  • Pattern recognition process is made up of the feature extraction in the pre-processing, the pattern clustering by training and the recognition process. This paper presents the F-LVQ (Fuzzy Learning Vector Quantization) pattern classification model which is optimized by the fuzzy membership function for the OCR(Optical Character Recognition) system. We trained 220 numeric patterns of 22 Hangul and English fonts and tested 4840 patterns whose forms are changed variously. As a result of this experiment, it is proved that the proposed model is more effective and robust than other typical LVQ models.

  • In this study, we deal with face recognition using fuzzy-based Fisherface method. The well-known Fisherface method is more insensitive to large variation in light direction, face pose, and facial expression than Principal Component Analysis method. Usually, the various methods of face recognition including Fisherface method give equal importance in determining the face to be recognized, regardless of typicalness. The main point here is that the proposed method assigns a feature vector transformed by PCA to fuzzy membership rather than assigning the vector to particular class. In this method, fuzzy membership degrees are obtained from FKNN(Fuzzy K-Nearest Neighbor) initialization. Experimental results show better recognition performance than other methods for ORL and Yale face databases.

  • The turn-to-turn short is one major fault of the motor faults of BLDC motors and can appear frequently. When the fault happens, the motor can be operated without breakdown, but it is necessary to maintain the motor for continuous working. In past research, several methods have been applied to detect winding faults. The representative approaches have been focusing on current signals, which can give important information to extract features and to detect faults. In this study, current sensors were installed to measure signals for fault detection of BLDC motors. In this study, the Park's vector method was used to extract the features and to isolate the faults from the current measured by sensors. Because this method can consider the three-phase current values, it is useful to detect features from one-phase and three-phase faults. After extracting two-dimensional features, the final feature was generated by using the two-dimensional values using the distance equation. The values were used in fuzzy similarity to isolate the faults. Fuzzy similarity is an available tool to diagnose the fault without model generation and the fault was converted to the percentage value that can be considered as possibility of the fault.

  • This paper proposes an effective self-turning algorithm based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for fuzzy speed control of the indirect vector controlled induction motor. Indirect vector control method divides and controls stator current by the flux and the torque producing current so that the dynamic characteristic of induction motor may be superior. However, if motor parameter changes, the flux current and the torque producing one's coupling happens and deteriorates the dynamic characteristic. The fuzzy speed controller of an induction motor has the robustness over the effect of this parameter variation than a conventional PI speed controller in some degree. This paper improves its adaptability by adding the self-tuning mechanism to the fuzzy controller. For tracking the speed command, its membership functions are adjusted using ANN adaptation mechanism. This adaptability could be embodied by moving the center positions of the membership functions. Proposed self-tuning method has wide adaptability than existent fuzzy controller or PI controller and is proved robust about parameter variation through Matlab/Simulink simulation.

  • In this paper, a drive system of induction motor with high performance is realized on the viewpoint of the design and experiment, using the DSP (TMS320F240). The speed controller for induction motor drive system is designed on the basis of a neuro-fuzzy network. The neuro-fuzzy controller acts as a feed-forward controller that provides the right control input for the plant and accomplishes error back-propagation algorithm through the network. The proposed network is used to achieve the high speedy calculation of the space vector PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) and to build the neuro-fuzzy control algorithm, for the real-time control. The proposed neuro-fuzzy algorithm on the basis of DSP shows that experimental results have good performance for the precise speed control of an induction motor drive system. It is confirmed that the proposed controller could provide more improved control performance than conventional v/f vector controllers through the experiment.

  • In this paper, we propose a fuzzy neural network pattern classifier utilizing fuzzy information. This system works without any a priori information about the number of clusters or cluster centers. It classifies each input according to the distance between the weights and the normalized input using Bezdek's [1] fuzzy membership value equation. This model returns the correct membership value for each input vector and find several cluster centers. Some experimental studies of comparison with other algorithms will be presented for sample data sets.

  • A switching control using multiple gains in the fuzzy rule is newly proposed for an abruptly changing hydraulic servo system. The proposed scheme employs fuzzy PID control, where modified input parameters are used, and LVQNN(Learning Vector Quantization Neural Network) as a switching controller (supervisor). Simulation and experimental studies have been carried out to validate and illustrate the proposed controller.

  • In fuzzy expert systems or database systems that have huge volumes of fuzzy data or large fuzzy rules, the inference time is much increased. Therefore, a high performance parallel fuzzy computing environment is needed. In this paper, we propose a parallel fuzzy inference mechanism in parallel computing environment. In this, fuzzy rules are distributed and executed simultaneously. The ONE_TO_ALL algorithm is used to broadcast the fuzzy input vector to the all nodes. The results of the MIN/MAX operations are transferred to the output processor by the ALL_TO_ONE algorithm. By parallel processing of fuzzy rules or data, the parallel fuzzy inference algorithm extracts effective parallel ism and achieves a good speed factor.

  • This paper presents a new fuzzy speed controller based on a fuzzy angular acceleration observer to realize a robust speed control of permanent magnet synchronous motors(PMSM). The proposed speed controller needs the information of the angular acceleration, thus the first-order fuzzy acceleration observer is designed. The LMI existence condition is given for the proposed fuzzy speed controller, and the gain matrices of the controller are calculated. It is verified that the augmented control system consisting of the fuzzy speed controller and the fuzzy acceleration observer is mathematically stable. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed acceleration observer-based fuzzy speed controller, the simulation and experimental results are shown under motor parameter variations. It is definitely proven that the proposed control scheme can precisely track the speed of a permanent magnet synchronous motor.

  • This paper is addressed to welding defect feature vector selection and implementation method of welding defect classifier using fuzzy techniques. We compare IAV, zero-crossing number as time domain analysis, power spectrum coefficient as frequency domain, histogram as both domain for welding defect feature selection. We choose histogram as feature vector by graph analysis and find out that maximum frequent occurrence number and section of corresponding signal scale in relative histogram show obvious difference between normal welding and voiding with penetration depth defect. We implement a fuzzy welding defect classifier using these feature vector, test it to verify its effectiveness for 695 welding data frame which consist of 4000 sampled data. As result of test, correct classification rate is 92.96%. Lab experimental results show a effectiveness of fuzzy welding defect classifier using relative histogram for practical Laser welding monitoring system in industry.
