  • In spite of excellent thermomechanical performance the majority of aromatic polyimides are so poor in processability due to their high backbone rigidity that their applications are greatly limited. The introduction of long side chains not only enhances their processiblity but also makes useful contribution to discovering new application fields. In this article, a variety of novel aromatic polyimides with flexible side chains were prepared either from new dimines or new dianhydrides to measure the influence of the side chains on structure and properties of the polymers and their new applications as liquid crystal alignment layers, photosensitive polymers, alternating multilayer nano-films and photoluminescent materials are discussed.

  • Two series of new green phosphorescent polymers bearing a bis(2-phenyl-pyridine)iridium(III)(dibenzoylmethane) [$(ppy)_2Irdbm$] complex were designed and synthesized. Poly-carbazole (PCbz) derivative or polyfluorene with pendant carbazole groups (PFCbz) were employed as host polymers for the iridium complex. The iridium complex monomer was copolymerized with the host monomers using varying monomer ratios via a Yamamoto coupling reaction. Efficient energy transfer from host to dopant unit was observed by increasing the ratio of the iridium guest in the copolymers. Electroluminescent devices with the configuration ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/BmPyPB/LiF/Al were fabricated and characterized. The phosphorescent polymers composed of the iridium complex guest and polyfluorene with carbazole pendants as a host performed better than the polymers composed of the same guest and the main chain polycarbazole host. A maximum external quantum efficiency of 0.73%, a luminous efficiency of 1.21 cd/A, and a maximum luminance of 372 $cd/m^2$ were obtained from a device fabricated using one of the synthesized copolymers.

  • Poly (ethylene 2, 6-naphthalate) (PEN) has been used for a high performance engineering plastics such as fiber, film, and packaging, because of excellent physical properties and outstanding gas barrier characteristics [1-2]. However, the application of PEN is limited because PEN exhibits a relatively high melt viscosity. Recently, many researches for organic/inorganic composites by applying nano-particles to the polymer matrix have been carried out [3], and the nano-particles exhibited greatly improved mechanical and rheological properties [4]. • Ternary blend fibers (TBFs) based on melt blends of PEN, PET, and TLCP were prepared by melt blending and spinning to achieve high performance fibers. The reinforcement effect and the TLCP fibrillar structure resulted in the improvement of mechanical properties for TBFs. Molecular orientation was an important factor in determining the tensile strength and modulus of TBFs. Another part of this research is silica nano-particle filled PEN composites were melt-blended to improve mechanical and physicalproperties, and processability. The tensile modulus and strength were improved adding silica nano-particles to the PEN. The decreased melt viscosity by the fumed silica resulted in the improvement of the processability. The fumed silica may act as a nucleating agent in the PEN matrix.

  • Processable conducting polyaniline derivative with free amine functional groups was successfully synthesized from the monomer o-phenylenediamine in aqueous hydrochloric acid medium using ammonium persulfate as an oxidative initiator. The synthesized poly(o-phenylenediamine) (PoPD) in critical condition was found to be completely soluble in common organic solvents like dimethyl sulfoxide, N,N-dimethyl formamide etc. From the intrinsic viscosity measurement, the optimum condition for the polymerization was established. The polymer was characterized by ultraviolet visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ($^1HNMR$) and thermogravimetric (TGA) analyses. The weight average molecular weights of the synthesized polymers were determined by the dynamic light scattering (DLS) method. From the spectroscopic analysis the structure was found to resemble that of polyaniline derivative with free amine functional groups attached to ortho/meta position in the phenyl ring. However, very little ladder unit was also present with in the polymer chain. The moderate thermal stability of the synthesized polymer could be found from the TGA analysis. The average DC conductivity of $2.8{\times}10^{-4}S/cm$ was observed for the synthesized polymer pellet after doping with hydrochloric acid.

  • Microporous polypropylene hollow fiber membrane was fabricated from isotactic polypropylene-soybean oil system by melt spinning process. Addition of nucleating agent accelerated the crystallization rate and elevated the crystallization temperature. Nucleating agent increased the number of nuclei and spherulites, which offered more inter-spherulitic amorphous sites for stretching. Benzoic acid, adipic acid, and dibenzylidene sorbitol were selected as nucleating agents, and their characteristics and effects were investigated by thermal and optical analyses. Spherulite growth and micropore formation characteristics were correlated with the kind of nucleating agent. Benzoic acid and adipic acid showed the remarkable nucleating effect, while dibenzylidene sorbitol was less effective than those. Nucleating agents also helped the sample have uniform microporous structure. Increase of nucleating agent composition enhanced the nucleation effect to some extent. Nucleating agents played very important roles in enhancing the membrane porosity and water flux.

  • A series of new dielectric polymers with phenyl, epoxy, and carboxylicacid functional groups was prepared via free-radical polymerization. The effect of such dielectric polymers with various functional groups on the performance of OTFT was investigated. The nonpolar groups of terpolymer made the surface of the dielectric layer more hydrophobic and improved the crystal growth of pentacene on the gate insulator, resulting in higher mobility. By controlling the functional group, the electric characteristics of OTFT performance was varied, with $0.00017-0.15\;cm^2/V{\cdot}s$ mobility.

  • Generally, The protone exchange membrane (PEM) contains cationic exchange groups such as SO3$\^$-/ group. The poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSSA) and its copolymers are widely studied because of easily synthetic method and higher conductivities. However, PSSA is not used individually because of poor physical properties such as brittleness and relatively lower Tg. So some researchers are concerned engineering plastics (EP) such as polyimides, polysulfone, polyketones, and poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (MPPO) etc. (omitted)

  • Biomimetic terpene sensors which have high sensitivity and stability have been fabricated using moleculary imprinted polymer (MIP) technology. Since it is impossible to make a resistive type sensor due to the high resistance of MIP, we improved the sensor by adding conductive polymers. We investigated the sensitivity of resistive type sensors with nano particles depending on the amount of conductive polymers. The MIP membrane contained the methacrylic acid as functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross linker, which formed specific cavities originated by the target terpene molecules. The mixture of MIP and the conductive polymer was coated on the patterns of interdigit electrodes on the alumina substrate. The fabricated sensors showed their highest specific sensitivities exposed to 500 ppm target gases : limonene 0.055 at 40% of amount of conductive polymers and geraniol $5.84{\times}10^{-4}$ at 20% of amount of conductive polymers. In conclusion, we found that the terpene sensors are affected by the target molecules, functional monomers and the conductive polymers.

  • Due to the potential application to ultra-high strength fibers and excellent properties such as high mechanical properties, excellent thermal endurance and chemical stability, thermotropic liquid crystal polymers (TLCPS) are attractive in recent years [1, 2]. Furthermore, the melt blends of TLCPS and conventional thermoplastics have been extensively investigated because of their easy processing and high performance [3-6]. Since high performance polymers generally has high melt viscosity, introduction of the relatively low viscosity components may be one of the more effective techniques to improve processability through the decrement of melt viscosity in melt processing.
