  • In order to maintain and manage ambient air quality, it is necessary to identify sources and to apportion its sources for ambient particulate matters. The receptor methods were one of the statistical methods to achieve reasonable air pollution strategies. Also, receptor methods, a field of chemometrics, is based on manifold applied statistics and is a statistical methodology that analyzes the physicochemical properties of gaseous and particulate pollutant on various atmospheric receptors, identifies the sources of air pollutants, and quantifies the apportionment of the sources to the receptors. The objective of this study was 1) after obtaining results from the PMF modeling, the existing sources of air at the study area were qualitatively identified and the contributions of each source were quantitatively estimated as well. 2) finally efficient air pollution management and control strategies of each source were suggested. The PMF model was intensively applied to estimate the quantitative contribution of air pollution sources based on the chemical information (128 samples and 25 chemical species). Through a case study of the PMF modeling for the PM-10 aerosols, the total of 11 factors were determined. The multiple linear regression analysis between the observed PM-10 mass concentration and the estimated G matrix had been performed following the FPEAK test. Finally the regression analysis provided quantitative source contributions (scaled G matrix) and source profiles (scaled F matrix). The results of the PMF modeling showed that the sources were apportioned by secondary aerosol related source 28.8 %, soil related source 16.8%, waste incineration source 11.5%, field burning source 11.0%, fossil fuel combustion source 10%, industry related source 8.3%, motor vehicle source 7.9%, oil/coal combustion source 4.4%, non-ferrous metal source 0.3%. and aged sea- salt source 0.2%, respectively.

  • In swine house, dust generation comes from various sources and is known to be harmful both for the animals and the farmers because the dust contains biological and gaseous matters. When farmers are constantly exposed to the dusts, they can suffer chronic or acute respiratory symptoms and have high probability of manifesting various diseases. To address this problem, understanding of the mechanism of dust generation is very important. In this paper, the dust concentration of inhalable, respirable, TSP and $PM_{10}$ were monitored and analyzed according to the pig-activity level, ventilation quantity and feeding method in fattening pig house. From the measured results, in case of the concentration of TSP, an inverse-linear relation with ventilation rate ($R^2=0.88$) and linear relation with the installation height of feed supply pipe ($R^2=0.73$) were determined. However in case of the concentration of $PM_{10}$, no particular relationship with the variables was observed. Using the concentration of inhalable and respirable dust based on the pig-activity level, multi-variate regression analysis was conducted and results have shown that the movement of pigs can contribute to the dust generation (p<0.05, $R^2=0.71$, 0.61). The relationship determined between dust generation and environmental variables investigated in this study is very significant and useful in conducting dust-reduction researches.

  • CMAQ (Community Multiscale Air Quality Model) simulations were carried out to estimate the potential range of contributions on surface $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations over the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) with the gaseous precursors and Primary Particulate Matters(PPM) available from a recent national emissions inventory. In detail, on top of a base simulation utilizing the 2013 Clean Air Policy Supporting System (CAPSS) emission inventory, a set of Brute Force Method (BFM) simulations after reducing anthropogenic $NO_x$, $SO_2$, $NH_3$, VOCs, and PPM emissions released from area, mobile, and point sources in SMA by 50% were performed in turn. Modeling results show that zero-out contributions(ZOC) of $NH_3$ and PPM emissions from SMA are as high as $4{\sim}5{\mu}g/m^3$ over the region during the modeling period. On the contrary, ZOC of local $NO_x$ and $SO_2$ emissions to SMA $PM_{2.5}$ are less than $1{\mu}g/m^3$. Moreover, model analyses indicate that a wintertime $NO_x$ reduction at least up to 50% increases SMA $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations, probably due to increased HNO3 formation and conversion to aerosols under more abundant ozone and radical conditions after the $NO_x$ reduction. However, a nation-wide $NO_x$ reduction decreased SMA $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations even during winter, which implies that nation-wide reductions would be more effective to curtail SMA $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations than localized efforts.

  • Emission characteristics from charbroiling of four different meats (beef, port, duck and chicken) in a pilot-scale cooking facility were investigated in this study. The analyzed air pollutants include gaseous species (CO, NO, $SO_2$, $NH_3$ and PAHs) as well as particulate matters (TSP, $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$ and black carbon). The emission factors of $PM_{10}$ and PAHs were in the range of 3~47 g-PM/kg-meat and 0.6~11.41 mg-PAHs/kg-meat, respectively, depending on the type of a meat. In addition, the results also revealed that the high ratio of $PM_{2.5}$ to TSP in a meat charbroiling should be considered to design and to operate air pollution control devices.

  • In this study, the generation and emission characteristics of particulate matter and gaseous matter in a mechanically ventilated layer house were evaluated. Each concentration of PM10, PM2.5, inhalable dust, respirable dust, and NH3 was measured and compared with occupational limit considering seasons and respiratory disorder. CAPPS (Clean Air Policy Support System) of the Ministry of Environment proposes the emission factors of PM10, PM2.5, and NH3 for a layer houses however, emission factors are still calculated from foreign factors such as CONINAIR values. As a result, it is urgent to develop national emission factors for domestic layer house. Emission coefficients of the studied mechanically-ventilated layer house in a summer season were calculated as 0.052 kg/head/year for PM10, about 12% lower than that of CAPSS, and 0.0068±0.0038 kg/head/year for PM2.5, showing no significant difference. Emission factor of NH3 was calculated as 0.159±0.031 kg/head/year, about 51% lower than that of CAPSS.

  • Purpose: Odor generated in traditional markets causes discomfort, hindering the pleasant life of residents, and complaints of odors are steadily increasing every year. Odor is defined as a smell that stimulates a person's sense of smell by stimulating hydrogen sulfide, mercaptans, amines, and other irritating gaseous substances. Research design, data and methodology: It is not easy to grasp and manage the current status of the odor analysis of living odors such as traditional markets. Seongnam City has an advanced new town of Bundang and Pangyo, while old cities such as Sujeong-gu are relatively underdeveloped. Results: As a result, the gap between the old city center and the new city center widens, so it is urgent to develop a balanced development. Based on this, the market of Seongnam-si is divided into the old city center and the new city center, and the odor complaint in the traditional market is analyzed to find a solution. A survey was conducted to understand the current status of odor management in the Seongnam-si market and the odor felt by users. Moran Market, Seongnam Jungang Market, and Kumho Market and Dolphin Market, located in the new city center, were selected as targets. The items of the survey consisted of the frequency and cause of the odor, the current status of market management, matters that need improvement, and efforts to resolve the odor. Conclusions: Therefore, this study aims to help citizens feel better about odor environment in places where odor standards are exceeded or complaints occur frequently, and to help local governments and market merchants establish more efficient and useful development plans.

  • The commercial charcoal kiln was projected the largest source of biomass burning sector in Korea. Commercial charcoal kiln was operated to emit air pollutants into the air without any air pollution prevention equipment. The object of this field survey was to understand characteristics of air pollutants concentration and emission factors and to provide preliminary data for effective processor from oak charcoal manufacturing process. As result of field survey, TSP, $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ concentration from charcoal kiln were 400~37,000 $mg/m^3$. These values were over the 100 $mg/m^3$ in TSP, this value was effluent quality standard of Clean Air Conservation Act. The average concentration of CO, $SO_2$ and TVOC were 2~5%. 0~110 ppm and 820~10,000 ppm respectively. The emission factors were 42.4 g-PM/kg-oak in TSP, 40.3 g-PM/kg-oak in $PM_{10}$, 38.2 g-PM/kg-oak in $PM_{2.5}$, 182.5 g-CO/kg-oak, 1.0 g-NO/kg-oak, $SO_2$ 0.2 g-$SO_2/kg$-oak and 104.4 g-TVOC/kg-oak. The part of commercial charcoal kiln had air pollution prevention equipment but it was difficult to work properly. Much wood tar excreted in exhaust emissions from oak charcoal manufacturing process. This wood tar was cause of many troubles sticking in the air pollutant prevention equipment. For handling particulate matters and gaseous air pollutants from oak charcoal manufacturing process in biomass burning, air pollutant prevention equipment design and management needs preprocessor for removal wood tar.

  • The environmental behavior of $SO_2$ was investigated in terms of the factors affecting the temporal variabilities by analyzing the data sets obtained from the Yongsan district in Seoul from 2004 till 2013. To this end, the relationship between $SO_2$ and relevant parameters including particulate matters (such as $PM_{2.5}$, $PM_{10}$, and TSP (total suspended particulates)) and gaseous components ($CH_4$, CO, THC (total hydrocarbon), NMHC (non-methane hydrocarbon), NO, $NO_2$, NOx, and $O_3$) was investigated in several aspects. Over a decade, the annual mean concentrations of $SO_2$ varied in the range of $4.36-5.86nmole\;mole^{-1}$ (min-max) which was about five times lower than the regulation guideline set for the air quality management in Korea. In fact, this pattern greatly contrasts with some other air pollutants of which concentrations exceeded their guideline values significantly. According to our analysis, $SO_2$ was strongly correlated to the temperature and other relevant parameters. The overall results of this study confirm that the administrative regulation of $SO_2$ levels has been made effectively relative to other airborne pollutants.

  • In order to establish the efficient sod production and soil management, there is a need to perform research on the growing condition of zoysiagrass on soil environments. With an attempt to identify the growth of zoysiagrass and the chemical characteristics of soil according to different growing seasons, this study was carried out in separate areas where zoysiagrass has been grown for 1 year, 10 years, 20 years, and 30 years. As the growing season became longer, bulk density of the soil was increased, porosity and gaseous phase were decreased. The level of pH was highest in the area where zoysiagrass has been produced for 30 years, whereas total nitrogen and organic matters were found to be the greatest in where zoysiagrass has been produced for 1 year. Accordingly, the chemical properties of soil were deteriorated more in the area with continuous cropping than in the area with 1 year of cropping. As the time period of producing zoysiagrass became longer, growth of shoot and root were decreased. In this study, it is required to produce zoysiagrass through soil improvement in areas that have been used for production for over 10 years.

  • An investigation was carried out to find out the effects of long-term application (14 and 28 years) of rice straw, compost and wheat straw on changes in soil chemical and physical properities, aspests of releasing potential nitrogen and nitrogen uptake by rice and maize from fine textured paddy soils with double cropping system in warm temperate area. The result obtained were summarized as follows : 1. The long-term application of organic matters improved plow layer and soil physical properties : bulk density and solid phase were decreased, while porosity and gaseous phase were decreased. 2. Average increment of total carbon per year was 0.0371% and 0.0407% for rice straw and compost, respectively, from 1 through 14 years ; it was 0.0007% and 0.0014% for the rice straw and compost, respectively, from 15 years through 28 years. The average increment of total notrogen per year was 0.0025% and 0.038% for the rice straw and compost, respectively, from 1 through 14 years ; 0.0014% and 0.0024% for the same treatments from 15 through 28 years. 3. $NH_4-N$ and amide-N were high in the soils with wheat straw application for 28 years ; the amino sugar-N in the soils with compost application for 28 years ; amino acid -N in the soils with rice straw application for 14 and 28 years ; and unidentified-N, in the control. 4. The released amount of available nitrogen with the submerged condition was higher at $30^{\circ}C$ than at $25^{\circ}C$ during the incubation. The amount of released available nitrogen at the field was aproximately same as that of $25^{\circ}C$ incubation. However, the released amounts from the incubation and the field were always lower than those extracted with reagents. 5. The amount of nitrogen uptake by rice and maize was highly correlated with available nitrogen extracted with phosphate buffer(pH 7.0). 6. The ratio of yield increase(milled rice) was 17, 12 and 7%, respectively, by application of rice straw, compost and wheat straw for 28 years, and 11% by application of rice straw for 14 years.
