In this paper, various operating parameters of stream reforming process from methane in preconverter for MCFC is studied by numerical method. Commercial code is used to simulated the porous catalyst with user subroutine to model three dominant chemical reactions which are Stream Reforming(SR), Water-Gas Shift(WGS), and Direct Stram Reforming(DSR). The hydrogen production is tested with different wall temperature, Gas Hourly Space Velocity(GHSV), and different reactor shapes.

The ignition phenomena of a solid fuel plate of polymethyl-methacrylate(PMMA), which is vertically positioned and exposed to a thermal radiation source, is numerically studied here. A two-dimensional transient model includes such various aspects as thermal decomposition of PMMA, gas phase radiation absorption, gas phase chemical reaction and air entrainment by natural convection. Whereas the previous studies considers the problem approximately in a one-dimensional form by neglecting the natural convection, the present model takes account of the two-dimensional effect of radiation and air entrainment. The inert heating of the solid fuel is also taken into consideration. Radiative heat transfer is incorporated by th Discrete Ordinates Method(DOM) with the absorption coefficient evaluated using gas species concentration. The thermal history of the solid fuel plate shows a good agreement compared with experimental results. Despite of induced natural convective flow that induces heat loss from the fuel surface, the locally absorbed radiant energy, which is converted to the internal energy, is found to play an important role in the onset of gas phase ignition. The ignition is considered to occur when the rate of variation of gas phase reaction rate reaches its maximum value. Once the ignition takes place, the flame propagates downward.

A numerical study was carried out to analyze the effect of flow distribution of stirred part and plug flow part on combustion efficiency at the coal gasification process in an entrained bed coal reactor. The model of computation was based on gas phase eulerian balance equations of mass and momentum. The solid phase was described by lagrangian equations of motion. The $k-{\varepsilon}$ model was used to calculate the turbulence flow and eddy dissipation model was used to describe the gas phase reaction rate. The radiation was solved using a Monte-Carlo method. One-step parallel two reaction model was employed for the devolatilization process of a high volatile bituminous Kideco coal. The computations agreed well with the experiments, but the flame front was closer to the burner than the measured one. The flow distribution of a stirred part and a plug flow part in a reactor was a function of the magnitude of recirculation zone resulted from the swirl. The combustion efficiency was enhanced with decreasing stirred part and the maximum value was found around S=1.2, having the minimum stirred part. The combustion efficiency resulted from not only the flow distribution but also the particle residence time through the hot reaction zone of the stirred part, in particular for the weak swirl without IRZ(internal recirculation zone) and the long lifted flame.
Char gasification is affected by operating conditions such as reaction temperature, reactants gas partial pressure, total system pressure and particle size in addition to chemical composition and physical structure of char. The aim of the present work was to characterize the effect of coal particle size on $CO_{2}$ gasification of chars prepared from two different types of bituminous coals at different reaction temperatures(1,000-$1,400{^{\circ}C}$). Lab scale experiments were carried out at atmospheric pressure in a fixed reactor where heat was supplied into a sample of char particles. When a flow of $CO_{2}$(40 vol%) was delivered into the reactor, the char reacted with $CO_{2}$ and was transformed into CO. Carbon conversion of the char was measured using a real time gas analyzer having NDIR CO/$CO_{2}$ sensor. The results showed that the gasification reactivity increased as the particle size decreased for a given temperature. The sensitivity of the reactivity to particle size became higher as the temperature increases. The size effects became remarkably prominent at higher temperatures and became a little prominent for lower reactivity coal. The particle size and coal type also affected reaction models. The shrinking core model described better for lower reactivity coal, whereas the volume reaction model described better for higher reactivity coal.

A thermochemical equilibrium model was constructed for predicting composition of synthesis gas in biomass gasification. The model included estimation of equilibrium constants using Gibbs free energy. After constructing the model, the results were compared with the experimental values and predictions from a previous model. Gas compositions were reasonably well agreed with them and showed effects of operational and fuel condition. When the reaction temperature increased, the lower heating values decreased due to the decrease in CH4 concentrations. The methane concentrations were lower than those observed in experimental results. The model was used to predict the gas composition and heating values for the cases of mixed fuel of charcoal and un-dry woodchips. Although downdraft gasifiers require fuels less than 15% of moisture contents, the model results indicated that the mixed fuel with charcoal and woodchips which had over 25% of moisture contents could be used in the downdraft gasifiers. It might be explained by increase in energy density resulting from mixing charcoal. The results imply that the efforts and costs for drying biomass fuels could be reduced by mixing charcoal or fuels with higher calorific values.

Dimethyl ether (DME) is a new clean fuel as an environmentally-benign energy resource. DME can be manufactured from various energy sources including natural gas, coal, biomass and spent plastic. In addition to its environmentally friendly properties, DME has similar characteristics to those of LPG. Therefore, it is considered as an excellent substitute fuel for LPG, fuel cells, power plant, and especially diesel and is expected to be the alternative fuel by 2010. The experimental study of the direct synthesis of DME was investigated under various conditions over a temperature range of $220{\sim}280^{\circ}C$, syngas ratio 1.2~3.0. All experiments were carried out with a hybrid catalyst, composed of a methanol synthesis catalyst ($Cu/ZnO/Al_2O_3$) and a dehydration catalyst (${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$). The observed reaction rate follows qualitatively a Langmiur-Hinshellwood model as the reaction mechanism. Such a mechanism is considered with three reactions; methanol synthesis, methanol dehydration and water gas shift reaction. From a surface reaction with dissociative adsorption of hydrogen, methanol, and water, individual reaction rate was determined.
This paper focuses on a systematic configuration of steam reforming fuel processor, particularly designed for small and medium sized hydrogen production application. In a typical integration of the fuel processor, there exist significant temperature gradients over the entire system which has negative effect on both catalyst life-time and system performance. Also, the volumetric inefficiency should be avoided to obtain the possible compactness for the commercial purpose. In the present work, the computational analysis will be performed to gain the fundamental insight on the transport phenomena and chemical reactions in the reformer consisting of preheating, steam reforming (SR), and water gas shift (WGS) reaction beds in the flow direction. Also, the fuel processing system includes a top-fired burner providing necessary thermal energy for endothermic catalytic reactor. A fully two-dimensional numerical modeling for a integrated fuel processing system is introduced for in-depth analysis of the heat and mass transport phenomena based on surface kinetics and catalytic process. In the model, water gas shift reaction and decomposition reaction were assumed to be at equilibrium. A kinetic model was developed and then computational results were compared with the experimental data available in the literature. Finally, the case study was done by considering the key parameters, i.e. steam to carbon (S/C) ratio and temperature. The computer-aided models developed in this study can be greatly utilized for the design of advanced fast-paced compact fuel processors research.

Reaction characteristics and kinetics of a oxygen carrier (OCN717-R1SU) for chemical looping combustion (CLC) have been investigated using TGA by changing gas concentration (10-30 vol.% $CH_4$) and reaction temperature ($825-900^{\circ}C$). Reaction rate of OCN717-R1SU increased as temperature increased and it was found that reaction is delayed at the initial reaction regime. Johnson-Mehl-Avrami (JMA) model was adopted to explain the reaction phenomenon. The activation energy (E) determined by JMA model in reduction reaction of OCN717-R1SU is $151.7{\pm}2.03kJ/mol$ and pre-exponential factor and JMA exponent were also obtained. The parameters calculated in this study will be applied in design of the reactor and operation conditions for CLC process.
Air-assisted atomizer flames are investigated numerically to study spray structures in nonburning and burning conditions based on experimental data. A PDA is used to measure droplet size, velocity, and number density for both nonburning and burning spray. Computations utilize time-averaged gas-phase equations and $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model for simplicity. The major features of the liquid-phase model are that a SSF approach is used to represent the effect of gas-phase turbulence on droplet trajectories and vaporization, an infinite-diffusion model is employed to represent the transient liquid-phase process. Computation and experiment results show that the droplet acceleration and evaporation proceed quickly in near the atomizer, characterizing high number densities and a strong convective effect. The primary combustion zone, however, is dorminated by the gas phase reaction and exhibits a sheath combustion.
A numerical model has been proposed for a diffusion flame reactor to manufacture ultrafine $TiO_2$ powders. The model equations such as mass balance equation, the 0th, 1st, and 2nd moment equations of aerosols were considered. The phenomena such as $TiCl_4$ reaction rate, $TiO_2$ nucleation rate and the coagulation of $TiO_2$ powders were included in the aerosol dynamic equation. It is found that the $TiO_2$ particle concentration becomes higher, as the inlet $TiCl_4$ concentration and the total gas flow rate increase, and also as the flame temperature decreases. The $TiO_2$ particle size increases, as the flame temperature and the inlet $TiCl_4$ concentration increase and the total gas flow rate decreases.
