  • The structures and gas-phase ionization energies (ΔG°) of Meldrum's acid (I) and related cyclic (II-VI) and acyclic compounds (VII-IX) are investigated theoretically at the MP2/6-31+$G^*$, B3LYP/6-31+$G^*$, B3LYP/6- 311+$G^{**}$, B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,2p) and G3(+)(MP2) levels. Conformations of three neutral cyclic series vary gradually from boat (Meldrum's acid, I), to twisted chair (II) and to chair (III) as the methylene group is substituted for the ether oxygen successively. The preferred boat form of I can be ascribed to the two strong $n_O$ → σ* c-c antiperiplanar vicinal charge transfer interactions and electrostatic attraction between negatively charged C¹ and positively charged C⁴at the opposite end of the boat. All the deprotonated anionic forms have half-chair forms due to the two strong $n_C$ → π* c=0 vicinal charge transfer interactions. The dipole-dipole interaction theory cannot account for the higher acidity of Meldrum's acid (I) than dimedone (III). The origin of the anomalously high acidity of I is the strong increase in the vicinal charge transfer ($n_C$ → π* c=0) and 1,4-attrative electrostatic interactions (C¹↔C⁴) in the ionization (I → $I^-$ + $H^+$). In the acyclic series (VII-IX) the positively charged end atom, C⁴, is absent and the attractive electrostatic stabilization (C¹↔C⁴) is missing in the anionic form so that the acidities are much less than the corresponding cyclic series.

  • As the development of the underground space becomes active, safety accidents related to the underground are frequently occurring in recent years. In this regard, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is enforcing the 『Special Act on Underground Safety Management』 (enforced on January 1, 2018, hereafter referred to as the Underground Safety Act). Among the core contents of the Underground Safety Act, underground facilities(water supply, sewage, gas, power, communication, heating) buried underground, underground structures(subway, underpass, underpass, underground parking lot, underground shopping mall, common area), ground (Drilling, wells, geology) of 15 types of underground information can be checked at a glance on a three-dimensional basis by constructing an integrated underground spatial map and using it. The purpose of this study is to develop a program that can quickly inspect the three-dimensional model after creating a three-dimensional underground structure data among the underground spatial integration maps. To this end, we first investigated and reviewed the domestic and foreign status of technology that generates and automatically inspects 3D underground structure data. A quality inspection program was developed. Through this study, it is judged that it will be meaningful as a basic research for improving the quality of underground structures on the integrated map of underground space by automating more than 98% of the 3D model inspection process, which is currently being conducted manually.

  • On an offshore plant topside, various types of offshore facilities for processing energy resources, such as oil and gas, and equipment and outfitting for connecting these facilities are installed in a limited space. An offshore plant superstructure is composed of numerous supporting rack structures and reinforcements for securing and supporting offshore installations and the related equipment. This paper describes the development of design support software to support this superstructure design efficiently. The developed design support software, which was based on AVEVA Marine's PML(Programmable Macro Language), supports the parametric method for superstructure design. A method of batch 3D modeling from 2D drawings for supporting rack structure produced in the basic and detailed design was also developed using AutoLisp. In addition, through the application example of superstructure module design, the design support software introduced in this paper can be expected to reduce the design time by more than 90% compared to the use of only basic functions of AVEVA PDMS.

  • High-resolution (Chirp and Sparker system) seismic profiles were analyzed to investigate the sedimentary sequence and distribution pattern of the late Holocene deposits in Gyunggi Bay, the Yellow Sea. The bay is located in the western part of Korea, east of the Yellow Sea. The sedimentary sequence divided into three units bounded by erosional bounding surface: (1) acoustically parallel to subparallel reflectors with cross bedding structures (Unit 1); (2) confused inner reflectors and top of unit exposed partially at the seafloor (Unit 2); and (3) approximately parallel reflections and regressive to transgressive incision-fills (Unit 3). On the basis of seafloor morphology, surface bedforms, and subbotom acoustic characters, echo types in the study area were identified following the schemes of Chough et al. (2002); (1) flat seafloor with sharp bottom echoes (echo types 1-1, 1-2 and 1-3; transgressive sediment sheets or relict sands), (2) mounded seafloor with either smooth surface or superposed bedforms (echo types 2-1 and 2-2; tidal ridges), and (3) various-scale eroded seafloor (echo types 3-1 and 3-2; channels). Suspect features of acoustic turbid zones which is related to gas charged sediment are reported.

  • Onggi, described as a 'breathing' type of pottery' has significantly influenced the traditional food culture of Korea. It is known that Onggi is an optimal type of storage for fermented foods such as soy sauce, salted seafood, and Kimchi, as air or liquid can penetrate through the body of this material. These foods gain flavor due to the breeding of aerobic bacteria at the beginning of the fermentation process. In this study, Onggi materials from five regions, Gangjin, Yeoju, Ulsan, Yesan, and Jeju, were collected and analyzed to determine their chemical and physical properties before and after sintering. The differences in the raw materials of other mining regions are examined in terms of their chemical and mineralogical compositions, specific surface area, particle size, and particle distribution. Among them, the Gangjin raw material has the greatest mean particle size of $92.29{\mu}m$, as well as the widest particle size distribution. Differences in the levels of $SiO_2$ and $Fe_2O_3$ are shown among Onggi raw materials. However, the crystalline phases formed after sintering are identical, except for the Jeju samples. At all sintering temperatures tested here, Gangjin Onggi showed the greatest porosity, leading to complete air permeation through the body within 90 minutes. These results taken together indicate that air permeation is strongly related to the pore structures in the Onggi body. This is assumed to affect the fermentation behavior.

  • The far ultraviolet (FUV) wavelength (900-1750A) range includes a wealth of important astrophysical information related to the cooling of hot gas, fluorescent emission from H2 molecules, and starlight scattered off dust particles. Among these, we would like to focus on the scattered emission of the central star by dust with the example of the FUV halo surrounding ${\alpha}$ Vir (Spica). While scattering properties of dust have been studied with the GALEX data, the improved dataset of STSAT-1 revealed many detailed structures of this interesting region. For example, the FUV continuum map obtained from the STSAT-1 observations shows enhanced emission in the southern part of the Spica halo region, where the dust level is also high. In fact, the FUV continuum intensity is seen to have a good correlation with the IRAS 100${\mu}m$ emission data. It is also seen that the scattered spectrum is softer than the original one emitted by the central star, which is attributed to the increase in the dust-scattering albedo with wavelength. We have developed a Monte Carlo code that simulates dust scattering of light including multiple encounters. The code is applied to the present Spica halo region to obtain the scattering properties such as the albedo and the phase function asymmetry factor.

  • Exhaust manifolds are the first structures to be developed by hydroforming; mass production of exhaust manifolds by this method will be possible soon. This is obviously related with tight emission regulation induced by environmental problems commonly for both domestic and worldwide and standards, thus evoking its solution for domestic automakers. Compared to conventional cast products, thin-gauge tubular hydroformed exhaust manifold have superior features; for example, in the hydroformed exhaust manifold, gas decomposition during the cold-start period of the engine is reduced by lowering the heat sink, and manufacturing process is simplified since less welding is involved. The aim of this study is to develop a hydroformed exhaust manifold; the study deals with the components, the hydroforming process, and tool design of the manifolds. The performance of the exhaust system is evaluated by performing flow analysis, heat-transfer analysis, heat-stress analysis, and fatigue analysis by using a computer.

  • The present study has quantitatively assessed the regional production, income and employment impact resulting from the construction and operation of nuclear power plant (NPP) upon the domestic local areas by applying the regional input-output analysis model to the case of Wolsong unit-l site. The conclusions regarding the most likely regional economic impacts upon the wolsong site are summarized as follows: 1. The income multipliers are calculated to be 1.563 for the construction phase and 1.500 for the operation phase. These values are relatively high compared with those of other conventional facilities. 2. The level of total employee's wage induced employment associated with the construction phase has been estimated to be 37,000 while that with the operational phase in 1990 to be 5,610. 3. With relation to the aspect of resident welfare it is found that the industrial sector associated with electricity, gas and water supply have remarkably improved with the construction of the NPP. 4. The NPP siting has induced substantial changes in interindustry (input-output) structures of the Wolsong unit-l site which is one of the rural areas where all the domestic NPPs are sited. Such changes are attributed to the industrial recomposition of the region. 5. With the application of other regional economic analysis models and the use of more sufficient regional data, other detailed studies on the economic impact analysis of domestic NPP-related facility sitings are suggested to be carried out further since the influence of NPP sitings is significant to the national economic impact as well as the regional economic impact.

  • This paper presents the development of an integrated control and safety management system for 9% nickel steel LNG storage tank. The new system added the measuring equipment of pressure, displacement and force compared to the conventional measurement and control system. The measured data has simultaneously been processed by integrating and analyzing with new control equipments and safety management systems. The integrated control and safety management system, which may increase a safety and efficiency of a super-large full containment LNG storage tank, added additional pressure gauges and new displacement/force sensors at the outer side wall and a welding zone of a stiffener and top girder of an inner tank, and the inner side wall of a corner protection tank. The displacement and force sensors may provide failure clues of 9% nickel steel structures such as an inner tank and a corner protection, and a LNG leakage from the inner tank. The conventional leak sensor may not provide proper information on 9% nickel steel tank fracture even though LNG is leaked until the leak detector, which is placed at the insulation area between an inner tank and a corner protection tank, sends a warning signal. Thus, the new integrated control and safety management system is to collect and analyze the temperature, pressure, displacement, force, and LNG density, which are related to the tank system safety and leakage control from the inner tank. The digital data are also measured from control systems such as displacement and force of 9% nickel steel tank safety, LNG level and density, cool-down process, leakage, and pressure controls.

  • The fusion of nano technology and information technology is essential to sustain the present growth rate and to induce new industry in this ever-growing information age. Considering Korean industry whose competitiveness lies heavily on information related technologies, this field will be inevitable for future. Nano materials can be described as novel materials whose size of elemental structure has been engineered at the nanometer scale. Materials in the nanometer size range exhibit fundamentally new behavior, as their size falls below the critical length scale associated with any given property. " Bottom-up' techniques involve manipulating individual atoms and molecules. Bottom-up process usually implies controlled or directed self assembly of atoms and molecules into nano structures. It resembles more closely the processes of biology and chemistry, where atoms and molecules come together to create structures such as crystals or living cells. Nano scale sensors are included in the electronics area since the diverse sensing mechanisms are often housed on a semiconductor substrate and usually give rise to an electronic signal. The application of nano technology to the chemical sensors should allow improvements in functionality such as gas sensing. In this presentation, we will discuss about the nano scale information materials and devices fabricated by using the organic/inorganic nano templates.
