The appearance of some gastrointestinal endocrine cells in the Meckel's diverticulum (MD) of the bean goose, Anser fabalis Latham was observed using specific antisera against serotonin, gastrin, cholecystokinin (CCK)-8, glucagon, secretin, somatostatin and human pancreatic polypeptide (HPP) with the peroxidase antiperoxidase (PAP) method. Among these specific antisera, serotonin-, gastrin-, CCK-8-, somatostatin- and HPP-immunoreactive cells were demonstrated in this study. Serotonin-, gastrin- and somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were detected at moderate frequency and CCK-8- and HPP-immunoreactive cells was rare and low frequencies, respectively. These immunoreactive cells were located in the superficial epithelium, intestinal crvpt and intestinal glands with spherical or spindle shaped cells having long cytoplasmic processes (open typed-cell). Mucosal layer of MD was composed of simple columnar epithelium and numerous intestinal glands. In addition, numerous lymphatic tissues were also demonstrated. In conclusion, histological profiles of MD were similar to any parts of the large intestine, especially the cecum, but the appearance, distribution and relative frequency of gastrointestinal endocrine cells were similar to those of upper parts of the small intestine. Although the exact digestive functions were unknown, the finding that the appearance, distribution and relative frequency of gastrointestinal endocrine cells in MD is similar to small intestine may be considered as distinct evidence that this organ may have some digestive functions.
In the present paper, the distribution, relative frequences and cell types of endocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract of the frog (Rana dybowskii) during the hibernating and the active phase were examined by light and electron microscopy. The results obtained are summarized as follow: The reactive cells for Grimelius were frequently found in the gastrointestinal tract, whereas the reactive cells for Hellman-$Hellerstr{\hat{o}}m$ were found numerous in the fundus and pylorus of stomach, a few in the duodenum and lower small intestine, and very few in the rectum during both phases. No reactive cells for Masson-Fontana were found in the gastrointestinal tract during both phases. Elecron microscopically, 4 types of endocrine cells in the fundus of the stomach, 3 types in the pylorus of the stomach and duodenum, and 1 type in the lower small intestine and rectum, respectively, were identified during the hibernating phase. In the active phase, 3 types of endocrine cell in the fundus of the stomach, 2 types in the pylorus of the stomach and duodenum, and 1 type in the lower small intestine and rectum were observed, respectively. In the hibernating phase, more cytoplasmic granules and various types of endocrine cells were generally found than in the active phase.
The regional distributions and relative frequencies of some gastrointestinal endocrine cells in the 8 portions (fundus, pylorus, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, colon and rectum) of the gastrointestinal tract of ICR mouse (ICR) with immunohistochemical method using 7 types of specific antisera against somatostatin, serotonin, glucagon, cholecystokinin (CCK)-8, secretin, pancreatic polypeptide (PP) and gastrin. In this study, somatostatin-, serotonin-, glucagon-, CCK-8-, secretin- and gastrin-immunoreactive (IR) cells were identified. Most of these IR cells in the intestinal portion were generally spherical or spindle in shape (open-typed cell) while cells showing round in shape (close-typed cell) were found in the stomach regions occasionally. Their relative frequencies were varied according to each portion of gastrointestinal tract. Somatostatin-IR cells were demonstrated throughout whole gastrointestinal tract except for large intestine. Serotonin-IR cells were detected throughout whole gastrointestinal tract and they were most predominant endocrine cell types in this species of mouse. Glucagon-IR cells were restricted to the fundus and rectum with moderate and a few frequencies, respectively. CCK-8-IR cells were observed in the pylorus, duodenum and ileum with numerous, moderate and rare frequencies, respectively. Secretin-IR cells were restricted to the duodenum and ileum with a few and rare frequencies, respectively. Gastrin-IR cells were restricted to the pylorus with numerous frequency. However, no PP-IR cells were found in this study. In conclusion, some peculiar distributional patterns of gastrointestinal endocrine cells were found in the ICR mouse compared to those of other mammals.
The gastrointestinal endocrine cells of the African clawed toad, Xenopus laevis have been investigated immunohistochemically using the avidin-biotin method. Seven antisera were tested and three endocrine cell types immunoreacted with antisera to neurotensin, GRP and substance P. A moderate number of neurotensin-immunoreactive cells were weakly reacted in the small intestine. GRP-immunoreactive cells were mainly situated among the upper portion in the fundic glands, and the basal portion in the pyloric glands. These cells were oval and round in shape. On the other hand, in the intestine they were thin spindly cells with the epithelium. Substance P-immunoreactive cells were observed in among intestinal epithelium. However, no secretin-, motilin-, M-Enk- and PYY-immunoreactive cells were found in the GIT of the African clawed toads.
The distribution and the frequency of endocrine cells in the GIT of the Amur lizard(Takydromus amurensis) were investigated using silver techniques and immunohistochemical method. Only argyrophil cells stained by the Grimelius technique were found numerous in the pyloric glands and moderate in the duodenum. Two types of immunoreactive endocrine cells were identified by immunohistochemical method. Bovine CG-immunoreactive cells were demonstrated the entire GIT. BPP-immunoreactive cells were restricted in the duodenum and the ileum. The results showed that: the number of argyrophil cells was lower than the number of cells stained with bovine CG antiserum. Therefore, bovine CG-immunostaining and the Grimelius silver technique did not correspond with various endocrine cells in the Amur lizard.
The regional distributions and frequencies of argentaffin endocrine cells in gastrointestinal (GI) tract of osteoporotic Sprague-Dawley rat induced by ovariectomy were studied by Masson-Hamperl silver stain. The experimental animals were divided into two groups, one is non-ovariectomized group (Sham) and the other is ovariectomized group (OVX). Samples were collected from each part of GI tract (fundus, pylorus, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, colon and rectum) at 10th week after ovariectomy or sham operation. Argentaffin cells were detected throughout the entire GI tract with various frequencies regardless of ovariectomy except for the rectum of OVX in which no cells were detected. Most of these argentaffin cells in the mucosa of GI tract were generally spherical or spindle in shape (open type cell) while cells showing round in shape (close type cell) were rarely found in gland regions. Significant decrease of argentaffin cells was detected in OVX compared to that of Sham except for the fundus and jejunum. However, in the fundus and jejunum, argentaffin cells in OVX showed similar frequency compared to that of Sham. In conclusion, the endocrine cells are the anatomical units responsible for the production of gut hormones that regulate gut motility and digestion including absorption, and a change in their density would reflect the change in the capacity of producing these hormones and regulating gut motility and digestion. Ovariectomy induced severe quantitative changes of GI argentaffin endocrine cell density, and the abnormality in density of GI endocrine cells may contribute to the development of gastrointestinal symptoms in osteoporosis such as impairments of calcium and some lipids, frequently encountered in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis.
The regional distribution and relative frequency of gastrointestinal endocrine cells were studied immunohistochemically in the gastrointestinal mucosa and pancreas of the fresh water turtle. Ten kinds of endocrine cells were identified in the gastrointestinal tract. Cholecystokinin-8-, bovine pancreatic polypetide-and glucagon-immunoreactive cells were seen throughout the gastrointestinal tract, also among them cholecystokinin-8-immunoreactive cells were most predominant in segment III. Although gastrin- and gastrin/cholecystokinin-immunoreactive cells were found from segment III to VI and X, respectively, they were numerous in segment III. Somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were observed from segment I to VII. 5-hydroxytryptamine- immunoreactive cells were detected in segment I, III, VIII, IX and X. Human pancreatic polypeptide-immunoreactive cells were demonstrated in segment V, VI, VIII, IX and X. Insulin-immunoreactive cells were found from segment III to X except for segment VIII, but rare in segment VII. Neurotensin-immunoreactive cells were found to be restricted to segment VIII, IX and X. No porcine chromogranin-, substance P- and bombesin-immunoreactive cells were detected throughout the gastrointestinal tract of the fresh water turtle. Although typical mammalian pancreatic islets encapsulated by connective tissue were not present in this species, five kinds of endocrine cells-glucagon, insulin, somatostatin, bovine pancreatic polypeptide and 5-hydroxytryptamine-were found in forming small or large groups and scattered in the exocrine gland region. However porcine chromogranin- and motilin-immunoreactive cells could not be demonstrated in the pancreas.
We report a rare case of the coexistence of a gastric small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma with a gastric adenocarcinoma. A 62-year-old man presented with epigastric soreness for 1 month. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed a Borrmann type I tumor at the lesser curvature of the lower body of the stomach. The patient underwent a distal gastrectomy with D2 lymph node dissection and the resected specimen exhibited a $3.5{\times}3.5$ cm sized, fungating lesion. Two separated, not intermingling, lesions with non-adenocarcinoma components encircled by well differentiated adenocarcinoma components were identified microscopically. The non-adenocarcinoma component showed neuroendocrine features, such as a solid and trabecular pattern, and the tumor cells showed a high nuclear grade with minimal cytoplasm, indistinct nucleoli, and positive response for synaptophysin, CD56. The final pathological diagnosis was a gastric mixed exocrine-endocrine carcinoma (MEEC) composed of an adenocarcinoma and small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the collision type.
Endocrine cells were observed in the gastrointestinal tract of the squirrels by light microscopy using Grimelius and Masson-Hamperl silver impregnation, and in the stomach and duodenum by electron microscopy. Light microscopically, argyrophil cell decreased gradually in number in the pyloric region and ileum, stomach, duodenum and jejunum and rectum in the order listed. Argentaffin cells were moderately distributed in the stomach, pyloric region and duodenum, while absent in the jejunum, ileum and rectum. Five kinds of cell types, EC, ECL, D, $D_1$ and G cells were identified in the stomach and three kinds of cell types, S, $EC_1$ and $EC_2$ were also identified in the duodenum by electron microscopy. A cilium noted in the cytoplasm of $D_1$-type cell. The species differences in the distribution, size and structure of the secretory granules were discussed.
The gastrointestinal endocrine cells of the Korean native goat were studied immunohistochemically, and 5-HT-, somatostatin-, Gas/CCK-, glucagon-, chromogranin- and PP- immunoreactive cells were revealed. The characteristic findings of the regional distribution and relative frequency of these immunoreactive cells in the gastrointestinal tract of the Korean native goat were as follows. 5-HT-immunoreactive cells were more numerous in the small and large intestine than in the abdomen stomach. Somatostatin-immunoreactive cell were more numerous in the abdomen stomach than in the small and large intestine. Gas/CCK-immunoreactive cells were concentrated very numerously in the pyloric region with a few in the other regions. Moderate numbers of glucagon-immunoreactive cells were found in the small and large intestine, but a few of them were found in the abdomen stomach. Very numerous chromogranin-immunoreactive cells were detected throughout the gastrointestinal tract. PP-immunoreactive cells were observed moderate numbers in the large intestine with few in the ileum. No insulin-immunoreactive cell was found in the gastrointestinal tract.
