This paper shortly describe the R&D results for developing of 250 kW externally reforming MCFC (Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell) CHP proto type. Conceptual Design and basic design were alredy completed and stack which was adapted new separator and components also prepared for operation and evaluation. In parallel with stack and system development, BOP such as PCS, blower, catalytic combustor and Reformer also designed and fabricated for evaluation. The system will be fabricated by the end of 2008 and operate and evaluate in 2009.
The linear actuator has the inherent drawback of air gap variation because its linear motion is usually guided by the springs, which destabilizes the dynamic performance. In order to design the linear actuator to be insensitive to air gap, this paper describes the robust design of the air compressor driving linear actuator using Taguchi method. The orthogonal arrays are constructed with selected control factors and noise factor for minimum experiment. The control factors are thickness of inner magnet, height of upper yoke, thickness of outer magnet and thickness of lower yoke while noise factor is airgap. The finite element analysis using commercial electromagnetic analysis program "MAXWELL" are performed instead of experiment. ANOVA are performed to investigate the effects of design factors. In result, the optimal robust linear actuator which is insensitive to air gap variation is designed.
A new microcombustor configuration for a micro fuel-cell reformer integrated with a micro evaporator was studied experimentally and computationally. The present microcombustor is simply cylindrical to be easily fabricated but two-staged, expending downstream, to feasibly control ignition and stable burning. Results show that the aspect ratio of the first stage and the wall thickness of the microcombustors substantially affect ignition and thermal characteristics. For the optimized design conditions, a premixed microflame was easily ignited in the expanded second stage combustor, moved into the smaller first stage combustor, and finally stabilized therein. The measured and predicted temperature distributions across the microcombustor walls indicated that heat generated in the microcombustor is well transferred. Thus, the present microcombustor configuration could be applied to the practical micro reformers integrated with a micro evaporator for use of fuel cells.

In this paper, the optimal fuzzy logic controller(FLC) for a hybrid renewable energy system(HRES) is proposed. Generally, hybrid renewable energy systems can consist of wind power, solar power, fuel cells and storage devices. The proposed FLC can effectively control the entire HRES by determining the output power of the fuel cell or the absorption power of the electrolyzer. In general, fuzzy logic controllers can be optimized by classical optimization algorithms such as genetic algorithms(GA) or particle swarm optimization(PSO). However, these FLC have a disadvantage in that their performance varies greatly depending on the control parameters of the optimization algorithms. Therefore, we propose a method to optimize the fuzzy logic controller using the teaching-learning based optimization(TLBO) algorithm which does not have the control parameters of the algorithm. The TLBO algorithm is an optimization algorithm that mimics the knowledge transfer mechanism in a class. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, we modeled the hybrid system using Matlab Tool and compare and analyze the performance with other classical optimization algorithms. The simulation results show that the proposed method shows better performance than the other methods.
Pyroprocessing technology was developed in the beginning for metal fuel treatment in the US in the 1960s. The conventional aqueous process, such as PUREX, is not appropriate for treating metal fuel. Pyroprocessing technology has advantages over the aqueous process: less proliferation risk, treatment of spent fuel with relatively high heat and radioactivity, compact equipment, etc. The addition of an oxide reduction process to the pyroprocessing metal fuel treatment enables handling of oxide spent fuel, which draws a potential option for the management of spent fuel from the PWR. In this context, KAERI has been developing pyroprocessing technology to handle the oxide spent fuel since the 1990s. This paper describes the current status of pyroprocessing technology development at KAERI from the head-end process to the waste treatment. A unit process with various scales has been tested to produce the design data associated with the scale up. A performance test of unit processes integration will be conducted at the PRIDE facility, which will be constructed by early 2012. The PRIDE facility incorporates the unit processes all together in a cell with an Ar environment. The purpose of PRIDE is to test the processes for unit process performance, operability by remote equipment, the integrity of the unit processes, process monitoring, Ar environment system operation, and safeguards related activities. The test of PRIDE will be promising for further pyroprocessing technology development.

Removing residual water in a fuel cell is a critical operational process for managing its performance and controlling its lifetime. Understanding the mechanism of water transport in fuel cells is essential for the design of the water removal process. In this study, an experimental method for measuring the water evaporation rate through a gas diffusion layer, which is a porous medium, under steady-state conditions was developed. Experimental bench tests were conducted to apply the developed method. Then, the effects of various parameters of the drying gas and the gas diffusion layer were experimentally measured. The water evaporation rate increased as the humidity of the drying gas decreased and the flow rate of the drying gas increased. In addition, a thinner gas diffusion layer yielded a higher water evaporation rate.

In this paper, the proposed full-bridge high frequency isolated zoo voltage and zero current switching phase shifted pulse width modulation(ZVZCS PS-PWM)DC-DC converter among fuel cell generation system consist of 1.2[kW] fuel cell of Nexa Power Module, full-bridge DC-DC converter to boost the fuel cell low voltage($28{\sim}43[%]$) to 380[VDC] and a single phase full-bridge inverter is implemented to produce AC output(220[VAC], 60[Hz]). A tapped inductor filter with freewheeling diode is newly implemented in the output filter of the proposed full-bridge high frequency isolated ZVZCS PS-PWM DC-DC converter to suppress circulating current under the wide output voltage regulation range, thus to eliminate the switching and transformer turn-on/off over-short voltage or transient phenomena. Besides the efficiency of $93{\sim}97[%]$ is obtained over the wide output voltage regulation ranges and load variations.

The proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell system is critically dependent on the humidity, which should be properly maintained over the entire operating range. A membrane humidifier is used for the water management in the PEMFC because of the membrane humidifier's reliable performance and zero parasitic power loss. In the PEMFC system, the membrane humidifier is required to provide appropriate humidity for the design point of the fuel cell. Although the performance of the fuel cell depends on the performance of the humidifier, few studies have provided a systematic analysis of the humidifier. We carry out an experimental analysis of the membrane humidifier using a vapor condensation bottle. The dry air pressure, water flow temperature, and air flow rate were chosen as the operating parameters. The results show that the time constant for the dynamic response of the membrane humidifier is relatively short, but additional analysis should be carried out.
This paper presents experimental measurements of the structural characteristics of a two-pad beam-type gas foil journal bearing and its rotordynamic performance for a high-speed motor-driven turbocompressor. The test bearing had two top foils and two beam foils, each with an arc length of ~180°. Each beam foil was etched to obtain 40 beams with six geometries of different lengths and widths. The insertion of beam foils into the bearing housing produces equivalent beam heights. The structural tests of the bearing with a non-rotating journal revealed a smaller bearing clearance and larger structural stiffness for the load-on-pad configuration than for the load-between-pads configuration. Rotordynamic performance measurements during driving tests up to 100 krpm demonstrated synchronous vibrations and subsynchronous vibrations with large amplitudes. The test was repeated after inserting the shim between the top foil and beam foil to reduce the bearing radial clearance. The reduced bearing clearance resulted in a reduction in the peak amplitude of the synchronous vibrations and an increase in the speed at which the peak amplitude occurred. In addition, the onset speed and amplitude of the subsynchronous vibrations were dramatically increased and diminished, respectively. The rotor coast-down tests at 100 krpm show that the reduction in the bearing clearance extends the time to rotor stop, thus implying an improvement in hydrodynamic pressure generation and a reduction in bearing frictional torque.

The processes for the smelting of a metal product and the solidification of a molten salt were developed respectively to treat the products from the electrochemical reduction process. The method for the separation of a metal product in a magnesia container from the residual. salt and consequent smelting of it to a metal ingot by the multi step heating in vacuum was proposed. The new concept using a dual vessel and a salt valve was also suggested for the solidification of a molten salt into a regular size and shape which is suitable for the transport and measurement. The results obtained in the study will be applied to the design of the hot cell demonstration system of the Advanced Spent Fuel Conditioning Process of KAERI.
