A fruit soft rot caused by Mucor piriformis occurred on sweet persimmon storages in Jinju, Changwon and Gimhae, Gyeongnam province, Korea, 2003. The disease infection usually started from wounding after cracking of fruits. At first, the lesions started with water soaked and rapidly softened and diseased lesion gradually expanded. Colonies on potato dextrose agar at $20^{\circ}C$ were whitish to olivaceous-buff Sporangia were globose, black and $96{\sim}153{\mu}m$ in size. Sporangiophores were $26{\sim}42{\mu}m$ in width. Sporangiospores were ellipsoid and $5.8{\sim}10.6{\times}4.3{\sim}7.6{\mu}m$ in size. Columella was obovoid, cylindrical-ellipsoidal, pyriform, subglobose and $80{\sim}125{\mu}m$ in size. Optimal temperature for mycelial growth was $20^{\circ}C$ on PDA. The causal organism was identified as M. piriformis. This is the first report of fruit soft rot on sweet persimmon caused by M. piriformis in Korea.
A persimmon (Diospyros kaki L. Thunb.) cultivar, 'Chosi', which was a cross between 'Johongsi' and 'Nishimurawase' in 2000, was finally selected in 2010. 'Chosi' persimmon fruits were harvested in Sept. 19 in Naju, with a medium fruit size of 161 g, on average, and high soluble solids of approximately 15.3 °Bx. The flesh tastes good, with a crispy texture, and the juice is rich. The shape of the fruit is round oblate, and the skin color is orange; the appearance is graceful. Physiological disorders, such as stylar-end cracking or skin fine cracking, rarely occur in this cultivar. (Registration No. 7075)
'Cheonhong'was released by the National Horticultural Research Institute in 1992 as a new mid-ripening, yellow-fleshed, and freestone nectarine variety, which originated from open-pollinated seeds of 'Garden State' nectarine collected in 1978. This was tested as 'Wonkyo Da-03' at 4 areas for 4 years from 1989. 'Cheonhong' is resistant to fruit cracking during rainy season and russeting. Fruits mature about 15 days before 'SunGlo' and have rich-flavor and good quality.
Tomato fruits(Lycopersicon esculentum $M_{ILL}$.) picked at mature (from mature green to breaker) and ripe (from pink to red) stage were packed into two layers in corrugated fiberbox and transported 200km and 400km from the harvested site. Loss (abrasion + cracking) in marketability was lowest (11.0%) from mature + 200km transport, followed by mature + 400km transport(13.5%), ripe + 200km transport(28.5%), and ripe + 400km transport (45.5%). When data were pooled by fruit maturity, firmness of mature fruit was 1.55 times higher than ripe fruit. However, vitamin C content was 1.25 times higher in ripe fruit than in mature fruit. Fruit transported longer distance and packed in bottom layer within a box exhibited lower firmness and vitamin C content in both maturity. It was concluded that it is desirable to transport relatively shorter distance for ripe tomato and longer distance for less ripe fruit.
The effects of girdling on fruit quality and cold resistance of 'Kyoho' grapes were investigated. Girdling treatment was conducted on the trunk at 10 cm above ground with 1 cm width and grapes were harvested at 90 and 110 days after full bloom to compare the fruit quality. First harvesting rate in girdling treatment was higher than that in non-girdling treatment and coloration was also higher in girdled vines at the final harvest. In other words, coloring process of grape was promoted and enhanced by girdling, but this effect of coloring improvement was decreased after successive girdling treatment. Fruit quality showed no difference between the treated and non-treated berries, but fruit cracking rate was lower in girdled treated berries. Girdled trees were weakened and suffered from freezing damage. Especially, most grapevines withered up after being girdled for three consecutive years. Although girdling had effect on improving the berry coloring significantly, the effect wore off with continuous girdling. And it was possible that consecutive girdling leaded to wither and growth suppression especially in grapevines. These adverse effects may make the continuous girdling technique unsuitable in practice for 'Kyoho' grape.
Postharvest treatments such as polyethylene film wrapping, ethylene scrubber, and fruit coatings were compared to find a potential effect on the fruit quality in 'Fuji' apples during storage and simulated marketing. Polyethylene film wrapping appeared to be excellent in preventing weight loss during storage but fruits lost weight at a high rate when exposed to ambient temperature during simulated marketing. Also, surface cracking disorder was observed in parts of film-wrapped fruit under marketing condition after storage of 21 weeks. Ethylene scrubber effectively removed ethylene in polyetheylene bags but this effect reduced along with the increase of storage time. Although Prolong-treated fruits were good in appearance at 12-week storage, no beneficial effect was found on the inhibition of weight loss during storage as well as marketing. In addition, wax-like substances were accumulated on the surface after storage of 21 weeks, resulting in the reduction of marketability. Water soluble wax seemed highly effective on the inhibition of weight loss during storage and marketing. However, parts of fruit were severely injured probably due to the high concentration of wax. Undamaged fruit showed excellent appearance in shape and flesh quality even after 21 weeks of storage. Further study is required to find the proper concentration of wax.

The effects of organic calcium agent(ECa) tree-spray on the mineral nutrition concentration of petiole and fruit skin and quality in grapevines were studied. The calcium concentration of petiole and fruit skin at harvest in 'Campbell Early' by tree-spray after flowering 14days of calcium agent were increased significantly in calcium chloride 0.4%, ECa 250X and MCa 500X compared to control. The calcium concentration of petiole and fruit skin at harvest by ECa tree-spray after 7 days and 14 days flowering were increased significantly compared to control and 21 days after flowering treatment. Also, The calcium concentration of petiole and fruit skin at harvest by tree-spray of ECa 250X and 125X after flowering were increased significantly compared to control and 500X treatment. Fruit quality, fruit cluster weight, cracking fruit and Bitter rot occurrence by ECa tree-spray of treatment time and concentration different showed no difference between control. Phytotoxicity by tree-spray of ECa concentration different not occur to leaf and fruit.
'Choha' was released by the National Horticultural Research Institute in 1997 as a new early-maturing and high-quality apricot variety, which originated from the crossing of 'N.Y. 472' and 'Early Orange' in 1986. This variety was tested as 'Wonkyo Sa-05' at 4 areas for 3 years from 1995. 'Choha' is resistant to fruit cracking by rainy spells just before fruit maturing. Fruits mature in late June, earlier than any other varieties. The content of soluble solids is $12.5^oBx$ and fruit acidity is low. Fruits are relatively large, about 60g in weight.
The effects of calcium concentrations of coating bag treatment to reduce berry cracking were investigated through the changes of pericarp structure and berry cracking rate in 'Kyoho' grape. The soluble solids and anthocyanin contents in harvested grapes were highest at $18.1^{\circ}Brix$ and $2.56{\mu}g{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ in non bagging group compared with those of calcium coating bag treatments. The firmness of pericarp was lowest in non bagging group ($1.18kg{\cdot}5mm^{-1}{\O}$) compared with bagging treatments (1.23, 1.24, 1.27, $1.35kg{\cdot}5mm^{-1}{\O}$) which increased effectively in proportion to calcium concentration. As a result of histological observation of the fruit skin, the bagging with higher calcium concentration developed thicker epidermal and sub-epidermal layer of cell wall than that of non bagging. Moreover, the strengthened berry skin of calcium treatments effectively decreased berry cracking rate under critical turgor pressure. However, the 9% calcium coating bag treatment which was the most effective for cracking reduction seriously decreased marketability of harvested grape with white color staining on berry skin caused by eluted calcium from the coated paper bag. Based on our results, we recommend that 6% calcium coating bag be available for berry cracking reduction and higher quality production.
