  • In this paper, a general model is developed to predict the distribution of interfacial shear and normal stresses of FG beam reinforced by porous FGM plates under mechanical loading. The beam is assumed to be isotropic with a constant Poisson's ratio and power law elastic modulus through the beam thickness. Stress distributions, depending on an inhomogeneity constant, were calculated and presented in graphicals forms. It is shown that both the normal and shear stresses at the interface are influenced by the material and geometry parameters of the composite beam, and it is shown that the inhomogeneities play an important role in the distribution of interfacial stresses. The results presented in the paper can serve as a benchmark for future analyses of functionally graded beams strengthened by imperfect varying properties plates. Numerical comparisons between the existing solutions and the present new solution enable a clear appreciation of the effects of various parameters. The results of this study indicated that the imperfect functionally graded panel strengthening systems are effective in enhancing flexural behavior of the strengthened FGM beams. This research is helpful in understanding the mechanical behaviour of the interface and design of hybrid structures.

  • The high temperature occurs due to the combustion gas from engine in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). The high temperature may cause serious damages in UAV structure. The Functionally Graded Material (FGM) is chosen as a candidate material of the engine duct structure. A functionally graded material (FGM) is a two- component mixture composed by compositional gradient materials from one material to the other. In contrast, traditional composite materials are homogeneous mixtures, and involve compositions between the desirable properties of the component materials. Since significant proportions of an FGM contain the pure form of each material, the need for compromise is eliminated. The properties of both components can be fully utilized. Thermal stress analysis of FGM layers (20, 40, 60, 80 and 100) is performed in this paper. In addition, the creep behavior of FGM applied in duct structure of an engine is analyzed for better understanding of FGM characteristics.

  • In this research the hygro-thermo-mechanical loading and micromechanical model effects on bending behavior of functionally graded material plates resting on Winkler and Pasternak elastic foundations, the higher order shear deformation theory is used here. The material properties of the plate: young's modulus, thermal coefficient and moisture expansion coefficient are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to various micromechanical models starting with the Voigt's model which is commonly used in most functionally graded plates studies to the Reuss's, LRVE's and Mori-Tanaka's models. The principle of virtual displacement is used to determine the equilibrium equations and the a several numerical results are given to validate the precision of the present method for bending behavior of FGM plates subjected to hygro-thermo-mechanical loading resting on elastic foundations. Afterwards, a parametric study is conducted to determine the effect of different parameters on the deflection of the FGM plates like micromechanical models, type of loading and plate geometry. In the lights of the present research, it can be concluded that the present theory is accurate and simple in predicting the deflection behavior of functionally graded plates under hygro-thermo-mechanical effects and micromechanical models.

  • The development of a new material which should be continuously use under severe environment of very high temperature has been urgently requested. For the development of such super-heat resistant materials, the main problem is not only to make the superior thermal barrier properties but also to actively release thermal stress. So, a new concept of functionally graded material(FGM) has been proposed to overcome this problem. A composition and microstructure of FGM are varied continuously from place to place in ways designed to provide it with the maximum function of mitigating the induced thermal stress. So, FGM can be applied in the aerospace, the electronic and the medical field, etc.. In this study, thermal stress analysis of sintering PSZ/NiCrAlY graded material was conducted theoretically using a finite-element program. The temperature condition was sintering temperature assuming a cooling-down process up to room temperature. Fracture damage mechanism was anlayzed by the parameters of residual stress. It could be known that FGM provided with the function of mitigating the induced thermal stress.

  • In this paper, we investigate the natural frequencies and buckling loads of functionally graded material (FGM) plates and shells, using a quasi-conforming shell element that accounts for the transverse shear strains and rotary inertia. The eigenvalue of the FGM plates and shells are calculated by varying the volume fraction of the ceramic and metallic constituents using a sigmoid function, but their Poisson's ratios of the FGM plates and shells are assumed to be constant. The expressions of the membrane, bending and shear stiffness of FGM shell element are more complicated combination of material properties than a homogeneous element. In order to validate the finite element numerical solutions, the Navier's solutions of rectangular plates based on the first-order shear deformation theory are presented. The present numerical solutions of composite and sigmoid FGM (S-FGM) plates are proved by the Navier's solutionsand various examples of composite and FGM structures are presented. The present results are in good agreement with the Navier's theoretical solutions.

  • A vacuum Interrupter (VI), a core part that composes the breaking part of medium-voltage vacuum circuit breaker (VCB), has the excellent insulation performance and arc-extinguishing capability. $SF_6$ gas had been used for the external insulation of VIs since the dielectric strength of $SF_6$ gas is superior to that of other insulation gases. However, because of environmental problems related with global warming, a solid-insulated technology was recently researched. The functionally graded material (FGM), as changing spatially the distribution of the relative permittivity inside an insulator, can reduce the electric field stress at the specific region. Especially, the external insulation performance of the VI with the molded FGM insulator is greatly improved as compared with that of the existing VI or the VI with a new external shield. In this paper, the effectiveness of this FGM insulator is verified by the numerical simulation.

  • Aluminum (Al) and copper(Cu) are non-ferrous alloys with excellent electrical and thermal conductivity but have relatively lower mechanical properties than iron alloys. Stainless steel(STS), an iron alloy, is a high-strength industrial material due to its excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance compared to non-ferrous Al and Cu. In this research combined Al, Cu, and STS to fabricate as a functionally graded material (FGM) through a powder metallurgical process. The produced FGM exhibited lightweight and excellent surface hardness compared to copper and iron alloys and also showed higher thermal conductivity than single Al and STS materials.

  • This paper addresses a method which can be used for analyzing thermal stresses of a functionally graded material(FGM) using semi-analytical approach. FGM is a nonhomogeneous material whose composition is changed continuously from a metal surface to a ceramic surface. An infinite one dimensional FGM plate is considered. The temperature distribution in the FGM is obtained by approximate Green's function solution. To expedite the convergence of the solutions, alternative Green's function solution is derived and shows good agreement with results from finite difference method. Thermal stresses are calculated using temperature distribution of the plate.

  • In the present paper, thermal buckling characteristics of functionally graded rectangular plates made of porous material that are integrated with surface-bonded piezoelectric actuators subjected to the combined action of thermal load and constant applied actuator voltage are investigated by utilizing a Navier solution method. The uniform temperature rise loading is considered. Thermomechanical material properties of FGM plates are assumed to be temperature independent and supposed to vary through thickness direction of the constituents according to power-law distribution (P-FGM) which is modified to approximate the porous material properties with even and uneven distributions of porosities phases. The governing differential equations of stability for the piezoelectric FGM plate are derived based on higher order shear deformation plate theory. Influences of several important parameters on the critical thermal buckling temperature are investigated and discussed in detail.
