Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been widely accepted and used as the enhancer for polymer nano-composites due to their remarkable mechanical properties. Understandably, the CNT fiber-polymer matrix interface plays a major role in determining the properties of the CNT-polymer nano-composites. Here, using the LCAODFT Lab tool available on the EDISON Nano-Physics site, we performed first-principles density-functional theory calculations to determine the atomic configurations and binding energies of the CNTs in contact with polymers. For the polymer matrixes, we chose poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN), which is one of the most well-known polymer matrixes for the carbon nanofiber nanocomposites. Different chiralities and diameters of pristine CNTs were considered, and several PAN-CNT configurations were prepared based on the atomistic positions and directions of cyano group in PAN. The most favorable configuration of PAN was obtained when the PAN bound parallel to the surface of CNT. Our finding indicates the binding configurations are determined by the direction of the cyano group dominantly rather than the atomistic position of PAN, or the symmetry of CNTs. The result of increasing the length of CNT diameter suggests that PAN is inclinable to align evenly on the surface of relatively large size of CNT with the configuration parallel to the surface. These results obtained in this study will provide the starting point for the design of improved PAN-CNT composites for the next-generation ultra-strong and ultra-light carbon nanofibers.
Conducting polymers (CPs) are widely used as matrixes for the entrapment of enzymes in analytical chemistry and biosensing devices. However, enzyme-catalyzed polymerization of CPs is rarely used for immunosensing due to the difficulties involved in the quantitative analysis of colloidal CPs in solution phase. In this study, an enzyme-amplified electrocatalytic immunosensor employing a CP as a redox marker has been developed. A polyanionic polymer matrix, $\alpha$-amino-$\omega$-thiol terminated poly(acrylic acid), was employed for precipitation of CP. The acrylic acid group acts as a polyanionic template. The thiol terminus of the polymer was used to produce self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au electrodes and the amine terminus was employed for immobilization of biomolecules. In an enzymeamplified sandwich type immunosensor, the polyaniline (PANI) produced enzymatically is attracted by the electrostatic force of the matrix polymer. The precipitated PANI was characterized by electrochemical methods.

Mechanical system dynamics plays an important role in the area of computational structural biology. Elastic network models (ENMs) for macromolecules (e.g., polymers, proteins, and nucleic acids such as DNA and RNA) have been developed to understand the relationship between their structure and biological function. For example. a protein, which is basically a folded polypeptide chain, can be simply modeled as a mass-spring system from the mechanical viewpoint. Since the conformational flexibility of a protein is dominantly subject to its chemical bond interactions (e.g., covalent bonds, salt bridges, and hydrogen bonds), these constraints can be modeled as linear spring connections between spatially proximal representatives in a variety of coarse-grained ENMs. Coarse-graining approaches enable one to simulate harmonic and anharmonic motions of large macromolecules in a PC, while all-atom based molecular dynamics (MD) simulation has been conventionally performed with an aid of supercomputer. A harmonic analysis of a macroscopic mechanical system, called normal mode analysis, has been adopted to analyze thermal fluctuations of a microscopic biological system around its equilibrium state. Furthermore, a structure-based system optimization, called elastic network interpolation, has been developed to predict nonlinear transition (or folding) pathways between two different functional states of a same macromolecule. The good agreement of simulation and experiment allows the employment of coarse-grained ENMs as a versatile tool for the study of macromolecular dynamics.
The gelation for di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)-plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) was studied by measuring time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and a flow of the solutions in test tube. It was found that for the gelation there were three regimes. At Regime I, the solution rapidly changed to a gel, and the SAXS intensity showed a peak and the peak intensity increased, keeping the peak angle constant. Applying the SAXS intensity to the kinetic analysis of the liquid-liquid phase separation, it was revealed that the spinodal decomposition proceeded to develop a periodic length of 29.9 nanometer in size, a hydrogen-bonding-type association in polymer rich phase followed, and then it induced fast gelation rate. At Regime II, the gelation slowly occurred and the SAXS intensity was not observed, suggesting that a homogeneous gel network was formed by a hydrogen-bonding. At regime III, the solution was a homogeneous sol.
The phenomena of high-voltage polarization and conductivity in oriented vinylidenefluoride and tetrafluoroethylene copolymer films have been investigated. It was shown that under certain electric fields, injection of carriers from the material of electrodes appears The barrier for holes injection in the copolymer was found to be lower than that for electrons. It results in more effective screening of the external field near the anode than near cathode. Electrones, ejected from cathode, creating negative charge by trapping on the surface. It is shown that the electrons injected from cathodes create a negative homocharge on the copolymer surface and then become captured on the surface shallow traps. Their nature has been studied by the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was shown that these traps may consist of chemical defects in the form of new functional groups formed by reactions of surface macromolecules with sputtered atoms of aluminum. The asymmetric shape of hysteresis curves was explained by the difference in mobility of injected holes and electrons. These factors caused appearance of "non-closed" hysteresis curves for fluorine-containing polymer ferroelectrics. Hysteresis phenomena observed at low electric fields (below coercive ones) are to associate with the behavior of the domains localized in the ordered regions formed during secondary crystallization of copolymers.
Dendrimers represent a new class of synthetic macromoleculcs characterized by a regularly branched treelike structure. Multiple branching yields a large number of chain ends that distinguish dendrimers from conventional star-like polymers and microgels. The azobenzene dendrimer is one of the dendrimeric macromolecules that include the azo-group exhibiting a photochromic character. Due to the presence of the charge transfer element of the azo-group and its rod-shaped structure, these compounds are expected to have potential interest in electronics and photoelectronics, especially in nonlinear optics. In the present paper, we give pressure stimulation to organic thin films and detect the induced displacement current. Functional photoisometrization organic molecular the photo-stimulus to organic monomolecular L films and LB films of dendrimer and 8A5H were performed. The 8A5H organic monolayer in case of pressure stimulus occurred that positive course but in case of the photo-stimulus compared positive and negative. It is assumed that generation forms of displacement current were measured when photo-stimulus for impression.
Melanoidins, as brown colored polymers, are formed through the diversified reaction systems of Maillard type and other reactions. Melanoidins are important components in relation to food quality and also are known to have antioxidative, mutagenic and antimutagenic activities. Since these aspects have been extensively reviwed elsewhere, only the recent studies regarding to their antioxidative and antimutagenic activities are discussed in this review. Even though their mechanisms are not clearly identified, melanoidins or specific fractions isolated from their mixtures have shown varied antioxidative activities depending on the reaction systems and reaction conditions. Those activities presumely are derived from the complex functional properties of hydrogen / electron donors and metal chelating power, which are originated from their reductone structure and others. It is considered that pyrolysate and other mutagens are formed by the given conditions in some cases during browning reaction, whereas melanoidins and their fractions have antimutagenic effects on chemical and other mutagens. There are positive correlationship among the color intensity, antioxidative activity and antimutagenicity of melanoidins or their fractions. These suggest that the antimutagenicity of melanoidins could be attributed to their antioxidative properties, however, it might also be due to other factors, because the relevant responses for antimutagenicity are very complicate and not clear. Accordingly, further studies are required to determine the actual acitivities and mechanisms involved in antioxidation and (anti)mutagenicity of melanoidins by reaction systems / conditions and by the isolated fractions. And also, additional studies are needed to evaluate the applications of melanoidins and their relevant effects to food and human health.
In this study, several anion exchange membranes were successfully prepared by radiation grafting of vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) monomer onto a polyethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) film and subsequent quaternarization with diamins such as 1,4-diazbicyclo[2,2,2]octane, N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-1,3-diaminopropane, N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-1,6-diaminohexane, and trimethylamine. The anion exchange capacities of the prepared membranes were determined by using acid-base titration method. The cross-sectional morphology of the membranes was studied by using SEM instrument. The cross-sectional distribution patterns of the grafted polymers with anion exchange functional groups were also studied by EDX analysis.
The purpose of this paper is to review the state of laser processing technology using metal powders. In recent years, a series of research and development efforts have been undertaken worldwide to develop laser processing technologies to fabricate metal-based parts. Layered manufacturing by the laser melting process is gaining ground for use in manufacturing rapid prototypes (RP), tools (RT) and functional end products. Selective laser sintering / melting (SLS/SLM) is one of the most rapidly growing rapid prototyping techniques. This is mainly due to the processes's suitability for almost any materials, including polymers, metals, ceramics and many types of composites. The interaction between the laser beam and the powder material used in the laser melting process is one of the dominant phenomena defining feasibility and quality. In the case of SLS, the powder is not fully melted during laser scanning, therefore the SLS-processed parts are not fully dense and have relatively low strength. To overcome this disadvantage, SLM and laser cladding (LC) processes have been used to enable full melting of the powder. Further studies on the laser processing technology will be continued due to the many potential applications that the technology offers.
Candida albicans is a major fungal pathogen in humans. In our previous study, we reported that an ethanol extract from Aucklandia lappa weakens C. albicans cell wall by inhibiting synthesis or assembly of both (1,3)-β-D-glucan polymers and chitin. In the current study, we found that the extract is involved in permeabilization of C. albicans cell membranes. While uptake of ethidium bromide (EtBr) was 3.0% in control cells, it increased to 7.4% for 30 min in the presence of the A. lappa ethanol extract at its minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC), 0.78 mg/ml, compared to uptake by heat-killed cells. Besides, leakage of DNA and proteins was observed in A. lappa-treated C. albicans cells. The increased uptake of EtBr and leakage of cellular materials suggest that A. lappa ethanol extract induced functional changes in C. albicans cell membranes. Incorporation of diphenylhexatriene (DPH) into membranes in the A. lappa-treated C. albicans cells at its MIC decreased to 84.8%, after 60 min of incubation, compared with that of the controls, indicate that there was a change in membrane dynamics. Moreover, the anticandidal effect of the A. lappa ethanol extract was enhanced at a growth temperature of 40℃ compared to that at 35℃. The above data suggest that the antifungal activity of the A. lappa ethanol extract against C. albicans is associated with synergistic action of membrane permeabilization due to changes in membrane dynamics and cell wall damage caused by reduced formation of (1,3)-β-D-glucan and chitin.
