  • Traditional folk houses in Yongdong, Gangwon province play important roles in figuring out natural, human, and social value in the past time including housing life. However, according to the introduction of electric or plumbing equipment in housing life styles, many conventional architectures have been changed by installations of new electric or plumbing equipment, convenience facilities, and etc. Therefore, this study aims to make basic data to prepare for standardized installations of the electric or plumbing equipment, and convenience facilities by surveying of the present installation status, such as electric lights, outlets, switches, wiring, pipe laying, or monitoring devices for crime, disaster prevention facilities, and home appliances etc. Additionally, this paper is related to the meaning and usage, which are connected with the electric or plumbing equipment installations of the traditional folk houses to be prepare for the proper solutions between preservations of the original form and convenient lives for residents.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the best-fit nonlinear height-DBH growth models for Larix kaempferi in Gangwon and North Gyeongsang province in South Korea. Exponential, Modified Logistic, Chapman-Richards, and Weibull function were used for estimating height-DBH models. To evaluate the selected models, $R^2$, RMSE, MD, MAD, and residual plots were performed in each model. Also, the coefficients and patterns in models of the previous studies were compared with those in this study. The result showed that Weibull equation was found to be the best-fit model with $R^2$=0.9837, RMSE=2.6133, MD=0.0089, and MAD=2.0896. All model parameters in our study had similar values to those in the previous models except for asymptotic parameter a. Our research result showed that Gangwon and North Gyeongsang province were superior to other provinces with regard to height growth for Larix kaempferi.

  • This study is to analyze the relationship between rainfall and water level using the measured data. During the rainfall event from September 9 to September 12, 2010, the rainfall and water level data were measured from automatic weather systems and automatic water level measurement systems which have been installed throughout Gangwon province. The result showed that the relationship between rainfall and peak flow change was different by basin and tributary. It is expected that this study will help to build a plan for preventing disasters and rainfall-runoff models for the river basins in Gangwon province.

  • This study made a nationwide metropolitan region map on the basis of disaster vulnerability and administrative boundary, and based on it, it divided small-sized regions and constructed disaster history of each region. For the disaster vulnerability, the study wrote slope, aspect, curvature, wetness index, and drainage density, compared and analyzed regions with disaster and geomorphic elements to distinct the factor with high correlations, and based on it, it divided small-sized regions for forecasting and warning system of middle regions(Gangwon province, Chungchung province, and Jeolla province). Through the method, Gangwon region were divided into 4 small-sized regions, Chungchung into 5 small-sized regions, and Jeolla into 6 small-sized regions.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the spatial distribution and characteristics of villages before modern public works in the Demilitarized Zone(DMZ) by using Geographical Information System(GIS). There were total 427 villages within the DMZ according to a survey. By the administrative region, whereas there were 183 villages in Gangwon Province which had a share of 43% of the total, there were 244 villages in Gyeonggi Province which had that of 57%. Subsequently, Gyeonggi Province had a higher share than Gangwon Province, even though its area was smaller than Gangwon Province's one. In terms of the pattern of villages, there was a pattern of the dispersed settlement focused upon the area of the Taebaek mountains. In addition, there were a pattern of the dike settlement by a traffic route and river as well as that of agglomerated settlement in other area. There was a pattern of compact settlement in a plain. This research can be contributed (1) to be used a basic information in order to solve a conflict between development and conservation which may occur in the future, and (2) to be applied to develop contents for the DMZ's competitiveness.

  • This study was conducted to investigate distribution of selenium in Gangwon highland Province and to confirm the effect of sodium selenate added nutrient solution on the selenium content of some western vegetables; beet, broccoli, cabbage lettuce, celery, and parsley. The contents of selenium were distributed from 0.024 to $0.038\;mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ in soil of Gangwon highland province. As the selenium content in soil increased, the selenium content in broccoli was increased in highland of Gangwon province. The selenium content of broccoli showed $10.5{\sim}17.9\;mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}DW$ 1311owe4 by celery ($6.02\;mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}DW$). Beet, cabbage lettuce, and parsley contained just about $1\;mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}DW$ in highland of Gangwon province. Some western vegetables grown by fertigation supplied $2\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ sodium selenate were shown better growth and higher selenium content than those of $0\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ sodium selenate supplied treatment(control). The selenium contents of western vegetables supplied $2\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ sodium selenate in fertigation culture for 60 days were $76.2\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ in broccoli, $69.1\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ in parsley, $63.2\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ in celery, $54.2\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ in beet, $8.3\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ in cabbage lettuce. Those selenium content of broccoli, celery, and parsley treated $2\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ sodium selenate were followed the order 4.2 times, 10.5 times and 62.5 times higher in compared to control.

  • In recent years in Korea, Typhoon Rusa (2002), Typhoon Maemi (2003), and the localized extreme rainfall followed by Typhoon Ewiniar in 2006 devastated residential areas, roads, and agricultural lands in Gangwon province where 90% of the area is in mountainous regions. Most of the economic losses and casualties were concentrated in the area near the mountain valleys and creeks due to the floods and debris flows. In this study, DATABASE, which includes a total 180 debris flow events in the Gangwon area, was created by collecting the hazard records and field investigations of existing debris flow sites. Analysis results showed that the most of the debris flows in Gangwon province initiated from the small slope failure with relatively steep slope of $18.1^{\circ}$. And they flowed short distances about 420 m in gentle slope with the average angle of $18.1^{\circ}$. In addition, rainfall condition was important for the triggering of debris flow not only at the day of debris flow but also extended period of rainfall before debris flow.

  • This paper is the results of analysis for the causes and characteristics of landslide according to heavy rain occurred in west area of Gangwon province which is affected by typhoon such as Ewiniar and Bilis in 2006. West side of Gangwon province is topographically weak for the landslide and debris flow since it is covered by soil of weathered rock such as Gneiss and Granite. From the results of analysis for the rainfall characteristics, it was found that landslide occurrence is closely related to the accumulated rainfall amount less than 3 days. Furthermore, it was found that regional difference of occurrence frequency is effected by 1-hour maximum rainfall intensity. From the results of analysis for the landslide data of 860 locations occurred in west side, it was shown that failure mode was changed from transition slide to liquidity slide. Occurrence frequency was high at the slope angle of $20{\sim}30^{\circ}$ slope length of 11~20, and slope width of 6~10. Landslide of west side is the typical landslide of Gneiss and Granite and the type of small scale which has narrow slope width.
