precision of the integration, either the logarithmic or exponential approximation has been used depending on the size of wavenumber. Two numerical methods have been generally used to evaluate the integral; interval integration and Gaussian quadrature. However, both methods do not consider the distance from the current source. Thus the resulting potential in the space domain shows some error. Especially when the distance from the current source is very small or large, the error increases abruptly and the evaluated potential becomes extremely unstable. In this study, we developed a new method to calculate the integral accurately by introducing the distance from the current source to the rescaled Gauss abscissa and weight. The numerical tests for homogeneous half-space model show that the developed method can yield the error level lower than 0.4 percent over the various distances from the current source.

  • In this paper, we propose a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) based incremental robust adaptation with a forgetting factor for the speaker verification. Speaker recognition system uses a speaker model adaptation method with small amounts of data in order to obtain a good performance. However, a conventional adaptation method has vulnerable to the outlier from the irregular utterance variations and the presence noise, which results in inaccurate speaker model. As time goes by, a rate in which new data are adapted to a model is reduced. The proposed algorithm uses an incremental robust adaptation in order to reduce effect of outlier and use forgetting factor in order to maintain adaptive rate of new data on GMM based speaker model. The incremental robust adaptation uses a method which registers small amount of data in a speaker recognition model and adapts a model to new data to be tested. Experimental results from the data set gathered over seven months show that the proposed algorithm is robust against outliers and maintains adaptive rate of new data.

  • Digital processing technologies are being studied in various areas of image compression, recognition and recovery. However, image deterioration still occurs due to the noises in the process of image acquisition, storage and transmission. Generally in the typical noises which are included in the images, there are Gaussian noise and the mixed noise where the Gaussian noise and impulse noise are overlapped and in order to remove these noises, various researches are being executed. In order to preserve the edge and effectively remove mixed noises, image recovery filter algorithm was suggested in this study which sets and processes the adaptive weight using the median values and average values after noise judgment. Additionally, existing methods were compared through simulations and PSNR(peak signal to noise ratio) was used as a judgment standard.

  • In many continuous speech recognition systems based on HMMs, decision tree-based state tying has been used for not only improving the robustness and accuracy of context dependent acoustic modeling but also synthesizing unseen models. To construct the phonetic decision tree, standard method performs one-level pruning using just single Gaussian triphone models. In this paper, two novel approaches, two-level decision tree and multi-mixture decision tree, are proposed to get better performance through more accurate acoustic modeling. Two-level decision tree performs two level pruning for the state tying and the mixture weight tying. Using the second level, the tied states can have different mixture weights based on the similarities in their phonetic contexts. In the second approach, phonetic decision tree continues to be updated with training sequence, mixture splitting and re-estimation. Multi-mixture Gaussian as well as single Gaussian models are used to construct the multi-mixture decision tree. Continuous speech recognition experiment using these approaches on BN-96 and WSJ5k data showed a reduction in word error rate comparing to the standard decision tree based system given similar number of tied states.

  • In this thesis, an enhanced method for the feature extraction of vocal source signals and score combination using an MCE-Based weight estimation of the score of multiple feature vectors are proposed for the performance improvement of speaker recognition systems. The proposed feature vector is composed of perceptual linear predictive cepstral coefficients, skewness, and kurtosis extracted with lowpass filtered glottal flow signals to eliminate the flat spectrum region, which is a meaningless information section. The proposed feature was used to improve the conventional speaker recognition system utilizing the mel-frequency cepstral coefficients and the perceptual linear predictive cepstral coefficients extracted with the speech signals and Gaussian mixture models. In addition, to increase the reliability of the estimated scores, instead of estimating the weight using the probability distribution of the convectional score, the scores evaluated by the conventional vocal tract, and the proposed feature are fused by the MCE-Based score combination method to find the optimal speaker. The experimental results showed that the proposed feature vectors contained valid information to recognize the speaker. In addition, when speaker recognition is performed by combining the MCE-based multiple feature parameter scores, the recognition system outperformed the conventional one, particularly in low Gaussian mixture cases.

  • The Barnes scheme is used in Digital Forecast System (DFS) of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) for real-time analysis. This scheme is an objective analysis scheme with a distance-dependent weighted average. It has been widely used for mesoscale analyses in limited geographic areas. The isotropic Gaussian weight function with a constant effective radius might not be suitable for certain conditions. In particular, the analysis error can be increased for stations located near mountains. The terrain of South Korea is covered with mountains and wide plains that are between successive mountain ranges. Thus, it is needed to consider the terrain effect with the information of elevations for each station. In order to improve the accuracy of the temperature objective analysis, we modified the weight function which is dependent on a distance and elevation in the Barnes scheme. We compared the results from the Barnes scheme used in the DFS (referred to CTL) with the new scheme (referred to EXP) during a year of 2009 in this study. The analysis error of the temperature field was verified by the root-mean-square-error (RMSE), mean error (ME), and Priestley skill score (PSS) at the DFS observation stations which is not used in objective analysis. The verification result shows that the RMSE and ME values are 1.68 and -0.41 in CTL and 1.42 and -0.16 in EXP, respectively. In aspect of spatial verification, we found that the RSME and ME values of EXP decreased in the vicinity of Jirisan (Mt. Jiri) and Taebaek Mountains. This indicates that the new scheme performed better in temperature verification during the year 2009 than the previous scheme.

  • In this paper a watermarking algorithm is proposed to optimize the capacity of the digital watermark insertion in an experimental threshold using the characteristics of human visual system(HVS), adaptive scale factors, and weight functions based on discrete wavelet transform. After the original image is decomposed by a 3-level discrete wavelet transform, the watermarks for capacity optimization are inserted into all subbands except the baseband, by applying the important coefficients from the experimental threshold in the wavelet region. The adaptive scale factors and weight functions based on HVS are considered for the capacity optimization of the digital watermark insertion in order to enhance the robustness and invisibility. The watermarks are consisted of gaussian random sequences and detected by correlation. The experimental results showed that this algorithm can preserve a fine image quality against various attacks such as the JPEG lossy compression, noise addition, cropping, blurring, sharpening, linear and non-linear filtering, etc.
