Sizing, geometry and topology optimization of trusses using force method and supervised charged system search

  • In this article, the force method and Charged System Search (CSS) algorithm are used for the analysis and optimal design of truss structures. The CSS algorithm is employed as the optimization tool and the force method is utilized for analysis. In this paper in addition to member's cross sections, redundant forces, geometry and topology variables are considered as the optimization variables. Minimum complementary energy principle is used directly to analyze the structure. In the presented method, redundant forces are calculated by the CSS in order to minimize the energy function. Combination of the CSS and force method leads to an efficient algorithm in comparison to some of the optimization algorithms.

Frequency optimization for laminated composite plates using extended layerwise approach

  • This paper deals with the applicability of extended layerwise optimization method (ELOM) for frequency optimization of laminated composite plates. The design objective is the maximization of the fundamental frequency of the laminated plates. The fibre orientations in the layers are considered as design variables. The first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is used for the finite element solution of the laminates. Finally, the numerical analysis is carried out to show the applicability of extended layerwise optimization algorithm of laminated plates for different parameters such as plate aspect ratios and boundary conditions.

A Classification Method of Anthropometric Variables for Improved Usability of Anthropometric Data (인체측정자료의 사용성 제고를 위한 인체측정변수 분류 방법)

  • Anthropometric data is a fundamental resource in developing ergonomic products and workplaces. However, designers often experience difficulty in searching anthropometric data relevant to the design due to the technicality of anthropometric terminologies, ambiguity in the description of measurement method for some anthropometric variables, and inefficiency of existing search methods for anthropometric data. The present study suggests a method to develop a classification system of anthropometric variables for systematic, efficient search of anthropometric data. The proposed method first classifies anthropometric variables according to body segment and type of variable, and then arranges anthropometric variables of the same body segment and variable type by comparing the heights of their reference points. The proposed classification method was applied to establish a classification system of 66 anthropometric variables that were selected for an automotive interior design. Then the established anthropometric classification system was utilized to design a search interface of a web-based anthropometric data retrieval system.

Variable Selection and Outlier Detection for Automated K-means Clustering

  • An important problem in cluster analysis is the selection of variables that define cluster structure that also eliminate noisy variables that mask cluster structure; in addition, outlier detection is a fundamental task for cluster analysis. Here we provide an automated K-means clustering process combined with variable selection and outlier identification. The Automated K-means clustering procedure consists of three processes: (i) automatically calculating the cluster number and initial cluster center whenever a new variable is added, (ii) identifying outliers for each cluster depending on used variables, (iii) selecting variables defining cluster structure in a forward manner. To select variables, we applied VS-KM (variable-selection heuristic for K-means clustering) procedure (Brusco and Cradit, 2001). To identify outliers, we used a hybrid approach combining a clustering based approach and distance based approach. Simulation results indicate that the proposed automated K-means clustering procedure is effective to select variables and identify outliers. Effect Analysis of Factors on Satisfaction of Fundamental Education for Major Course Learning (전공기초교육 프로그램 만족도에 영향을 미치는 변인 분석)

  • This study investigates significant factors regarding college freshman engineering students and analyses each factors influence on student satisfaction in the College of Engineering core curriculum. We carried out a survey targeting 505 students who completed their fundamental education for major course learning in the 2011 academic year while attending one college in Gwangju and ruled out inadequate respondents. A total sample size 437 students were analyzed. The seven independent variables are academic fees, academic term period, academic environment of the classroom, learning material content, time of lecture, student sincerity and student need for the program. The dependent variable is fundamental education satisfaction level. As a result of multiple regression analysis, the following factors were found to be significant in the following order: learning material content, time of lecture, student sincerity, student need for the program, academic fees and academic environment of the classroom. On the other side academic term period was not significant. For improving fundamental education satisfaction, there is a need for prudent consideration regarding learning material development and lecture times. Also further investigation should take place for policies necessary for increasing learner motivation and sincerity, and expand appropriate conditions for learners to become self-aware of the education they need within their major.

  • The main purpose of this study was to investigate the level of the soundness of home life. This study was focused to analyze the soundness of home life according to the objective variables and the psychological variables. It was not also to provide some fundamental information that helped to elevate the home life soundness, but also to prevent family problems. The subjects of this study was married female teachers living in Seoul area. The sample size was 237. The significant results were as follows: 1) The soundness of home life differed significantly according to age, income, the number of children, and family pattern among the objective variables. 2) The soundness of home life differed significantly according to self-actualization and internal-external of control. 3) The variables such as income, self-actualization and internal-external of control affected the soundness of home life.

  • Comsumer dissatisfaction is a concept which provides fundamental couse for consumerism movement. The purpose of this study are as follows; 1. To investigate the tendency of the housewive's consumer dissatisfaction. 2. To find out the determinants of the consumer dissatisfaction. The major results of empirical study are; 1) The ousewive's are dissatisfied with their consumption lives. 2) There is significant difference in sunsumer dissatisfaction according to the demographic variables such as housewive's age, education. 3) There is significant difference I consumer dissatisfaction according to sociopsychological variables such as disconfirmation, consumer attitude toward business, consumer experience. 4. Consumer dissatisfaction is influenced by disconfirmation, attitude toward business, consumer experience.

  • We have developed CNS(Compact Nuclear Simulator) which can be used for the fundamental training of the nuclear power plant operators. The application software for CNS consists of simulation engine(analyzer code), instructor station software, and man-machine interface software. Each application software is regarded as one black box and the communication of black boxes is performed by the predefined shared memory variables. In this paper, we discuss our experience for CNS development.

Country Fundamentals and Currency Excess Returns

  • We examine whether country fundamentals help explain the cross-section of currency excess returns. For this purpose, we consider fundamental variables such as default risk, foreign exchange rate regime, capital control as well as interest rate in the multi-factor model framework. Our empirical results show that fundamental factors explain a large part of the cross-section of currency excess returns. The zero-intercept restriction of the factor model is not rejected for most currencies. They also reveal that our factor model with country fundamentals performs better than a factor model with usual investment-style factors. Our main empirical results are based on 2001-2010 balanced panel data of 19 major currencies. This paper may fill the gap between country fundamentals and practitioners' strategies on currency investment.

  • In this paper, the condensation method which is based on the Rayleigh-Ritz method, is described for the free vibration analysis of axially loaded slightly curved beams subject to partial axial restraints. If the longitudinal inertia is neglected, some of the Rayleigh-Ritz minimization equations are independent of the frequency. These equations can be used to formulate a relationship between the weighting coefficients associated with the lateral and longitudinal displacements, which leads to "connection coefficient matrix". Once this matrix is formed, it is then substituted into the remaining Rayleigh-Ritz equations to obtain an eigenvalue equation with a reduced matrix size. This method has been applied to simply supported and partially clamped beams with three different shapes of imperfection. The results indicate that for small imperfections resembling the fundamental vibration mode, the sum of the square of the fundamental natural and a non-dimensional axial load ratio normalized with respect to the fundamental critical load is approximately proportional to the square of the central displacement.
