There exists a clear need to monitor the performance of civil structures over their operational lives. Current commercial monitoring systems suffer from various technological and economic limitations that prevent their widespread adoption. The wires used to route measurements from system sensors to the centralized data server represent one of the greatest limitations since they are physically vulnerable and expensive from an installation and maintenance standpoint. In lieu of cables, the introduction of low-cost wireless communications is proposed. The result is the design of a prototype wireless sensing unit that can serve as the fundamental building block of wireless modular monitoring systems (WiMMS). An additional feature of the wireless sensing unit is the incorporation of computational power in the form of state-of-art microcontrollers. The prototype unit is validated with a series of laboratory and field tests. The Alamosa Canyon Bridge is employed to serve as a full-scale benchmark structure to validate the performance of the wireless sensing unit in the field. A traditional cable-based monitoring system is installed in parallel with the wireless sensing units for performance comparison.
Although performance based assessment procedures are mainly developed for reinforced concrete and steel buildings, URM (Unreinforced Masonry) buildings occupy significant portion of buildings in earthquake prone areas of the world as well as in IRAN. Variability of material properties, non-engineered nature of the construction and difficulties in structural analysis of masonry walls make analysis of URM buildings challenging. Despite sophisticated finite element models satisfy the modeling requirements, extensive experimental data for definition of material behavior and high computational resources are needed. Recently, nonlinear equivalent frame models which are developed assigning lumped plastic hinges to isotropic and homogenous equivalent frame elements are used for nonlinear modeling of URM buildings. The equivalent frame models are not novel for the analysis of masonry structures, but the actual potentialities have not yet been completely studied, particularly for non-linear applications. In the present paper an effective tool for the non-linear static analysis of 2D masonry walls is presented. The work presented in this study is about performance assessment of unreinforced brick masonry buildings through nonlinear equivalent frame modeling technique. Reliability of the proposed models is tested with a reversed cyclic experiment conducted on a full scale, two-story URM building at the University of Pavia. The pushover curves were found to provide good agreement with the experimental backbone curves. Furthermore, the results of analysis show that EFM (Equivalent Frame Model) with Dolce RO (rigid offset zone) and shell element have good agreement with finite element software and experimental results.
Recently polymer insulators are being used for outdoor high voltage applications. Polymer insulators have significant advantages over porcelain and glass insulators. With the gradual improvement of their design and material, their reliability has also increased. It is however difficult to establish how they will perform after several years of service. Aging of the insulator weathershed may lead to damages such as excessive chalking and crazing, erosion and tracking which affect the insulator performance. In service insulator are subjected to aging stresses such as humidity, pollution and electrical field which act singly or in combination. There have been numerous accelerated laboratory tests developed with the intention of evaluating suitability of polymeric materials. Some of these are strictly material tests, where as, others evaluate full scale devices. Service experience plays a key role in the utility selection of polymer insulator, but is time consuming, and may not always be available. Hence there is a need for a meaningful and reliable accelerated aging test for polymer insulator. This paper describes multi-stress aging test for reliability of polymer insulator This paper presents the rule of multi-stress aging test and test chamber for polymer insulator in korea electrotechnology research institute.
A wireless sensing system is designed for application to structural monitoring and damage detection applications. Embedded in the wireless monitoring module is a two-tier prediction model, the auto-regressive (AR) and the autoregressive model with exogenous inputs (ARX), used to obtain damage sensitive features of a structure. To validate the performance of the proposed wireless monitoring and damage detection system, two near full scale single-story RC-frames, with and without brick wall system, are instrumented with the wireless monitoring system for real time damage detection during shaking table tests. White noise and seismic ground motion records are applied to the base of the structure using a shaking table. Pattern classification methods are then adopted to classify the structure as damaged or undamaged using time series coefficients as entities of a damage-sensitive feature vector. The demonstration of the damage detection methodology is shown to be capable of identifying damage using a wireless structural monitoring system. The accuracy and sensitivity of the MEMS-based wireless sensors employed are also verified through comparison to data recorded using a traditional wired monitoring system.
In order to survey the radiation characteristics of pure line noise of unwanted noise from overhead high voltage AC transmission lines, a disk type gap noise generator was manufactured. Disk size which decides capacitance between the noise generator and earth was selected through preliminary indoor experiments and analysis by using surface charge method. The capacitance is one of principal parameters related to the injection of a proper noise current into lines. On the basis of the capacitance obtained from calculation, 5mm of space was given to the gap of the noise generator to be installed o test line and an aluminum disk of 60cm radius was made. The field experiments were performed with the noise generator hung on the Kochang 765 kV full scale test line. As the results, the useful data which can be used to analysis the radiation characteristics of noise from transmission lines were obtained. Those are the directivity of antenna toward the line, lateral profiles, frequency spectra, height pattern and so on.

The use of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) accelerometers in geotechnical instrumentation is relatively new but on the rise. This paper describes a new MEMS-based system for in situ deformation and vibration monitoring. The system has been developed in an effort to combine recent advances in the miniaturization of sensors and electronics with an established wireless infrastructure for on-line geotechnical monitoring. The concept is based on triaxial MEMS accelerometer measurements of static acceleration (angles relative to gravity) and dynamic accelerations. The dynamic acceleration sensitivity range provides signals proportional to vibration during earthquakes or construction activities. This MEMS-based in-place inclinometer system utilizes the measurements to obtain three-dimensional (3D) ground acceleration and permanent deformation profiles up to a depth of one hundred meters. Each sensor array or group of arrays can be connected to a wireless earth station to enable real-time monitoring as well as remote sensor configuration. This paper provides a technical assessment of MEMS-based in-place inclinometer systems for geotechnical instrumentation applications by reviewing the sensor characteristics and providing small- and full-scale laboratory calibration tests. A description and validation of recorded field data from an instrumented unstable slope in California is also presented.
Wall functions have been widely used in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and can save significant computational costs compared to other near-wall flow treatment strategies. However, most of the existing wall functions were based on the asymptotic characteristics of near-wall flow quantities, which are inapplicable in complex and non-equilibrium flows. A modified wall function is thus derived in this study based on flow over a plate at zero-pressure gradient, instead of on the basis of asymptotic formulations. Turbulent kinetic energy generation ($G_P$), dissipation rate (${\varepsilon}$) and shear stress (${\tau}_{\omega}$) are composed together as the near-wall expressions. Performances of the modified wall function combined with the nonlinear realizable k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model are investigated in homogeneous equilibrium atmosphere boundary layer (ABL) and flow around a 6 m cube. The computational results and associated comparisons to available full-scale measurements show a clear improvement over the standard wall function, especially in reproducing the boundary layer flow. It is demonstrated through the two case studies that the modified wall function is indeed adaptive and can yield accurate prediction results, in spite of its simplicity.
Estimations of wind flow over terrain are often needed for applications such as pollutant dispersion, transport safety or wind farm location. Whilst field studies offer very detailed information regarding the wind potential over a small region, the cost of instrumenting a natural fetch alone is prohibitive. Wind tunnels offer one alternative although wind tunnel simulations can suffer from scale effects and high costs as well. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) offers a second alternative which is increasingly seen as a viable one by wind engineers. There are two issues associated with CFD however, that of accuracy of the predictions and set-up and simulation times. This paper aims to address the two issues by demonstrating, by way of an investigation of wind potential for the Askervein Hill, that a good level of accuracy can be obtained with CFD (10% for the speed up ratio) and that it is possible to automate the simulations in order to compute a full wind rose efficiently. The paper shows how a combination of script and session files can be written to drive and automate CFD simulations based on commercial software. It proposes a general methodology for the automation of CFD applied to the computation of wind flow over a region of interest.

This paper illustrates recent advancements relative to a non-conventional propulsion system for boats and is based on two previous papers of the author presented at a conference (see Muscia, 2015a,b). The system does not consider propellers and utilizes the vibration generated by two or more pairs of counter rotating masses. The resultant of the centrifugal forces applies an alternate thrust to the hull that oscillates forward and backward along the longitudinal axis of the boat. The different hydrodynamic drag forces that oppose to the oscillation produce a prevalently forward motion of the vessel. The vibration that causes the motion can be suitably defined to maximize the forward displacement and the efficiency propulsion of the system. This result is obtained by using elliptical gears to rotate the counter rotating masses. The computation of the propulsion efficiency is based on a suitable physical mathematical model. Correlations between numerical experiments on models and possible full scale application are discussed. Some remarks in relation to practical applications and critical issues of the propulsive solution are illustrated. The results have been obtained with reference to a CAD model of a real boat already manufactured whose length is approximately equal to 13 m.

The Gamma Portable Radar Interferometer (GPRI) is a ground-based real aperture radar (RAR) that can acquire images with high spatial and temporal resolution. The GPRI ground-based radar used in this study composes three antennas with a Ku-band frequency of 17.1-17.3 GHz (1.73-1.75 cm of wavelength). It can measure displacement over time with millimeter-scale precision. It is also possible to adjust the observation mode by arranging the transmitting and receiving antennas for various applications: i) obtaining differential interferograms through the application of interferometric techniques, ii) generation of digital elevation models and iii) acquisition of full polarimetric data. We introduced the hardware configuration of the GPRI ground-based radar, image acquisition, and characteristics of the collected radar images. The interferometric phase difference has been evaluated to apply the multi-temporal interferometric SAR application (MT-InSAR) using the first observation campaigns at Pusan National University in Geumjeong-gu, Busan.
