Wind-induced vibrations of mast arms of cantilever traffic signal structures can lead to fatigue failure. Two such structures were instrumented each with a sonic anemometer and a camera that records the motions of the tip of the arm. It was observed throughout this experiment that large amplitude vertical vibrations of mast arms with signals with backplates occur for the most part at low wind speed ranges, between 2 to 7 m/s, and as the wind speed increases the amplitude of the vertical vibrations decreases. The results of these experiments contradict the generally accepted belief that vortex shedding does not cause significant vibrations of mast arms that could lead to fatigue failure, which have been attributed to galloping in the past. Two damping devices were tested with mixed results.
Full-scale and 1:15 scale fluid model experiments of roof ballast pavers are employed to optimize paver geometry and study wind loading and performance of roof ballast pavers. Wind pressures above and beneath pavers are conducted for buildings of different heights and in different flow conditions. The effects of the side hole size and the underneath rib height under the wind loading on pavers and the effects of roof parapet height as well as flow conditions on the performance of pavers are studied. Incorporation of wind tunnel experimental results into code statements is also provided.
This paper applies the FE analysis procedure, developed in the Part I of the companion article, to the three-dimensional rubber pad deformation during rubber-pad forming process. Effects of different algorithms corresponding to incompressibility constraint and time integration methods on numerical solution responses are investigated. Laboratory scale experiments support the validity of the developed FE procedure an demonstrate the accuracy of the numerical models. Full scale model responses are also predicted using the reasonable method and parameters obtained in laboratory modeling.
The research on the development of the fault monitoring system for the thermal reduction reactor has been performed preliminarily in order to support the successful operation of the thermal reduction reactor. The final task of the development of the fault monitoring system is to assure the integrity of the thermal$_3$ reduction reactor by the acoustic emission (AE) method. The objectives of this paper are to identify and characterize the fault-induced signals for the discrimination of the various AE signals acquired during the reactor operation. The AE data acquisition and analysis system was constructed and applied to the fault monitoring of the small- scale reduction reactor, Through the series of experiments, the various signals such as background noise, operating signals, and fault-induced signals were measured and their characteristics were identified, which will be used in the signal discrimination for further application to full-scale thermal reduction reactor.
In this study, performance level evaluation tests have been actually performed on laminated rubber seismic isolation bearings (LRB) made in Korea. To provide basic data for setting up fabrication criteria and performance evaluation criteria three real scale LRB were tested and the test results were analysised. Accordingly, a large capacity test device has been designed and manufactured to implement the tests. The device selected for evaluation is a circular LRB actually applied in bridges. Evaluation tests were conducted using full-scale LRB with diameter of 851mm in the rubber part and total height of 215mm of which the effective horizontal stiffness and equivalent damping ratio have been measured during the experiments.
There are several types of defects of SMDs mounted on PCB, that is, missing components, misalignment, wrong parts and poor solder joints. This research study mainly focuses on measuring of deviation of SMD leads using the partial image of component, not using the full image. This processing based on the partial image has the advantage of the reduction in calculation time compared to the full image. Since position of lead is calculated with respect of the reduction in calculation time compared to the full image. Since position of lead is calculated with respect to pad, the accuracy of the system is not dependent on percise positioning stage. The grabbed image of gray scale is converted into binary format using a cutomatic threshold. After small fragments in the image is removed by a series of morphology operations such as opening and closing, the centroids of PCB pads and SMD leads is obtained together with labeling of blobs. Translational shift and rotationial angle of SMD are succedingly estimated using above information and chip data. The expression that can calculate the maximum deviation of leads with respect to PCB pads has been derived, and inferior mounting of SMD is judged by a given criterion. Some experiments have been executed to verify this measuring scheme.
For scaling of the gradient of misfit function, we develop a new pseudo-Hessian matrix constructed by combining amplitude field and pseudo-Hessian matrix. Since pseudo- Hessian matrix neglects the calculation of the zero-lag auto-correlation of impulse responses in the approximate Hessian matrix, the pseudo-Hessian matrix has a limitation to scale the gradient of misfit function compared to the approximate Hessian matrix. To validate the new pseudo- Hessian matrix, we perform frequency-domain elastic full waveform inversion using this Hessian matrix. By synthetic experiments, we show that the new pseudo-Hessian matrix can give better convergence to the true model than the old one does. Furthermore, since the amplitude fields are intrinsically obtained in forward modeling procedure, we do not have to pay any extra cost to compute the new pseudo-Hessian. We think that the new pseudo-Hessian matrix can be used as an alternative of the approximate Hessian matrix of the Gauss-Newton method.
The purpose of this study is to identify the flow resistance of the bottom pair trawl nets. The bottom pair trawl nets being used in fishing vessel (100G/T, 550ps) was selected as a full-scale net, and 1/10, 1/25 and 1/50 of the model nets were made. Converted into the full-scale net by Tauti's modeling rule and Kim's modeling rule, when resistance coefficient k of each net was calculated by substituting into above equation for flow resistance R and wall area of nets S values of each net ${\upsilon}$. Because resistant coefficient k decreases exponentially according as flow velocity ${\upsilon}$ increases to make $k=c{\upsilon}^{-m}$, c and m values of each net were compared. As a result, as the model was smaller, c and m values was smaller in the two rule into standard of 1/10 model value, decrease degree of 1/25 model was almost same in the two rule, decrease degree of 1/50 model was very big in Tauti's modeling rule. Therefore, in the result of experiment, because average of c and m values for similarly 1/10 and 1/25 model were given $c=4.9(kgf{\cdot}s^2/m^4)$ and m=0.45, R (kgf) of bottom pair trawl net could show $R=4.9S{\upsilon}^{1.55}$ using these values. As in the order of cod-end, wing and bag part for 1/25 and 1/50 model net were removed in turn, measured flow resistance of each, converted into the full-scale, total resistance of the net and the resistance of each part net were calculated. The resistance ratio of each part for total net was not same in 1/25 and 1/50 model each other, but average of two nets was perfectly same area ratio of each part as the wing, bag and cod-end part was 43%, 45% and 12%. However, the resistance of each part divided area of the part, calculated the resistance of per unit area, wing and bag part were not big difference each other, while the resistance of cod-end part was very large.
There has been considerable research in recent times in light-timber med structures in fires. These structures have included horizontal (floor-like) panels in bending and walls under eccentric and approximately concentric vertical loading. It has been shown that compression properties are the most dominant mechanical properties in affecting structural response of these structures in fire. Compression properties have been obtained by various means as functions of one variable only, temperature. It has always been expected that compression properties would be significantly affected by moisture and stress, as well. However, these variables have been largely ignored to simplify the complex problem of predicting the response of light-timber framed structures in fire. Full-scale experiments on both the panels and walls have demonstrated the high level of significance of moisture and stress for a limited range of conditions. Described in this paper is an overview of these conditions and experiments undertaken to obtain compression properties as a functions of moisture, stress and temperature. The experiments limited temperatures to $20{\sim}100^{\circ}C$. At higher temperatures moisture vaporizes and moisture and stress are less significant. Described also is a creep model for wood at high temperatures.
