This paper was to investigate the preparation of polysulfone(PS), polyethersulfone(PES) and polyphenylsulfone(PPS) membrane. The thermal property of PPS was higher than that of others. From the result of SEM, the concentration of polymer was found to have a significant effect on the structure of membrane, and the structure of membrane made of PES is found to have regular micell form of asymmetry. Permeability and selectivity for oxygen and nitrogen gas in the air were analyzed by GC. Permeabilities of the membrane made of PES for oxygen and nitrogen in air, 1.5 and $0.7(x10^9[cm^3(STP)cm/cm^2seccmHg]) $, respectively was higher than that of others. and Selectivity of the membrane made of PPS for oxygen to nitrogen gas in air was 2.9.
Hydrogen gas has attracted considerable attention as a promising candidate for future energy resources because of its eco-friendly characteristics; however, its highly combustible characteristics should be thoroughly examined to preclude potential disasters. In this regard, a highly sensitive method for the selective detection of H2 is extremely important. To achieve excellent H2 selectivity, the utilization of a metal-organic framework (MOF) membrane can physically screen interfering gas molecules by restricting the size of kinetic diameters that can penetrate its nanopores. This paper summarizes the various endeavors of researchers to utilize the MOF molecular sieving layer for the development of highly selective H2 sensors. Further, the review affords useful insights into the development of highly reliable H2 sensors.
The power to gas (P2G) is one of the energy storage technologies that can increase the storage period and storage capacity compared to the existing battery type. One of P2G technologies produces hydrogen by decomposing water from renewable energy (electricity) and the other produces $CH_4$ by reacting hydrogen with $CO_2$. The objective of this study is the reaction of $CO_2$ methanation which synthesized methane by reacting carbon dioxide and hydrogen. The effect of $CO_2$ conversion and $CH_4$ selectivity on reaction temperature, pressure, and methane contents over 40% Ni catalyst was mainly investigated throughout this study. As a result, the activity of this catalyst appeared to be the highest in $CH_4$ yield at around $400^{\circ}C$ and the selectivity of $CH_4$ increased with increasing reaction pressure. The methane content was not significantly influenced below 3% of all componets. As the space velocity increases from 10,000 to 30,000/hr, the $CO_2$ conversion rate tends to decrease.
In this study, we propose an array-type gas sensor with high selectivity and response using multiple oxide semiconductors. The sensor array was composed of SnO2 and In2O3, and the detection characteristics were improved by using Pt, Au, and Pd catalysts. All samples were deposited directly on the Pt interdigitated electrode (IDE) through the e-beam evaporator glancing angle deposition (GAD) method. They grew in the form of well-aligned nanorods at off-axis angles. The prepared SnO2 and In2O3 nanorod samples were exposed to CH3COCH3, C7H8, and NO2 gases in a 300℃ dry condition. Au-decorated SnO2, Au-decorated In2O3, and Pd-decorated In2O3 exhibited high selectivity for CH3COCH3, C7H8, and NO2, respectively. They demonstrated a high detection limit of the sub ppb level computationally. In addition, measurements from each sensor were executed in the 40% relative humidity condition. Although there was a slight reduction in detection response, high selectivity and distinguishable detection characteristics were confirmed.
Natural gas combustion characteristics of mass produced oxygen carrier particles were investigated in a batch type bubbling fluidized bed reactor. Five particles, NiO/bentonite, OCN601-650, OCN702-1100, OCN703-950, OCN703-1100 were used as oxygen carrier particles. Natural gas and air were used as reactants for reduction and oxidation, respectively. During reduction reaction, high fuel conversion and high $CO_2$ selectivity were achieved for most of oxygen carriers. During oxidation, NO emission was very low. These results indicate that inherent $CO_2$ separation and low NOx combustion are feasible for the natural gas fueled chemical-looping combustion system. Among the five oxygen carriers, OCN703-1100 particle was selected as the best candidate for demonstration of long-term operation in large-scale chemical-looping combustor from the viewpoints of fuel conversion, $CO_2$ selectivity, $CH_4$ concentration, and CO concentration.
The highest etch rate of Pt film was obtained at 10% $Cl_2$/90% Ar gas mixing ratio in our previous investigation. However, the problems such as the etch residues(fence) remained on the pattern sidewall, low selectivity to oxide as mask and low etch slope were presented. In this paper, the etching by additive $O_2$ gas to 10% $Cl_2$/90% Ar gas base was examined. As a result, the fence-free pattern and higher etch slope as about 60$^{\circ}$was observed and the selectivity to oxide increased to 2.4 without decreasing of the etch rate $1500{\AA}$/min. XPS surface analysis proved that a only little $O_2$ gas removes the Pt-CI compounds as residues on the etched surface.
Pure and V-doped NiO porous structures were prepared by the evaporation-induced surfactant assembly and subsequent pyrolysis of assembled structures, and their gas sensing characteristics were investigated. Pure NiO porous structures showed negligible gas responses (S=$R_g/R_a$, $R_g$: sensor resistance in analytic gas; $R_a$: sensor resistance in air) to 5 ppm trimethylamine (S=1.17) as well as other interfering gases such as ethanol, p-xylene, toluene, benzene and formaldehyde (S=1.02-1.13). In contrast, the V-doped NiO porous structures exhibited a high response and selectivity to 5 ppm trimethylamine (S=14.5) with low cross-responses to other interfering gases (S=4.0-8.7) at $350^{\circ}C$. The high gas response of V-doped NiO porous structures to trimethylamine was explained by electronic sensitization, that is, the increase in the chemoresistive variation due to the decrease in the hole concentration. The enhanced selectivity to trimethylamine was discussed in relation to the interaction between basic trimethylamine gas and acidic V catalysts.
Polymeric membranes have been widely used to separate gas mixtures, such as $O_2/N_2,\;CO_2/CH_4,\;CO_2/N_2$, and olefin/paraffin. The permeation selectivity is the ratio between composition ratio at the permeate side and composition ratio at the feed side. In addition, the permeation selectivity is a product of solubility selectivity and diffusivity selectivity. We present a novel idea and describe its experimental result, which was achieved by preparing polymer gel films that included a room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) in a polymer matrix. It is known that $CO_2$ can dissolve easily in imidazolium-based RTILs. We prepared polymer-ionic liquid gel films using an ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([emim] acetate, C-tri) and a host polymer, poly (vinyl acetate) (PVAc, Aldrich).
In this study, we prepared non-porous plasma membrane for having high permeability and selectivity and this membrane was deposited on the $Al_{2}O_{3}$ membrane by using $CHF_{3}$ & $SiH_{4}$ monomer. Also, we investigated for the permeation characteristics of the plasma polymer membrane by Ar plasma treatment. When the position of substrate was near cathode, the selectivity was increased with Ar plasma treatment time and rf-power. The pore size of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ membrane had an effect on the permeability and the position of substrate affected selectivity.
