  • There are many problems in present truss-deck slab system for example welding defect, segregation, water leakage, rust and tarnish etc. These problems may be caused by spot welding thin galvanized steel plate and lattice bar. The TOX Joining Systems is to join metal sheets of different material and thickness with and without coating or painting without adding heat or a joining part. Newly developed TOX-deck slab system using non-welding joint is free from above mentioned problems. The objects of this study are suggestion of design strength of TOX joint by experimental and statistical analyses and development of window based program to design the TOX-deck slab system.

  • Zn-Mg-Al alloy hot-dip galvanized steel sheet has high corrosion resistance. Compared to conventional Zn coating with the same coating thickness, the high corrosion resistance Zn-Mg-Al coating is more corrosion-resistant. Various coating compositions are commercially produced and applied in diverse fields. However, these steel sheets typically contain up to 3 wt% magnesium. In recent years, there has been a growing demand for higher corrosion resistance in harsh corrosive environments. Therefore, variations in Mg and Al contents were investigated while evaluating primary properties and performance. As a result, we developed new alloy-coated steel with ultra-high corrosion resistance. A Zn-5 wt%Mg-Al coated steel sheet was evaluated for its corrosion resistance and various properties. As the amount of Mg added increased, the corrosion loss tended to decrease. The corrosion resistance of the coated steel sheet in a particular composition, the Zn-5 wt%Mg-Al coating sheet, was about 1.5 to 2 times higher than that of the conventional Zn-3 wt%Mg-Al coating sheet. Ultimately, this ultra-high corrosion-resistance coated steel sheet will provide a robust solution to conserve Zn resources and contribute to a low-carbon society.

  • Recently, galvanizing method is predominantly being used not only a economical point of view but also due to it s stability and long life. For example, guard rail of high way, all kinds of structures for ship etc. were protected with galvanizing and demand of galvanized structural materials was being increased with more and more. However, galvanized structures were inevitably being deteriorated with time eventually because they were corroded with solution of galvanizing film and exfoliation of it s film in the present severe corrosive environment. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the corrosion resistance of the galvanizing film through various methods such as variation of chemical composition of galvanizing bath, chromate treatment and coating treatment. In this study, three test specimens such as pure galvanizing, galvarium, and chromate treatment were submerged at tap water with inhibitor addition. And the effect of their corrosion resistance improvement was comparatively investigated with electrochemical method. Corrosion current density of the galvanized steel was the largest among three specimens, however, the galvarium steel showed the lowest corrosion current density. Futhermore, these three kinds of test specimens indicated considerably excellent corrosion resistance by dipped at tap water with inhibitor addition. Especially, the galvanized steel showed the best effect of corrosion resistance improvement than other test specimens.

  • When galvanized steel strip is produced through a continuous hot-dip galvanizing process, the thickness of the adhered zinc film is controlled by impinging a thin plane nitrogen gas jet. The thickness of the zinc film is generally affected by impinging pressure distribution, its gradient and shearing stress at the steel strip. These factors are influenced by static pressure of gas spraying at air knife nozzle, a nozzle-to-strip distance and strip and a geometric shape of the air knife, as well. At industries, galvanized steel strip is produced by changing static pressure of gas and a distance between the air knife nozzle and strip based on experimental values but remaining a geometric shape of nozzle. Splashing and check-mark strain can generally occur when a distance between the air knife nozzle and strip is too short, while ability of zinc removal can lower due to pressure loss of impinging jet when a distance between the air knife nozzle and strip is too long. In present study, buckling of the jet and change of static pressure are observed by analyzing flow characteristics of the impinging jet. The distance from the nozzle exit to the strip varies from 6 mm to 16 mm by an increment of 2 mm. Moreover, final coating thickness with change of a distance between the air knife nozzle and strip is compared with each case. An ability of zinc removal with the various distances is predicted by numerically calculating the final coating thickness.

  • Polymer coatings are commonly applied to metal substrates to prevent corrosion in aggressive environments such as high humidity and under salt water. Once the polymer coating has been breached, for example due to cracking or scratches, it loses its effectiveness, and corrosion can rapidly propagate across the substrate. The self-healing system we will describe prevents corrosion by healing the damage through a healing reaction triggered by the actual damage event. This self-healing coating solution can be easily applied to most substrate materials, and our dual-capsule healing system provides a general approach to be compatible with most common polymer matrices. Specifically, we expect an excellent anti-corrosion property of the self-healing coatings in damaged parts coated on galvanized metal substrates.

  • Gas wiping process of continuously hot-dip galvanized coating on steel strip has noise and coating problems. To improve the qualify of product, characteristics of air flow on the steel surface must be investigated. In this paper, fluid dynamic model of the gas flow is setup and solved numerically using STAR-CD. The effects of edge baffle, distance between steel plane edge and baffle, inlet pressure, and gap between air knife and strip steel surface are investigated, and it is concluded that edge baffle can reduce over-coating and edge built-up.

  • Antimony in the galvanizing bath had greater effect on the growth of grains in the solidification of molten coating layer and on the decrease of its surface roughness than lead. Particularly 0.01 wt % antimony in the galvanizing bath showed much stronger effect than expected considering its low surface tension value. These effects were seemingly originated from the development of preferred orientation of (0002) plane parallel to steel surface. Antimony was found to be widely distributed in form of orderly arrangement throughout the coating layer unlike lead from the results of surface analyses on coating layers as received and on those as etched in chromating solution. In addition, supercooling in the 0.07 % antimony and the 0.2 % lead galvanizing bath was also measured to be in the range of$ 2~4^{\circ}C$ and $9~11^{\circ}C$ respectively, and it indicates that antimony forms fine dendrite expanded rapidly on the steel surface.

  • The resistance spot welding of high strength steel degrades the weldability because of its high strength with rich chemical composition and coating layer to protect from corrosion. During the each resistance welding process the electrodes tip reacts with coating layer, then subsequently deteriorates and shorten electrode life. In this study, the Al-coated HPF (Hot Press Forming) steels and Zn-coated TRIP steels were used to investigate the electrode life for resistance spot welding. Experimental results show that the reactivity of Al-coating on HPF steels to electrode tip surface behaviors different from the conventional Zn-coated high strength steels. The electrode tip diameter and nugget size in electrode life test of Al-coated HPF steels are observed to be constant with respect to weld numbers. For Al-coated HPF steels, the hard aluminum oxide layer being formed during high temperature heat treatment process reduces reactivity with copper electrode during the resistance welding process. Eventually, the electrode life in resistance spot welding of Al-coated HPF steels has the advantage over the galvanized steel sheets.

  • An attempt was made to apply digital image correlation (DIC) strain analysis to in-situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations of bending deformation to quantify local strain distribution inside a ZnMgAl-alloy coating in deformation. Interstitial-free steel sheets were hot-dipped in a Zn-3Mg-6Al (mass%) alloy melt at 400 ℃ for 2 s. The specimens were deformed using a miniature-sized 4-point bending test machine inside the SEM chamber. The observed in situ SEM images were used for DIC strain analysis. The hot-dip ZnMgAl-alloy coating exhibited a solidification microstructure composed of a three-phase eutectic of fine Al (fcc), Zn (hcp), and Zn2Mg phases surrounding the primary solidified Al phases. The relatively coarsened Zn2Mg phases were locally observed inside the ZnMgAl-alloy coating. The DIC strain analysis revealed that the strain was localized in the primary solidified Al phases and fine eutectic microstructure around the Zn2Mg phase. The results indicated high deformability of the multi-phase microstructure of the ZnMgAl-alloy coating.
