In the earlier papers we analyzed the axisymmetric, nonstationary electrodynamics of the central black hole and a surrounding thin accretion disk in an active galactic nucleus. Based on those papers we analyze the axisymmetric, nonstationary force-free black hole magnetosphere and the motion of the plasma. We concentrate on deriving the relations between the velocity components of the plasma and those of the accreting magnetic field lines. We conclude that the former are given by the sum of the latter and the magnetic field terms.
Observations with EUVE, ROSAT, and BeepoSAX have shown that some clusters of galaxies produce intense EUV emission. These findings have produced considerable interest; over 100 papers have been published on this topic in the refereed literature. A notable suggestion as to the source of this radiation is that it is a 'warm' (106 K) intracluster medium which, if present, would constitute the major baryonic component of the universe. A more recent variation of this theme is that this material is 'warm-hot' intergalactic material condensing onto clusters. Alternatively, inverse Compton scattering of low energy cosmic rays against cosmic microwave background photons has been proposed as the source of this emission. Various origins of these particles have been posited, including an old (${\~}$Giga year) population of cluster cosmic rays; particles associated with relativistic jets in the cluster; and cascading particles produced by shocks from sub-cluster merging. The observational situation has been quite uncertain with many reports of detections which have been subsequently contradicted by analyses carried out by other groups. Evidence supporting a thermal and a non-thermal origin has been reported. The existing EUV, FUV, and optical data will be briefly reviewed and clarified. Direct observational evidence from a number of different satellites now rules out a thermal origin for this radiation. A new examination of subtle details of the EUV data suggests a new source mechanism: inverse Compton scattered emission from secondary electrons in the cluster. This suggestion will be discussed in the context of the data.

We present the results of optical differential photometry of five blazars [PKS0219+428 (3C66A), PKS 0235+164 (AO 0235+16), H0414+019, PKS 0851+202 (OJ 287) and QSO 1807+698 (3C 371)] that were observed on 7 nights between November 05, 1997 and December 29, 1998, using the B and the V band filters. We have detected microvariations in four blazars (3C66A, AO 0235+16, H04l4+019, and OJ 287). In addition, the light curve of AO 0235+16 has displayed a mini-flare when the brightness of this source was decreasing. Night-to-night variations have also been detected in 3C66A, H04l4+019, and OJ 287. The results of our observations are discussed in the framework of accretion disk phenomena (magnetic flares or hot spots in accretion disks) and jet phenomena (plasma instabilities in jets).

The Korean very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) network (KVN) and VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) Array (KaVA) is the first international VLBI array dedicated to high-frequency (23 GHz (K-band) and 43 GHz (Q-band)) observations in East Asia. To evaluate the imagine capability of KaVA, we performed imaging observations of three bright active galactic nuclei (AGNs) known for their complex morphologies: 4C 39.25, 3C 273, and M87 by KaVA at K-/Q-band. Our KaVA images reveal extended outflows with complex substructure such as knots and limb brightening, in agreement with previous observations by other VLBI facilities. Angular resolutions are better than 1.4 and 0.8 milliarcsecond (max) at K-/Q-band, respectively. KaVA achieves a high dynamic range of ~1000, more than three times the value achieved by VERA. We conclude that KaVA is a powerful array with a great potential for the study of AGN outflows, at least comparable to the best existing radio interferometric arrays.
Galaxy clusters are known to host many active galaxies (AGNs) with radio jets, which could expand to form radio bubbles with relativistic electrons in the intracluster medium (ICM). It has been suggested that fossil relativistic electrons contained in remnant bubbles from extinct radio galaxies can be re-accelerated to radio-emitting energies by merger-driven shocks via diffusive shock acceleration (DSA), leading to the birth of radio relics detected in clusters. In this study we assume that such bubble consist primarily of thermal gas entrained from the surrounding medium and dynamically-insignificant amounts of relativistic electrons. We also consider several realistic models for magnetic fields in the cluster outskirts, including the ICM field that scales with the gas density as $B_{ICM}{\infty}n^{0.5}_{ICM}$. Then we perform time-dependent DSA simulations of a spherical shock that runs into a lower-density but higher-temperature bubble with the ratio $n_b/n_{ICM}{\approx}T_{ICM}/T_b{\approx}0.5$. We find that inside the bubble the shock speed increases by about 20 %, but the Mach number decreases by about 15% in the case under consideration. In this re-acceleration model, the observed properties of a radio relic such as radio flux, spectral index, and integrated spectrum would be governed mainly by the presence of seed relativistic electrons and the magnetic field profile as well as shock dynamics. Thus it is crucial to understand how fossil electrons are deposited by AGNs in the ICM and how the downstream magnetic field evolves behind the shock in detailed modeling of radio relics.
One of the most intriguing questions regarding black hole (BH)-galaxy co-evolution picture is how the BH accretion, or active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity is linked to star formation (SF) activity. While it is suggested that AGN luminosity of quasars correlates with SF luminosity, it is still unclear how AGN activity is connected to SF activity based on host galaxy properties. Utilizing AKARI's unique slit-less spectroscopic capability and wavelength coverage, we probed star formation activity of several types of AGNs by measuring the PAH 3.3 ${\mu}m$ emission. First, we detected the PAH 3.3 ${\mu}m$ emission from seven out of 27 Seyfert type-1 galaxies at z~0.36. While these galaxies deviate significantly from the local Mbh-${\sigma}$ relation meaning their black holes proceed the host galaxies in terms of evolution, they appear to follow the correlation between nuclear SF and AGN activities of local Seyfert type-1 galaxies. This implies that SF and AGN activities are directly connected at the nuclear region for these Seyfert type-1 AGNs. We also obtained 2-5 ${\mu}m$ spectra for subsamples of Quasar Spectroscopic Observation in Near-infrared Grism (QSONG) which consists of reverberation-mapped AGNs and PG-QSOs. We detected the PAH 3.3 ${\mu}m$ emission from 16 out of 31 reverberation-mapped AGNs and 10 out of 49 PG-QSOs and measured their line strengths. We present the correlations between SF and AGN activities and discuss if there is any dependency of the correlations on properties of host galaxies, such as morphology, or the presence of radio jets.

We investigate the radio properties of the dwarf galaxy SDSS J133245.62+263449.3 which shows optical signatures of black hole activity. Dwarf galaxies are known to host intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) with masses $M_{BH}{\sim}10^{4-6}M_{\odot}$, some of them being radio loud. Recently, Reines et al. (2013) found dwarf galaxy candidates which show signatures of being black hole hosts based on optical spectral lines. SDSS J133245.62+263449.3 is one of them; it shows a flux density of ~ 20 mJy at 1.4 GHz, which corresponds to $L_{1.4GHz}{\sim}10^{23}W\;Hz^{-1}$. This is much brighter than other black hole host dwarf galaxies. However, star formation activity can contribute to radio continuum emission as well. To understand the nature of the radio emission from SDSS J133245.62+263449.3, we imaged this radio loud dwarf galaxy at low frequencies (325 MHz and 610 MHz) using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). We present here the high resolution images from our GMRT observations. While we detect no obvious extended emission from radio jets from the central AGN, we do find the emission to be moderately extended and unlikely to be dominated by disk star formation. VLBI observations using the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) are now being planned to understand the emission morphology and radiation mechanism.

The gas cloud G2 falling toward Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, is supposed to provide valuable information on the physics of accretion flows and the environment of the black hole. We observed Sgr A* with four European stations of the Global Millimeter Very Long Baseline Interferometry Array (GMVA) at 86 GHz on 1 October 2013 when parts of G2 had already passed the pericenter. We searched for possible transient asymmetric structure - such as jets or winds from hot accretion flows - around Sgr A* caused by accretion of material from G2. The interferometric closure phases (which are zero if the spatial brightness distribution of the target is symmetric, and deviate from zero otherwise) remained zero within errors during the observation time. We thus conclude that Sgr A* did not show significant asymmetric (in the observer frame) outflows in late 2013. Using simulations, we constrain the size of the outflows that we could have missed to ${\approx}2.5$ mas along the major axis, ${\approx}0.4$ mas along the minor axis of the beam, corresponding to approximately 232 and 35 Schwarzschild radii, respectively; we thus probe spatial scales on which the jets of radio galaxies are suspected to convert magnetic into kinetic energy. As probably less than 0.2 Jy of the flux from Sgr A* can be attributed to accretion from G2, one finds an effective accretion rate ${\eta}M{\leq}1.5{\times}10^9kg/s{\approx}7.7{\times}10^{-9}M_{earth}/yr$ for material from G2. Exploiting the kinetic jet power-accretion power relation of radio galaxies, one finds that the rate of accretion of matter that ends up in jets is limited to $M{\leq}10^{17}kg/s{\approx}0.5M_{Earth}/yr$ less than about 20% of the mass of G2. Accordingly, G2 appears to be largely stable against loss of angular momentum and subsequent (partial) accretion at least on time scales ${\leq}1$ year.
We present results of long-term multi-wavelength polarization observations of the powerful blazar 3C 279 after its γ-ray flare on 2013 December 20. We followed up this flare with single-dish polarization observations using two 21-m telescopes of the Korean VLBI Network. Observations carried out weekly from 2013 December 25 to 2015 January 11, at 22 GHz, 43 GHz, 86 GHz simultaneously, as part of the Monitoring Of GAmma-ray Bright AGN (MOGABA) program. We measured 3C 279 total flux densities of 22–34 Jy at 22 GHz, 15–28 Jy (43 GHz), and 10–21 Jy (86 GHz), showing mild variability of ≤ 50 % over the period of our observations. The spectral index between 22 GHz and 86 GHz ranged from −0.13 to −0.36. Linear polarization angles were 27°–38°, 30°–42°, and 33°–50° at 22 GHz, 43 GHz, and 86 GHz, respectively. The degree of linear polarization was in the range of 6–12 %, and slightly decreased with time at all frequencies. We investigated Faraday rotation and depolarization of the polarized emission at 22–86 GHz, and found Faraday rotation measures (RM) of −300 to −1200 rad m−2 between 22 GHz and 43 GHz, and −800 to −5100 rad m−2 between 43 GHz and 86 GHz. The RM values follow a power law with a mean power law index a of 2.2, implying that the polarized emission at these frequencies travels through a Faraday screen in or near the jet. We conclude that the regions emitting polarized radio emission may be different from the region responsible for the 2013 December γ-ray flare and are maintained by the dominant magnetic field perpendicular to the direction of the radio jet at milliarcsecond scales.
I briefly review the current theoretical status of the origins of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays with special emphasis on models associated with galaxy clusters. Some basic constraints on models are laid out, including those that apply both to so-called 'top-down' and 'bottom-up' models. The origins of these UHECRs remain an enigma; no model stands out as a clear favorite. Large scale structure formation shocks, while very attractive conceptually in this context, are unlikely to be able to accelerate particles to energies much above $10^{18}eV$. Terminal shocks in relativistic AGN jets seem to be more viable candidates physically, but suffer from their rarity in the local universe. Several other, representative, models are outlined for comparison.
