  • The prediction of driving stresses in piles is necessary for optimum selection of driving hammers, better design of precast piles, enact assessment of drivabilities and complete description of piling specifications. However, the existing pile-driving formulas based on the theory of Newtonian impact have some defects and shortcomings; the numerical method by the wave equation analysis using electronic computer usually Involves various uncertainties and limitations which can yield erroneous outcomes because it employs soil constants of which the nature is unknown as essential parameters and ignores the effect of residual stresses set up in the pile .after each hammer blow; and the electronic measuring technique needs extra time and expense. The method developed herein is presented for the purpose of giving field engineers a reliable and convenient analytical procedure for the prediction of driving stresses along the full length of pile using the most effetive parameters without resort to electronic computer. This method is based on the fundamental mechanics of stress waves in elastic rods and takes into account the effect of residual stresses induced by reversed friction in piles.

  • There are critical drawbacks in fabricating MMIC transversal filters because the length of the conventional transversal filter structure is much longer than the width. In order to solve this structural problem, a transversal filter using multiple-coupled-line directional couplers which can achieve tight coupling is proposed. The length of the proposed transversal filter can be made short using multiple-coupled-line couplers so that the structure of the proposed filter is applicable to MMIC technology. Because of the dielectric and conductor losses, the excited signal at the input port becomes smaller when it progresses through each directional coupler. Therefore, the strength of the coupled signals at the latter directional couplers becomes smaller than the designed one and this, in turn, gives rise to performance aggravation. A modified coupling coefficient formula to prevent frequency characteristic degradation is introduced. The proposed filter structure and the design method are verified by the calculated result and 3D full-wave analysis.

  • This paper proposes a compact dual-band 3-way power divider that helps lowering the weight of a transceiver for the L-band or multi-purpose satellite communication. Instead of the multi stages or tapering which ends up with loss accumulation and size-growth, the non-linear dispersive phases from the metamaterial CRLH(composite right and left-handed) properties are obtained by the accurate formulation and implemented by the short transmission line segments. Firstly, the CRLH dual-band two-way unequal power divider and equal power divider are separately designed. And then, the input of the two-way equal power divider is plugged in the output port of the unequal one, and the entire geometry is slightly adjusted for the desirable performance. The circuit analysis and full-wave simulation are used to predict the frequency responses and validated by the measurement of the prototype. Besides, the size-reduction effect is addressed.

  • The ultimate bending moment of ships is one of the principle strength considered in ship design. Several methods have been proposed to predict the ultimate bending moment and its major part is, in general, predicting the ultimate compressive strength of stiffened panels. In this paper, made is the review on the methods and formulae of predicting the ultimate compressive strength and they are applied to predicting the ultimate bending moment. Safely levels of three bulk carriers have been derived evaluated for two loading conditions, stray, light ship condition and full load condition, and wave bending by Classification Society Rule(ABS, DnV and Lloyd Rule). The present reliability analysis problem is strictly non-linear and the Advanced First-Order Reliability Method has been used. From the results of parametric studies, the methods of predicting the ultimate compressive strength of stiffened panels are compared from the view point of their applicability to the reliability assessment of ships structures. The paper ends wish a brief discussion drawn from the parametric studies and the extension of the study is described.

  • The quantitative assessment of the seismic collapse risk of a structure requires the usage of an optimal intensity measure (IM) which can adequately characterise the severity of the ground motion. Research suggests that the average spectral acceleration ($Sa_{avg}$) may be an efficient and sufficient alternate IM as compared to the more traditional first mode spectral acceleration, $Sa(T_1)$, particularly during seismic collapse risk estimation. This study primarily presents a comparative evaluation of the sufficiency of the average spectral acceleration with respect to ground motion duration, and secondarily assesses the impact of ground motion duration on collapse risk estimation. By assembling a suite of 100 historical ground motions, incremental dynamic analysis of 60 different inelastic single-degree-of-freedom (SDF) oscillators with varying periods and ductility capacities were analysed, and collapse risk estimates obtained. Linear regression models are used to comparatively quantify the sufficiency of $Sa_{avg}$ and $Sa(T_1)$ using four significant duration metrics. Results suggests that an improved sufficiency may exist for $Sa_{avg}$ when the period of the SDF system increases, particularly beyond 0.5, as compare to $Sa(T_1)$. In reference to the ground motion duration measures, results indicated that the sufficiency of $Sa_{avg}$ is more sensitive to significant duration definitions that consider almost the full wave train of an accelerogram ($SD_{a5-95}$ and $SD_{v5-95}$). In order to obtain a reduced variability of the collapse risk estimate, the 5-95% significant duration metric defined using the Arias integral ($SD_{a5-95}$) should be used for seismic collapse risk estimation in conjunction with $Sa_{avg}$.

  • A doppler log is the typical device which can measure the ship's speed over the ground directly, by means of doppler effect of the underwater ultrasonic wave, which involves the error due to the sea bottom inclination, the trim and the incorrect transducer installation etc. The present doppler log adopts a single transducer, faced in the direction of themain beam, and therefore it is unable to correct the beam direction to eliminate the above mentioned error. Moreover, the frequencyis also limitted in a comparatively high range for getting a sharp beam with single transducer, and the speed over the ground can not be detectable at the deep sea, for an instance, over 200 meters. This paper describes a theoretical consideration for the doppler log error and an analysis by a computer on the observed speed data by a full size model ship. The result is verified that the most of doppler log error is caused by the ultrasonic beam angle of transducer. To eliminate the doppler log error due to the incorrect transducer installation and also to sharpen the beam for lower frequency range to expand measurable sea depth, this paper proposes a method of controlling the directivity adopting a linear transducer array and of controlling the directivity by the control of exciting current, and investigates by the computer simulation and make experiment with magnetostrictive ferrite transducer of 28, 50 and 75KHz. The experimental results are shown well coincide with the measured ones, and they are revealed that in case where the transducer interval is greater than 1 wavelength, the effective control of the beam direction is hardly performed with keeping adequate beam width and side lobe level. It is concluded that 6-elements array with inter element space of a half wavelength can make comparatively sharp beam and low side lobe level. The results obtained here will contribute very much to the improvement of the performance of doppler log.

  • This study analyzed the factors associated with residential mobility based on the data from the 11th to the 19th wave of the Korean Labor & Income Panel Study (KLIPS). After grouping low-income households within the first to the fourth income bracket into households that exhibited no income bracket change and those with income bracket changes during the research period, this study examined the effects of the income situation of each group on residential mobility. According to the results of the analysis, in the group of households that showed no low-income bracket change, significant effects were found only in the age of the head of the household, housing cost, and rental deposit (Jeonse) and monthly rental of the household. In the group of households that showed low-income bracket changes, findings were generally in line with those of the whole household, where total income and the number of full-time employees in the household were the same as those of the whole household, indicating that it would be necessary to improve the employment stability of low-income households. Based on the findings of this study, housing inequality is intensifying within low-income households, and, thus, housing policies, based on continuing surveys, must be implemented to enhance income opportunities and stabilize the housing needs of low-income households.

  • It is known that the Fe-Al transition metal compounds have a lot of disagreement about structural stability and magnetism. In this study, the correlation between magnetism and atomic structure of ordered $B_2$, $L1_2$, and $D0_3$ structured Fe-Al compounds has been investigated using the all-electron full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method based on the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). We found that considered all the structures were calculated to be stabilized in a ferromagnetic state. The calculated spin magnetic moments of the Fe atoms for B2 and $L1_2$ structures were 0.771 and 2.373 ${\mu}_B$, respectively, and that of Fe(I) and Fe(II) in $D0_3$ structure calculated to be 2.409 ${\mu}_B$, 1.911 ${\mu}_B$, respectively. In order to investigate structural stability between $L1_2$ and $D0_3$ structures, we performed the formation enthalpy calculations. As a result, the $D0_3$ structure is found to be more favorable than $L1_2 one by energy difference 16 meV/atom, which is well consistent with the experimental observation. We understood about structural stability and magnetism for Fe-Al compounds in terms of analysis of their atomic and electronic structures.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of social activities on healthy life expectancy (HLE) by gender difference. HLE implies an estimate of how long an individual can expect to live in full health or without disease and/or disability. Morbidity, mortality, and functional health status usually have been known as key variables. Many researchers have tried to investigate factors affecting HLE in countries level by performing comparative analyses. In micro level, there have been some studies about social factors affecting HLE in individual level. However, few studies are found focusing on the relationship between HLE and social activities. This study anlayzes 4,029 over 65 years of age from the first wave (2006) to the seventh wave (2018) of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA), which is a national panel data collected by Korea Employment Information Service. The data has been collected as a part of social and economic policies planning for Korean government. HLE was measured by life period without disease or disability. One of findings is that male older adults (76.9 yrs) show higher HLE in comparing to female group (75.3 yrs). Female group appeared to be more likely to have higher incidence rate and disorders. Another finding indicates that age, number of chronic diseases, and subjective health status affect HLE of both groups. Finally, regarding social activities, religion affiliated activities appear to significantly affect HLE of both groups. In case of male older adults, alumni or hometown gathering also appeared another activities affecting HLE. This study indicates that the effect of social activities types on HLE among older adults appears differently by gender. Further, unlikely of longer life expectancy among female older adults as known, HLE shows a reverse estimate, longer healthy life expectancy among male older adults. This finding may imply that later life of female older adults shows lower quality of life in comparing to that of male group, even if female life expectancy has been higher. This study encourages to develop more social activity programs for older adults in community level. Specifically, more attention is required to planning for programs targeting female older adults.

  • Ballasted track has been used as track system for more than 100 years. Ballasted track has advantages of low construction cost, flexible maintenance, low noise and vibration, and so on. However, ballasted track leads to continuous settlement which causes maintenance. Recently, increase in speed, traffic volume, and weight of train requires more frequent maintenance. Fouling, well-known phenomenon of accumulation of fine materials due to intrusion of subgrade and breakage of ballast materials, expedites the settlement (i.e., irregular settlement) of track. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) can be one of non-destructive tools that can evaluate fouling level of ballast. In this paper, a gain function based on the attenuation characteristics of ballast material is suggested in conjunction with Hilbert transform. Lab box tests and full-scale tests indicate that the suggested method reasonably classifies clean, fouled layers, and subgrade. However, additional study to eliminate effect of sleeper and to include the scattering features of the electromagnetic wave in ballast voids should be required in order to enhance the accuracy.
