This study proposes a design method of fuel cell DC/DC converter using in 5-ton forklift. For efficient hydrogen usage, targeted fuel cell system recirculates discarded hydrogen after fuel cell reaction. Recirculating hydrogen contains much impurities that reduces output power, increasing pressure that can damage the internal fuel cell reaction system. The proposed DC/DC converter effectively converts fuel cell power considering the voltage drop rate to reflect the recirculating hydrogen. Then, frequency control method is used to regulate the current ripple amount for battery and fuel cell hybrid configuration. Proposed power converter system design and control methods are verified in a practical fuel cell system that implements recirculating hydrogen.

This paper presents an advanced dynamic simulation model of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell for the optimal design of a fuel cell power conditioning system (FC-PCS). For the development of fuel cell models, the dynamic characteristics of the fuel cell are considered, including its static characteristics. Then, software fuel cell simulation is realized using Matlab-Simulink. Specifically, the design consideration of PCS (i.e., power semiconductor switch, capacitor, and inductor) is discussed by comparatively analyzing the developed simulator and ideal DC source. In addition, a cosimulation between the fuel cell model and PCS realized using the PSIM software is performed with the help of the SimCoupler module. Detailed analysis and informative simulation results are provided for the optimal design of fuel cell PCS.

This paper presents guideline for a practical design of the hybrid system combining a pressurized solid oxide fuel cell and a gas turbine. Design of the hybrid system based on a virtually designed gas turbine was simulated using models for off-design operation of the gas turbine. Two system configurations, with different method for supplying reforming steam, are considered and their design characteristics are compared. A higher design cell temperature provides better system performance. However, there exists a maximum allowable design cell temperature because the operating point of the compressor approaches the surge point with increasing fuel cell temperature. Increased pressure loss at the fuel cell moves the compressor operating point toward the surge point and reduces system performance.

In terms of the vehicle efficiency, a fuel cell hybrid system has advantages compared to a conventional internal combustion engine and a fuel cell alone-powered system. The efficiency of the fuel cell hybrid vehicle mainly depends on the maximum power of the fuel cell and therefore it is important to decide the design value of the fuel cell maximum power. In this paper, to estimate the performance of the fuel cell hybrid mini-bus in the design phase the simulator based on the models for the fuel cell stack, the electric battery, the fuel cell balance of plant, the controller, and the vehicle itself is proposed. Additionally, the hybrid mini-bus efficiencies with several different fuel cell powers are simulated for a city driving schedule and are compared on another. Consequently, the proposed simulation scheme is useful to determine the best design value of the fuel cell hybrid vehicles.
In this paper, a mathematical modeling was developed to simulate 1kW class air cooled Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell(PEMFC) system. The proposed modeling was conducted under SIMULINK based environment. The model ing was developed based on the thermodynamic and chemical equilibrium. The objective is to design and implement the entire fuel cell system model ing including the system controller modeling. The fuel cell process and the control system modeling should have to be connected with each other simultaneously, therefore the two types of modeling influences each other when the system simulator run. The fuel cell modeling libraries are simulated using the SIMULINK under the thermodynamic and chemical equilibrium base. The PID controller application was designed and developed to test the process modeling and verify it. This the prototype development of the fuel cell system to design and test more complicate fuel cell systems, like the residential power generation system. The simulation results was compared to the real PEMFC system performance. We have achieved the reasonable accordance with the Lab test and the simulation results.
A 25kW-class polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell system has been developed for the propulsion of a leisure boat. The fuel cell system was designed to satisfy various performance requirements, such as resistance to shock, stability under rolling and pitching oscillations, and durability under salinity condition, for its marine applications. Then, the major components including a 30kW-class PEM fuel cell stack, a DC-DC converter, a seawater cooling system, secondary battery packs, and balance of plants were developed for the fuel cell system. The PEM fuel cell stack employs a unique design structure called an anodic cascade-type stack design in which the anodic cells are divided into several blocks to maximize the fuel utilization without hydrogen recirculation devices. The performance evaluation results showed that the stack generated a maximum power of 31.0kW while maintaining a higher fuel utilization of 99.5% and an electrical efficiency of 56.1%. Combining the 30-kW stack with other components, the 25kW-class fuel cell system boat was fabricated for a leisure. As a result of testing, the fuel cell system reached an electrical efficiency of 48.0% at the maximum power of 25.6kW with stable operability. In the near future, two PEM fuel cell systems will be installed in a 20-m long leisure boat to supply electrical power up to 50kW for propelling the boat and for powering the auxiliary equipments.
The design of an air compressor-driving quadratic linear actuator in a fuel cell BOP system is studied using orthogonal techniques. The approach utilizes an orthogonal array for design of 'experiments', i.e. the scheme for numerical simulations using a finite element method. Eco-friendly energy is increasingly important due to the depletion of fossil fuels and environmental pollution. Among the new energy sources, fuel cell is spotlighted as renewable energy because it produces few dusts. The air compressor performance is directly related to the efficiency of the fuel cell BOP system has high power consumption. In this paper, an optimized technique using an orthogonal matrix is applied to the design problem to improve the performance of quadratic linear actuator.

Recirculation for the unreacted fuel is necessary to improve the overall efficiency of the fuel cell system and to prevent fuel starvation since the fuel cell for a vehicle application is a closed system. In case of the automotive fuel cell, the ejector which does not require any parasitic power is good for the performance improvement and easy operation. It is essential to design the customized ejector due to the lack of the commercial ejector corresponding to the operating conditions of the fuel cell systems. In this study, the design methodology for the ejector customized to an automotive fuel cell is proposed. The model based sensitivity analysis prevents the time-consuming redesign and reduces the cost of developing ejector. As a result, the customized ejector to meet the desired performance within overall operating range has developed for the PEMFC automotive system.
This study presents analysis results for the hybrid system combining solid oxide fuel cell and gas turbine. Two different system layouts(an ambient pressure system and pressurized system) are considered and their design performance are comparatively investigated taking into account critical design factor, the most critical parameter such as turbine inlet temperature, gas turbine pressure ratio, temperature difference at the fuel cell and fuel cell operating temperature are considered as design constraints. Performance variations according to system layout and design parameters are examined in energetic view point.

For the hydrogen recirculation system of the PEMFC (polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell), the ejector is useful to improve the efficiency of the fuel cell system. However, conventional ejector does not keep its entrainment ratio good when the various power duties is required by the fuel cell system. In this study, the variable multi-ejector acceptable in the whole duty range required from the fuel cell hybrid mini-bus is developed. Consequently, the performance of the developed ejector is verified by the experiments based on the real operating conditions.
