This research presents the design and numerical assessment of composite steel-concrete frame structures with welded dissipative fuses. The assessment has been carried out based on linear response spectrum, nonlinear static pushover and time history procedures. The analytical expressions which define the envelope of the nonlinear response of the dissipative fuses are first presented and calibrated against experimental results available in literature. The assessment is then carried out according to a design methodology proposed herein. Outcomes of the numerical assessment indicate that the use of welded dissipative fuses successfully limited damage within the replaceable parts. Furthermore, although structures with dissipative fuses present lower strength and, generally, lower displacement capacity, their displacement ductility and global dissipative performance are generally higher than conventional structures, especially when the structure with dissipative fuses presents a dissipative configuration adjusted to the bending moment distribution diagram calculated for the applied seismic action.

The demand for protection of power electronic applications has during the last couple of years increased regarding the high-power IGBT modules. Even with an active protection, a high power IGBT still has a risk of exhibiting a violent rupture in the case of a fault if IGBT Fuses do not protect it. By introducing fuses into the circuit this will increase the circuit inductance and slight increase the over-voltage during the turn-off of the diode and the IGBT. It is therefore vital when using fuses that the added inductance is kept at a minimum. This paper discuss three issues regarding the IGBT Fuse protection. First, the problem of adding inductance of existing High-Speed and new Typower fuses in DC-link circuit is treated, second a short discussion of the protection of the IGBT module is done, and finally, the impact of the high frequency loading on the current carrying capability of the fuses is presented.

After strong earthquakes conventional frames used worldwide in multi - story steel buildings (e.g. moment resisting frames) are not well positioned according to reparability. Two innovative systems for seismic resistant steel frames incorporated with dissipative fuses were developed within the European Research Program "FUSEIS" (Vayas et al. 2013). The first, FUSEIS1, resembles a vertical Vierendeel beam and is composed of two closely spaced strong columns rigidly connected to multiple beams. In the second system, FUSEIS2, a discontinuity is introduced in the composite beams of a moment resisting frame and the dissipative devices are steel plates connecting the two parts. The FUSEIS system is able to dissipate energy by means of inelastic deformations in the fuses and combines ductility and architectural transparency with stiffness. In case of strong earthquakes damage concentrates only in the fuses which behave as self-centering systems able to return the structure to its initial undeformed shape. Repair work after such an event is limited only to replacing the fuses. Experimental and numerical investigations were performed to study the response of the fuses system. Code relevant design rules for the seismic design of frames with dissipative FUSEIS and practical recommendations on the selection of the appropriate fuses as a function of the most important parameters and member verifications have been formulated and are included in a Design Guide. This article presents the design and performance of building frames with FUSEIS 1-1 based on models calibrated on the experimental results.

In this paper, we prepared miniature fuse fabricated with carbon nanotube (CNT) fiber for the use of low rated current under 1 A and high speed operation under 4ms. CNT fuses were fabricated in the form of universal modular fuse (UMF) with different diameter of CNT fibers defined by multiplying the CNT threads. Electrical properties of the CNT fuses were measured such as resistance, rated current, and operation time with current. Resistance of the CNT fuse decreased and rated current increased with the diameter of the CNT fuses, respectively. Consequently, the operation time with current increased with the diameter of the CNT fuses. The CNT fuses fabricated in this work had broad range of low rated current from 0.05 to 1.25 A by multiplying the CNT threads. Operation time was measured about 3.6ms which was applicable to the UMF.
The primary objectives of this research are to investigate the energy factor response of steel moment resisting frame (MRF) systems equipped with fuses subject to ground motions and to develop an energy-based evaluation approach for evaluating the damage-control behavior of the system. First, the energy factor of steel MRF systems with fuses below the resilience threshold is derived utilizing the energy balance equation considering bilinear oscillators with significant post-yielding stiffness ratio, and the effect of structural nonlinearity on the energy factor is investigated by conducting a parametric study covering a wide range of parameters. A practical transformation approach is also proposed to associate the energy factor of steel MRF systems with fuses with classic design spectra based on elasto-plastic systems. Then, the energy balance is extended to structural systems, and an energy-based procedure for damage-control evaluation is proposed and a damage-control index is also derived. The approach is then applied to two types of steel MRF systems with fuses to explore the applicability for quantifying the damage-control behavior. The rationality of the proposed approach and the accuracy for identifying the damage-control behavior are demonstrated by nonlinear static analyses and incremental dynamic analyses utilizing prototype structures.
This paper deals with the interrupting characteristics of fuses element in different media of arc extinguisher. Aluminum hydro-oxide, boron nitride, silica and there size have been investigated here for their prospects as filling media in heavy current, high breaking capacity fuses. The result of these study are compared with those on silica sand at high current. This study demonstrates that silica sand is far superior filler in fuses for heavy current interrupting then the compound tested.
To protect the damages or the disasters caused by overheating of industrial electric equipments or electric home appliances, a temperature sensitive thermal fuse is generally used in those equipments. Thermal fuses cutoff the current flow when the temperature of the electric equipments are abnormally overheated and over the certain temperature. Therefore thermal fuse is one of the most important elements in the sense of safety. Thermal fuses are classified into two types according to thermally sensitive materials, a low temperature melting alloy and an organic chemical compound. Domestic products of thermal fuses are now only with an organic chemical compound. Domestic products tested by using cutoff test and aging test etc. are satisfied UL specification. It's shown that the accuracy and the precision of the domestic products are as good as those of the overseas products obtained UL mark. However, some of domestic products show the reclosing problem which is mainly related the safety. This problem should be solved to make the reliable thermal fuses. In this paper, our Interest is to find out the causes of reclosing. In the comparison between thermally sensitive materials occurred reclosing and those occurred no reclosing, the test effects show that the characteristics of emitting heat and absorbing heat are different.

This paper investigates the ductility demands of steel frames equipped with self-centring fuses under near-fault earthquake motions considering multiple yielding stages. The study is commenced by verifying a trilinear self-centring hysteretic model accounting for multiple yielding stages of steel frames equipped with self-centring fuses. Then, the seismic response of single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems following the validated trilinear self-centring hysteretic law is examined by a parametric study using a near-fault earthquake ground motion database composed of 200 earthquake records as input excitations. Based on a statistical investigation of more than fifty-two (52) million inelastic spectral analyses, the effect of the post-yield stiffness ratios, energy dissipation coefficient and yielding displacement ratio on the mean ductility demand of the system is examined in detail. The analysis results indicate that the increase of post-yield stiffness ratios, energy dissipation coefficient and yielding displacement ratio reduces the ductility demands of the self-centring oscillators responding in multiple yielding stages. A set of empirical expressions for quantifying the ductility demands of trilinear self-centring hysteretic oscillators are developed using nonlinear regression analysis of the analysis result database. The proposed regression model may offer a practical tool for designers to estimate the ductility demand of a low-to-medium rise self-centring steel frame equipped with self-centring fuses progressing in the ultimate stage under near-fault earthquake motions in design and evaluation.
