Objectives: In an effort to examine the distribution of THMs (Trihalomethane) generated from chlorine disinfection by the drinking water treatment plants located on the east coast region of Gangwon-do, this study surveyed the distribution and concentrations of each component of THMs twice per month for 5 years from 2008 to 2012. Fluctuation pattern in the seasonal generation amount was identified. In addition, the correlation between the concentration of organic substances in water and THMs was assessed, along with stability of purified water quality supplied by the water treatment plants on the east coast by analyzing the composition ratio of each component that constitutes THMs and the detection frequency. Method: The research was done on purified water supplied by 29 water treatment plants in 7 cities and counties (Goseong-gun, Sokcho-si, Yangyang-gun, Gangneung-si, Donghae-si, Samcheok-si, Taebaek-si) located in Gangwon-do on the east coast. Water samples were collected twice a month from 2008 to 2012 and were investigate for chloroform, bromodichloromethane (BDCM), dibromochloromethane (DBCM), and bromoform, based on analysis through Purge-Trap (Tekmar 3000) devices using FID-attached GC (HP 6890, Hewlett Packard). Result: THMs concentration detected at Gangneung-si was 0.0086mg/L, Goseong-gun 0.0019mg/L, Donghae-si 0.0099 mg/L, Samcheok-si 0.0016 mg/L, Sokcho-si 0.0057 mg/L, Yangyang-gun 0.0027 mg/L and Taebaek-si 0.0038 mg/L. As the THMs composition rate, chloroform constitutes 51.4% followed bybromodichloromethane 22.3%, bromoform 15.2% and dibromochloromethane 11.1% respectively. Conclusion: Throughout the entire THMs survey areas and period, the maximum concentration was 0.072mg/L, which did not exceed the water quality standards (0.1 mg/L), and the overall average concentration was very low at 0.0044 mg/L.
The east coast area of Gangwon province in Korea is famous for natural beauty, many perfect sights and various kinds of tourist attractions. Especially beaches are one of the most attractive and clean tourist attractions in Gangwon province, when compared to the west and south coast of Korea, the natural environment is more prominent. But there are many problems concering the east coast beaches of Gangwon province, such as environmental disruption, collecting fees for offering services, crowdedness, lack of main convenient facilities, decrease of consumption, unseasonably cool temperatures etc. This study examined several problems as to the beach management of Gangwon province that has been suggested over several years. Finally, the author suggested several improvements to solve the problems as mentioned above.

In this study, we investigated the relationship between catches of yellowtail and water temperature at the set net fisheries of Gyeongsangbuk-do (Gyeongbuk) and Gangwon-do (Gangwon) off the east coast of Korea from May-November, 1980-2010. We also analyzed the water temperature and fluctuation of catches during the northward moving period (May-August) and southward moving period (September-November) using NOAA satellite images. Although the total catches fluctuated year by year, catches increased during the southward moving period when the water alongside the coast warmed. Yellowtail catches during the southward period in fall were higher than those during the northward period in spring or summer. The catch when the water temperature decreased was larger in Gyeongbuk than in Gangwon for all periods However, the catch when the water temperature increased was much larger in Gangwon than in Gyeongbuk. This indicates that high summer temperatures (> $25^{\circ}C$) affected the coast of Gangwon, with high water temperature ($20^{\circ}C$) maintained in the region during fall. Therefore, the increased catch in Gangwon was due to longer yellowtail presence caused by increased water temperature.

The distribution and composition of marine floating debris were recorded from a training ship 'Kyeongyang' of Gangwon Provincial University at May 19-29, 2004 and Aug.24-31, 2004. The sampled area is the middle part of East Sea of Korea(the coast of Gangwondo and region of Ulleung island and Tokdo), divided into 27 unit segments on survey areas. Debris fabrication materials were categorized with 6 items using the following; styrofoam, paper & cardboard, net & rope, vinyl & plastic, floating metal & glass, man-made or natural wood. From the investigation on May,2004, total numbers of marine floating debris in the middle part of the East Sea of Korea was 996 individuals. The No. 1 and No. 2 unit segment located at south-west region of Ulleung Island showed higher density than others. The styrofoam and vinyl & plastic accounted for 72.8% of all debris fabrication materials. From the investigation on August, 2004, total numbers of marine floating debris in the coast of the Gangwondo of Korea was 2,473 individuals. The No. 13 and No. 14 unit segment located at the vicinity of Samcheok showed higher density than others. The styrofoam and vinyl & plastic amounted to 76.1%. In the coast of the Gangwondo, the vinyl & plastic showed the highest density of 6 items were 41.3% and 68.0% on May and August, respectively. The total numbers of marine floating debris on May and August were 3,399 individuals. Vinyl & plastic accounted for 59.4%(2,019 ind.) among all debris, next styrofoam 15.8%(537 ind.) and wood 11.2%(379 ind.).
The purpose of this paper is to estimate the economic value of beaches which are the major part of the East Sea Coast. ITCM (Individual Travel Cost Method) is applied to estimate the economic value of its beaches using Poisson, negative binomial, truncated Poisson and truncated negative binomial models. The consumer surplus during length of stay per capita is 214,088 won in beaches overall on the East Sea Coast, 206,398 won in Gangwon-do beaches and 271,171 won in Gyeongbuk/Ulsan beaches. Annual total economic value of its beaches considering the number of visitors at beaches is 6,269 billion won (3,970 billion won in Kangwondo beaches, 2,299 billion won in Kyungbuk/Ulsan beaches).
This study analyzed characteristics and tendencies of seasonal change on shoreline and beach with 8 beaches at East Sea coast by topographical survey for 2 years from March 2012 to February 2013. The shorelines of East Sea coast appeared that amount of seasonal change was bigger than amount of annual change. The seasonal change tendencies between Gangwon-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do coast areas existed some regional differences. To synthesize seasonal changes on 8 beaches of East Sea coast, shoreline advance and beach deposit showed clearly in summer and shoreline retreat and beach erosion showed clearly in autumn. This result is different from tendencies of seasonal change in many mid-latitude coast areas of the world, but generally corresponds with reference studies in west coast and east coast. The major factor of beach erosion showing mostly in summer is storm wave caused by typhoon. The beach erosion by storm wave also occurred in late winter. And it assumes that the beach deposit showing mostly in autumn is result of equilibrium processes of coast area against strong erosion in summer.

Giant pacific octopus, Enteroctopus dofleini, is a large mollusk distributed in the East Sea of Korea. In this study, the catch status of giant pacific octopus by drift line fishery and the effect of sea temperature on fishing ground were investigated in Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, which is the central coast of the East Sea. The average catch of giant pacific octopus in Gangwon-do was 1,570 tons over the past ten years, and it accounted for 21% in 2008 and 44% in 2021 compared to the total catch in the East Sea during the same period. Such data indicates that the catch in Gangwon-do has recently increased. In this study area, giant pacific octopus weighing 1.1-5.0 kg dominated accounting for 56% of the total individuals, and followed by those weighing 1 kg or less. However, the ratio of catch of giant pacific octopus over 5.1 kg tended to increase in 2021, which is thought to be related to the sea temperature that affected the fishing ground. The main depth of fishing ground was from 21 m to 50 m in this area and fishing grounds were widely distributed throughout the season except summer. Fishing ground was formed with the conditions of bottom sea temperature under 10℃ and was diminished by moving of giant pacific octopus to deeper depth with conditions of bottom sea temperature over 18℃.
The biogeography and diversity patterns of the marine bivalve molluscan fauna of the East Sea coast of South Korea are analyzed. The total species richness of the continental Korean bivalve fauna, excluding insular regions (Dok-do and Ullung-do), is 304, and from north to south the species richness of bivalves increases showing a clear gradient: Gangwon, 143 species ${\rightarrow}$ Gyeongbuk, 131 ${\rightarrow}$ Gyeongnam, 183. A zonal-geographical analysis of the entire fauna shows that the great majority are warm-water mollusks, constituting 77% (subtropical, 37%, tropical-subtropical, 30%, subtropical-boreal, 10%), The number of boreal (low-boreal, widely distributed boreal and circumboreal) species is lower, 19%, whereas boreal-arctic mollusks have only 4%. This demonstrates that the bivalve molluscan fauna of the eastern coast of Korea is subtropical, and has more affinities to the fauna of the East China Sea than to the northern East Sea. Separate analysis by provinces shows the increasing role of warm-water mollusks from north to south. While tropical-subtropical and subtropical species constitute 47% (68 species) in Gangwon, their dominance increases to 71% (93 species) in Gyeongbuk, and to 80% (148 species) in Gyeongnam. The Gyeongnam bivalve fauna is the most diverse in species composition and has the largest number of "endemics" (species known only from this province), 46%. The Gangwon fauna also contains many "endemics", up to 40%, while Gyeongbuk is an intermediate zone with low "endemicity", only at one-fifth of the regional fauna, and has the most species in common among the three provinces.
