  • Nuclear energy sources are indispensable in cost effectively achieving carbon neutral economy, where public opinion is critical to adoption as the consequences of nuclear accident can be catastrophic. In this context, discussion on spent nuclear fuel is a prerequisite to expanding nuclear energy, as it leads to the issue of radioactive waste disposal. Given the dearth of study on spent nuclear fuel public acceptance, we use text mining and big data analysis on the news article and public comments data on Naver news portal to identify the Korean public opinion on spent nuclear fuel. We identify that the Korean public is more interested in the nuclear energy policy than spent nuclear fuel itself and that the alternative energy sources affect the position towards spent nuclear fuel. We recommend relating spent nuclear fuel issue with nuclear energy policy and environmental issues of alternative energy sources to further promote spent nuclear fuel.

  • Recently, the operation of power systems has become more difficult because the peak demand load is increasing continuously and the daily load factor is getting worse and worse. Also, the consideration of deregulation and global environment in electric power industry is required. In order to overcome those problems, a study on the planning and operation in power systems of dispersed generating sources such as fuel cell systems, photovoltaic systems and wind power systems, has been performed energetically. This paper presents a method for determining an optimal operation strategy of dispersed co-generating sources, especially fuel cell generation systems, considering thermal supply as well as electric power supply. In other words, the optimal operation of those sources can be determined easily by the principle of equal incremental fuel cost and the thermal merit of those sources can be also evaluated quantitatively through Kuhn-Tucker's optimal conditions. In additions, an priority method using the comparison of total cost at the peak load time interval is presented in order ot select the optimal locations of those sources. The validity of the proposed algorithms is demonstrated using a model system.

  • This study analyzes transitions to a green path in transportation system in South Korea. We develop transportation system model with four new technology options, green cars; Hybrid electric vehicle, plug-in hybrid vehicle, electric vehicle and fuel cell vehicle. Among those technologies fuel cell vehicle is the best option assuming no GHG emissions when driving. We use MESSAGE model to get an optimal solution of pathway for high deployment of fuel cell vehicles under the Korea BAU transportation model. Among hydrogen production sources, off gas hydrogen is most economic since it is hardly used to other chemical sources or emits in South Korea. According to off gas hydrogen projection it can run 1.8 million fuel cell vehicles in 2040 which corresponds to 10% of all passenger cars expected in Korea in 2040. However, there are concerns associated with technology maturity, cost uncertainty which has contradictions. But clean pathway with off gas and renewable sources may provide a strong driving force for energy transition in transportation in South Korea.

  • In the present study, performances of fuel cell driven compound source hybrid heat pump system applied to a large community building are simulated. Among several renewable energy sources, ground, river, sea, and waste water sources are chosen as available alternative energies. The performance and energy cost are varied with the hybrid heat pump sources. The system design and operation process appropriate for the surrounding circumstance guarantee the high benefit of the heat pump system applied to a large community building. Th system is driven by fuel cell system instead of the late-night electricity due to the advantages of the low energy cost and waste heat with high temperature.

  • One of the problems in using renewable energy sources is great difficulty of stable and sustainable supply. Because the fuel cell can provide stable and sustainable supply of energy sources without regard to external conditions, however, it will become one of the most useful renewable energy sources for buildings that need stable energy supply. For practical application of PEMFC system to common household, the data of household energy consumption are analyzed by electricity, cooking and heating. From the result of the data analysis, practical application methods of PEMFC system to household are designed to several models. The aim of this study is to establish a plan of practical application for applying Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell(PEMFC) system to the households.

  • The fuel cell systems are one of very useful energy sources. The systems have advantages as renewable and environmental sources. To obtain AC components from fuel cells, it needs inverters. A multilevel converter is used as a power conversion system for a high power fuel cell system. Through harmonic analysis, it is shown that the harmonic components and THD increase while a fundamental component of output decreases as voltage droop increases. To solve the voltage disturbance problems, three different approaches are investigated in this paper; installation of a boost converter at the fuel cell output, control of pulse widths, and use of ultracapacitors. The proposed three approaches are analyzed and compared through simulation and experimental results.

  • Since sulfur dioxide is released from the oxidation of sulfur in fuel, the level of $SO_2$ in industrial areas can be effectively managed by optimizing the allocation of fuels: the fuel should be allocated to each industries so as to achieve the air quality goal in the area with minimum fuel cost. The solution for this can be by solved using linear programming technique incorporated with the Gaussian dispersion equation. When this method was applied in Ulsan Industrial Complex, 39.3% of fuel expense could be saved compared with the present uniform fuel policy. With this method, bituminous coal generally was allocated to big emission sources such as power plants or to industries sparsely located in remote areas, and LPG or low-sulfur oils to small or medium-size sources in dense indurstrial aras. However, the particulates emission will increase with this policy, because it maximizes the use of coal within the limit to achieve the air quality goal in the area.

  • Hybrid electric vehicles(HEV) combined with more than one power sources have great potential to improve fuel economy and reduce pollutant emissions. The Integrated Starter Generator(ISG) HEV researched in this paper is a two energy sources vehicle, with a conventional internal combustion engine(ICE) and an energy storage system(batteries). In order to investigate the potential of diesel engine hybrid electric vehicles in fuel economy improvement and emissions reduction, a Dynamic Programming(DP) based supervisory controller is developed to allocate the power requirement between ICE and batteries with the objective of minimizing a weighted cost function over given drive cycles. A fuel-economy-only case and a fuel & emissions case can be achieved by changing specific weighting factors. The simulation results of the fuel-economy-only case show that there is a 45.1% fuel saving potential for this ISG HEV compared to a conventional transit bus. The test results present a 39.6% improvement in fuel economy which validates the simulation results. Compared to the fuel-economy-only case, the fuel & emissions case further reduces the pollutant emissions at a cost of 3.2% and 4.5% of fuel consumption with respect to the simulation and test result respectively.

  • Fuel cells are expected to be promising future power sources in both aspects of thermal efficiency and environmental friendliness. Accordingly, worldwide research and development efforts have been enormously increasing recently in various applications such as power plants, transportation and portable power sources. Among others, high temperature fuel cells, such as solid oxide fuel cells and molten carbonate fuel cells, are suitable for electric power plants. Moreover, their high operating temperature is quite appropriate to construct further advanced integrated systems. This paper reviews recent literatures on research and development of integrated power generation systems based on high temperature fuel cells. Research and development efforts are summarized in the area of fuel cell/ gas turbine hybrid systems, application of carbon capture technology to fuel cell systems, integration of coal gasification with fuel cells, and the use of alternative fuels.
