  • Gallium Nitride (GaN) powders were synthesized by calcining a gallium(III) sulfate salt in flowing ammonia in the temperature range 500-1100$^{\circ}C$. The process of conversion of the salt to GaN was monitored by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The salt decomposed to ${\gamma}$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ and then converted to GaN without ${\gamma}$-${\beta}$Ga$_2$O$_3$ phase transition. Variations in XRD patterns and weight loss of samples with temperature indicate that the conversion of ${\gamma}$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ to GaN does not proceed through Ga$_2$O but stepwise via amorphous gallium oxynitride (GaO$\_$x/N$\_$y/) as intermediates. Room-temperature photoluminescence spectra of GaN powders obtained showed the emission peak at 363 nm and no yellow band.

  • Phononic crystals are composite materials consisting of a periodic arrangement of scattering inclusions in a host material. One of the most important properties of phononic crystals is the existence of band gaps, i.e., ranges of frequencies at which acoustic waves cannot propagate through the structure. The present study aims to investigate theoretically and experimentally the acoustic band structures in two-dimensional (2D) phononic crystals consisting of periodic square arrays of stainless steel solid cylinders with a diameter of 1 mm and a lattice constant of 1.5 mm in water. The theoretical dispersion relation that depicts the relationship between the frequency and the wave vector was calculated along the ${\Gamma}X$ direction of the first Brillouin zone using the finite element method to predict the band structures in the 2D phononic crystals. The transmission and the reflection coefficients were measured in the 2D phononic crystals with 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 layers of stainless steel cylinders stacked in the perpendicular direction to propagation at normal incidence. The theoretical dispersion relation exhibited five band gaps at frequencies below 2 MHz, the first gap appearing around a frequency of 0.5 MHz. The location and the width of the band gaps experimentally observed in the transmission and the reflection coefficients appeared to coincide well with those determined from the theoretical dispersion relation.

  • Rutile type of $TiO_{2}$ single crystal was grown by floating zone method in order to obtain the highly transparent and contamination-free single crystal. The linear refractive index of perpendicular and parallel to c-axis was measured as a function o f wavelength from 500 to 1000nm. The optical energy band gap was estimated as 2.99 eV from the absorption spectrum. The theoretical $\chi^{(3)}$} value of $TiO_{2}$ was discussed in comparison with that of $SiO_{2}$ quartz single crystal on the basis of semiempirical model. On the other hand, the second-hyperpolarizability, ${\gamma}({Ti}^{4+})$ was calculated in order to describe the effect of $Ti_{4}$ ion on the third order nonlinear optical properties.

  • The effects of an antipsychotic, chlorpromazine, on the electroencephalogram (EEG) were observed while rats were awake but immobile. The time course and the dose-dependency of the EEG changes were examined. The method of the power spectrum analysis was used to examine the EEG changes by the drug. The bands were divided into delta $(1{\sim}3.5\;Hz),$ theta $(3.5{\sim}8\;Hz),$ alpha $(8{\sim}13\;Hz),$ beta1 $(13{\sim}21\;Hz),$ beta2 $(21{\sim}30\;Hz)$ and gamma $(30{\sim}50\;Hz).$ In rats, the low dose of chlropromazine (1 mg/kg, i.p.) produced a significant increase in the power of the beta1 band. The higher doses (5, 10 mg/kg, i.p.) produced a significant increase in the power of the delta, theta, alpha and beta1 bands, and the decrease in the power of the gamma band. The powers of the bands changed dose-dependently. Then, the authors discussed whether the EEG effects produced by a drug are associated with the accompanying behavioral changes specifically.

  • Diazepam, a benzodiazepine (BDZ) agonist, produces sedation and flumazenil, a BDZ antagonist, blocks these actions. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of BDZs on cortical electroencephalogram (EEG) in rats. The recording electrodes were implanted over the frontal and parietal cortices bilaterally, and the reference and ground electrodes over cerebellum under ketamine anesthesia. To assess the effects of diazepam and flumazenil, rats were injected with diazepam (1 mgHg, i.p.) and/or flumazenil ( 1 mg/kg, i.p.), and the EEG was recorded before and after drugs. Normal awake had theta peak in the spectrum and low amplitude waves, while normal sleep showed large amplitude of slow waves. The powers of delta, theta and alpha bands were increased during sleep compared with during awake. Diazepam reduced the mobility of the rat and induced sleep with intermittent fast spindles and large amplitude of slow activity, and it produced broad peak over betaL band and increased the power of gamma band, which were different from EEG patterns in normal sleep. Saline injection awakened rats and abolished fast spindles for a short period about 2-5 min from EEG pattern during diazepam-induced sleep. Flumazenil blocked both diazepam-induced sleep and decreased the slow activities of delta, theta, alpha and betaL, but not of gamma activity for about 10 min or more. This study may indicate that decrease in power of betaL and betaH bands can be used as the measure of central action of benzodiazepines, and that the EEG parameters of benzodiazepines have to be measured without control over the behavioral state by experimenter.

  • Single crystals of sodium thiosulfate $(Na_2S_2O_3) have been grown from the saturated solution by the evaporation method at the optimum condition. Radiation damages in the crystal by ${\gamma}$-irradiation of $20{\times}10^6$ Rontgen have given rise to paramagnetic centers. The anisotropic spectra of each paramagnetic species have been obtained with the X-band EPR spectrometer at room temperature. When an isotropic D.P.P.H. at g value of 2.0036 is based on. ESR Spectra of the single crystal are recorded for each rotation about the perpendicular a, b and c axis with intervals of $10^{\circ}$ from $0^{\circ}$to $180^{\circ}$ in order to find out the properties of the crystal for anglar variation of the anisotropic peaks. The g values are calculated from the line position between the anisotropic peaks and the isotropic peaks of D.P.P.H. and then principal g values and their direction cosines of the species is obtained by the diagonalization of 9 matrix elements of the corresponding g values. From the analysis of the characteristic principal g values and direction cosines for ${\gamma}$-irradiated $Na_2S_2O_3$ crystal, anisotropic peaks corresponding to $SO_2^+, SO_2^- $are identified and the existences of unidentified and unstable paramagnetic defects are verified.

  • The goal of this research was to better understand the mechanism of environmental control of PEPC expression from Hydrilla verticillata grown under $CO_2$ stress. When PEPC concentration was plotted against $CO_2$ compensation point (${\Gamma}$), a linear increase in PEPC concentration was seen with a decrease in $CO_2$ compensation point. ${\Gamma}$ was measured on each day of the time course induction. Hydrilla plants exhibited an initially large decrease in ${\Gamma}$ between day 0 and day 1; thereafter, the ${\Gamma}$ declined in a fairly linear trend for the remaining 5 day time course. PEPC activity varied greatly over the time course. PEPC activity increased daily from day 0 through day 5 of the time course. Activity of PEPC increased almost 4-fold over the time course induction. The two upper bands with the approximately 100 kD mass are the PEPC subunits and PEPC was barely detectable in day 0 but increased through day 4 with day 5 being approximately equal to day 4. We provide evidence of increased PEPC protein concentration, and increased PEPC enzyme activity in as little as 24 h after beginning of induction.

  • Phytochemical analysis on rice bran and its pitch was performed by the tool of TLC, UV- and IR-spetroscopy, so that it was found that they contained ${\gamma}-oryzanol$ and free sterol. GC-MS analysis of free sterol revealed that it was composed of ${\beta}-sitosterol$, campesterol and stigmasterol. Successive phytochemical analysis of ${\gamma}-oryzanol$ revealed that it was composed of ferulic acid ester of triterpene and sterol, respectively. Triterpene moieties of ${\gamma}-oryzanol$ were identified as follows: cycloartanol, cycloartenol, 24-methylenecycloartanol and unknown triterpene; And sterol moieties were found to be identical with free sterols. In addition, characteristic absorption band in UV spectrum (220-340 nm) was exclusively due to ${\gamma}-oryzanol$. Thus, it was suggested that rice brans of nearly all species of Oryza sativa can be quantitatively analyzed by UV absorption spectrometry, even when water soluble pigments was contained in the rice bran.

  • Radiation measurement technology has steadily improved and its usage is expanding in various industries such as nuclear medicine, security search, satellite, nondestructive testing, environmental industries and the domain of nuclear power plants (NPPs). Especially, the simultaneous measurements of gamma rays and neutrons can be even more critical for nuclear safety management of spent nuclear fuel and monitoring of the nuclear material. A semiconductor detector comprising cadmium, zinc, and tellurium (CZT) enables to detect gamma-rays due to the significant atomic weight of the elements via immediate neutron and gamma-ray detection. Semiconductor sensors might be used for nuclear safety management by monitoring nuclear materials and spent nuclear fuel with high spatial resolution as well as providing real-time measurements. We aim to introduce a portable nuclide-analysis device that enables the simultaneous measurements of neutrons and gamma rays using a CZT sensor. The detector has a high density and wide energy band gap, and thus exhibits highly sensitive physical characteristics and characteristics are required for performing neutron and gamma-ray detection. Portable nuclide-analysis device is used on NPP-decommissioning sites or the purpose of nuclear nonproliferation, it will rapidly detect the nuclear material and provide radioactive-material information. Eventually, portable nuclide-analysis device can reduce measurement time and economic costs by providing a basis for rational decision making.
