Multispectral Wavelength Selection to Detect 'Fuji' Apple Surface Defects with Pixel-sampling Analysis

  • Purpose: In this study, we focused on the image processing method to determine the external quality of Fuji apples by identifying surface defects such as scabs and bruises. Method: A CCD camera was used to capture filter images with 24 different wavelengths ranging between 530 nm and 1050 nm. Image subtraction and division operations were performed to distinguish the defect area from the normal areas including calyx, stem, and glaring on the apple surface image. All threshold values of the image were examined to reveal the defect area of pretreated filter images. Results: The developed operation methods were [image (720 nm) - image (900 nm)]/image (700 nm) for bruise detection and [image (740 nm) - image (900 nm)]/image (590 nm) for scab detection, which revealed 81% and 90% recognition ratios, respectively. Conclusions: Our results showed several optimal wavelengths and image processing methods to detect Fuji apple surface defects such as bruises and scabs.

A Dimensionless Index for Quantitative Evaluation of Apple Freshness

  • Though the freshness for agricultural products is an important factor related to their quality management, this terminology is being used restrictedly because it is very subjective. In this study, a dimensionless index which had the span of the maximum of 1 through the minimum of 0 was proposed to describe freshness of the product with time-variant quality and was applied to Tsugaru and Fuji apples. First, the compressive properties having the linearity in their change regarding time elapsed after harvest were selected. For Tsugaru apple, bio-yield and rupture forces had high correlation with time while for Fuji, bio-yield and rupture deformations had high correlations. When the slope, or ratio of force to deformation, was considered, the effect of cultivar could be neglected. When the linearly time-variant compressive properties for Tsugaru and Fuji apples were involved in the freshness indices, they described well freshness of apples. Also, the freshness decay constant depicted a characteristic which related to freshness decay rate. Therefore, the freshness index can be utilized to manage the quality during storage and distribution of apples.

사과 품종별 재배면적 변동 요인 분석 (Analysis of Factors Influencing Cultivation Area of Apple Cultivars)

  • This study analyzed factors influencing cultivation area of two major apple cultivars, Fuji and Hongro, applying the panel SUR model to survey data from farms. Characteristics of farms, distribution factors, and weather factors were the independent variables of the model. The analysis indicated that characteristics of farms, distribution factors, and weather factors influence the cultivation area of Hongro and Fuji. The independent variables were also found to have different levels of influence on increase and decrease of the cultivated area. Helping predict changes in cultivation area of Hongro and Fuji, the research results can be used as primary data to support efforts to prevent price fluctuations due to changes in supply.

국내 유통 주요 사과나무 묘목의 바이러스 감염 실태 (Survey on Virus Infection for Commercial Nursery Trees of Major Apple Cultivars in Korea)

  • 국내에서 유통되고 있는 사과나무 묘목의 바이러스 감염 실태를 파악하기 위하여 사과 '홍로'와 '후지' 및 '후지' 아조변이 품종을 구입하여 5종류의 바이러스에 대한 감염 여부를 검정하였다. 그 결과, '홍로' 품종의 접수 부위는 ACLSV, ASPV 및 ASGV에 각각 100%, 81.3% 및 100%의 감염률을 보였고 ApMV와 ASSVd에는 전혀 감염되지 않았다. '홍로' 품종의 대목 부위에 대하여, ACLSV, ASPV 및 ASGV의 감염률은 각각 87.5%, 81.3% 및 100%이었고 ApMV와 ASSVd의 감염률은 각각 12.5% 및 6.3%이었다. '후지' 품종 및 '후지' 아조변이 품종의 접수 부위는 ACLSV, ASPV 및 ASGV에 각각 86.7%, 86.7% 및 100%의 감염률을 보였고 ApMV와 ASSVd에는 전혀 감염되지 않았다. 대목 부위는 ACLSV, ASPV 및 ASGV에 각각 86.7%, 93.3% 및 93.3%의 감염률을 보였고 ApMV와 ASSVd에 대한 감염률은 각각 12.5%와 6.3%이었다.

영상처리(映像處理) 장치(裝置)를 이용(利用)한 사과의 색택(色澤) 판정(判定) (Classification of Apple Coloration Using Image Processing System)

  • The aims of this study were to investigate the feasivility of analyzing a few sorting factors such as size, coloration and defect of apples with a monochrome image processing system and to find apparent properties which could be effectively used for apple sorting. The results are summarized as follows. 1. A computer program was made to analyze the projection area, coloration and defect of an apple with a monochrome image processing system. 2. The algorithm developed to compute the projedtion area of an apple was between on the proportional relation between a given reference area and the corresponding number of pixels, and the computing time was 0.74 to 0.82 second depending on the size of apple. 3. The coloration of an apple was expressed as the ratio of the gray value of a reference color to that of a given bounded area of the stem end surface (defined as coloration index), and the computing time was about 3.0 seconds with this algorithm. 4. Defect of an apple could be isolated by lowpass filtering and image subtraction but it took about 20 seconds in computing time. 5. The coloration of the Fuji apple could be classified into 3 to 4 groups by the coloration index and also, it was found that the correlation coefficient between the indices and sugar contents was 0.74. 6. The coloration index obtained from a given bounded area of the stem end side of the Fuji apple could represent the coloration of total surface with a correlation coefficient of 0.922.

Occurrence and Analysis of Apple Blotch-like Symptoms on Apple Leaves

  • Apple blotch-like symptoms (ABLS) were observed on 'Fuji' apple leaves in Cheongsong, Gunwi and Yeongcheon apple orchards located in Gyeongbuk Province during 2010-2014. Characteristics of ABLS were yellowing, brown spots on leaves, and defoliation, similar to apple blotch diseased (ABD) leaves, which are infected with Marssonina coronaria. It is difficult to differentiate by eye between ABLS and ABD, which has led to misdiagnosis and overuse of fungicides. The present study was conducted to investigate the cause of ABLS using stereomicroscopy, culture isolation, cross-sectional analysis of leaves, and PCR. No acervuli were found on the surface of ABLS leaves and no growth was observed on potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates in culture. Furthermore, cross-sectional analysis revealed similar results, and mycelia were absent in ABLS leaves. By contrast, all these characteristics were present in ABD leaves. Furthermore, no fungi or viruses were detected in ABLS leaves by PCR, suggesting that the disease is not caused by these agents. These findings suggest that ABLS might be a physiological disorder in plants that is distinct from ABD.

휴면 정도 및 탄소 함량이 '후지' 사과나무 과대지의 내동성에 미치는 영향 (Influence of Dormancy Level and Carbon Concentration on Freezing Hardiness in Bourse Shoot of 'Fuji' Apple Tree)

  • 본 시험은 휴면 정도 및 탄소 함량이 사과나무의 과대지 내동성에 미치는 영향을 밝히고자 실시하였다. 시험재료는 M.26과 M.9에 접목된 성목기 '후지' 사과나무의 과대지였다. 과대지의 휴면 정도는 자발휴면기(1월말), 자발휴면 타파 초기(2월초), 자발휴면 타파 후기(2월말), 발아기(3월말) 및 개화기(4월말)로 구분 하였다. 저온처리 범위는 $0^{\circ}C$부터 $-40^{\circ}C$ 사이였다. 탄소 함량의 차이에 따른 내동성은 갈색무늬병에 의해 낙엽이 심하게 발생한 '후지'/M.9 사과나무(낙엽구)와 과다결실에 의해 평균 신초장이 20cm 이하였던 '후지'/M.9 사과나무(수세가 약한 시험구)를 대상으로 조사하였다. 결과를 살펴보면, 과대지의 내동성은 자발휴면 타파 후에 약해졌다. M.9와 M.26에 접목된 '후지' 사과나무 과대지의 탄소 함량의 차이는 없었으며, M.9과 M.26 대목에 접목한 사과나무 과대지의 내동성 차이는 없었다. 건전구에 비해 낙엽구의 과대지는 C/N율이 낮았고, 수세가 약한 시험구는 탄소 함량이 낮았다. 이러한 결과에 의해 낙엽구와 수세가 약한 시험구의 내동성은 건전구보다 약하였다.

성숙기 사과 중의 페놀계물질 변화 (Changes of Phenolic Compounds in Korean Apple(Fuji) during maturation)

  • The changes of phenolics in Korean apple(Fuji) during maturation were analyzed by HPLC and spec-tropotometry. The phenolics were separated through C18 Sep-Pak cartridge in series. Chlorogenic acid caffeic acid p-coumaric acid ferulic acid and ($\pm$)-catethin were indentified by the direct comparison with authentics on HPLC. The total amounts of phenolics were determined by Folin-Dennis's method. The amounts ranged from 70.19mg% to 97.57mg% of wet basis. The concentration of phenolics in apple decreased during the early stage of development and then remained relatively constant during matu-ration .

'Fuji'/M.9 사과나무에 있어 세장방추형의 수고가 영양생장, 생산성 및 노동력에 미치는 영향 (Influence of Tree Height on Vegetative Growth, Productivity, and Labour in Slender Spindle of 'Fuji'/M.9 Apple Trees)

  • 재식거리 $3.2{\times}1.2m$로 심어 수고 2.5m의 세장방추형으로 관리해 오던 '후지'/M.9 사과나무를 재식 6년차부터 2년 동안 수고 4.0m로 관리하였다. 이후 재식 8년차에 수고를 2.5m(대조구), 3.0m, 3.5m, 4.0m로 조절하고 수고에 따른 2년간의 생산성 및 노동력을 비교하였다. 대조구인 수고 2.5m를 기준으로 하여 처리에 따른 10a당 생산량을 비교해 보면 첫해에는 수고 4.0m, 3.5m, 3.0m에서 각각 46%, 25%, 4%, 2년차에는 17%, 12%, 10% 증가하였다. 수고에 따른 과실 품질에 있어서는 가용성 고형물 함량은 2개년 모두 수고 2.5m가 가장 높았으나, 착색정도는 수고에 따른 뚜렷한 차이가 없었다. 노동력은 수고가 높아질수록 증가하였으나, 노동력에 따른 과실생산량은 수고가 낮을수록 증가하였다. 조수입과 순수입은 2005년의 경우 수고가 높아질수록 증가하였으나, 2006년은 수고 2.5m가 가장 높았지만 통계적 유의차는 없었다. 따라서 수고에 따른 생산성, 노동력, 경제성을 고려해 볼때 적정수고는 3.0~3.5m인 것으로 판단되었다.
