일본 동상성판정기준을 적용한 시료의 동상예측 및 동상성 평가 (Evaluation of Frost Heave Prediction and Frost Susceptibility in Sample using JGS Test Method)

  • This paper show two different standardized test methods(Japanese Geotechnical Society; JGS 2003). One test is a "Test Method for Frost Heave Prediction Test, JGS 0171-2003", and the other test is a "Test Method for Frost Susceptibility, JGS 0172-2003". The purpose of this test is to obtain the freezing rate(freezing speed), frost heave ratio(heave to sample height), frost heave rate(heaving speed), and other parameters to be used for frost heave prediction and determine the frost susceptibility by freezing test with water intake. This method shall be used to predict the frost heave in frozen ground and evaluate the frost susceptibility of natural and replacement materials.

Experimental assessment of the effect of frozen fringe thickness on frost heave

  • A frozen fringe plays a key role in frost heave development in soils. Previous studies have focused on the physical and mechanical properties of the frozen fringe, such as overall hydraulic conductivity, water content and pore pressure. It has been proposed that the thickness of the frozen fringe controls frost heave behavior, but this effect has not been thoroughly evaluated. This study used a temperature-controllable cell to investigate the impact of frozen fringe thickness on the characteristics of frost heave. A series of laboratory tests was performed with various temperature boundary conditions and specimen heights, revealing that: (1) the amount and rate of development of frost heave are dependent on the frozen fringe thickness; (2) the thicker the frozen fringe, the thinner the resulting ice lens; and (3) care must be taken when using the frost heave ratio to characterize frost heave and evaluate frost susceptibility because the frost heave ratio is not a normalized factor but a specimen height-dependent factor.

Assessment of the effect of fines content on frost susceptibility via simple frost heave testing and SP determination

  • The Segregation Potential (SP) is one of the most widely used predictors of frost heave in cold regions. Laboratory step-freezing tests determining a representative SP at the onset of the formation of the last ice lens (near the thermal steady state condition) can predict susceptibility to frost heave. Previous work has proposed empirical semi-log fitting for determination of the representative SP and applied it to several fine-grained soils, but considering only frost-susceptible soils. The presence of fines in coarse-grained soil affects frost susceptibility. Therefore, it is required to evaluate the applicability of the empirical semi-log fitting for both frost-susceptible and non-frost-susceptible soils with fines content. This paper reports laboratory frost heave tests for fines contents of 5%-70%. The frost susceptibility of soil mixtures composed of sand and silt was classified by the representative SP, and the suitability of the empirical semi-log fitting method was assessed. Combining semi-log fitting with simple laboratory frost heave testing using a temperature-controllable cell is shown to be suitable for both frost-susceptible and non-frost-susceptible soils. In addition, initially non-frost-susceptible soil became frost susceptible at a 10%-20% weight fraction of fines. This threshold fines content matched well with transitions in the engineering characteristics of both the unfrozen and frozen soil mixtures.

  • `Frost heave' is volumetric extension behavior of soil due to freezing. It could have a bad effect to foundations of infrastructures like building, road, railroad and bridge. Therefore, it is considered as a primary design parameter with 'adfreeze bond' and 'creep deformation' for foundation design in cold region. In some countries, studies for analyzing frost heave in many ways have being performed, however, only a few studies for evaluating frost susceptibility of soils by measuring frost heave rate of frozen soils in Korea. For analyzing frost heave as a foundation design parameter, both frost heaving rate and heaving pressure are should be addressed in study. Hence, in this study, development of experimental apparatus to evaluate frost heave and pressure is suggested.

동상시험장비의 실험적 검증 및 시료크기의 영향에 관한 연구 (Experimental Assessment and Specimen Height Effect in Frost Heave Testing Apparatus)

  • 동상은 동토지역에서 발생하는 대표적인 공학적 특성이다. 계절동토(seasonal frost area)에 해당하는 우리나라는 동결융해에 의한 구조적 피해가 발생하고 동상에 관한 연구의 필요성이 증대되고 있는 실정이다. 본 논문에서는 새롭게 개발한 투명 온도제어형 셀을 활용하여 동상에 관한 연구를 수행하였다. 동상에 민감한 흙을 인공적으로 조성하여 동상민감성 판정에 있어 중요한 인자 중 하나인 물 주입속도(water intake rate)에 관한 분석을 실시하였다. 간극수 동결에 의한 부피팽창(heave by pore water)이 수렴하는 시점 이후에 동상속도(frost heave rate)와 물 주입속도는 거의 유사하게 나타났다. 그러나 물 주입속도를 측정하기 위해 상부 페더스탈에 설치한 O-ring은 몰드 내벽과의 마찰을 발생시켜 동상발생을 저하시켰다. 따라서 물 주입속도를 활용한 동상민감성 판정 기준은 신뢰하기 힘들다고 판단되었으며, 유사한 거동을 보이는 동상속도를 활용하는 것이 적절하다는 결론을 내렸다. 또한, 동상민감성 흙을 활용해 시료크기가 동상에 미치는 영향을 파악하고자 하였다. 시료크기가 다른 2가지 경우에 대해 동상시험을 수행하였으며 상재하중, 온도구배, 그리고 건조단위중량을 동일하게 설정하였다. 실험결과를 토대로 시료크기는 동상에 영향을 미치지 않는다는 것을 발견하였다.

폐타이어를 이용한 지반동상 방지 (The Control of the Ground Frost Heave by Using the Scrap Tire)

  • 폐타이어가 지반의 동상방지 건설재료로서 재사용될 수 있는지를 연구하였다. 동상방지에 대한 폐타이어의 기본적인 효과를 검토하기 위해 화강풍화토에 폐타이어가루를 몇 가지의 비율로 혼합해서 준비한 시료로서 영하 $17^{\circ}$하에서 동상시험과 화강풍화토에 대한 동결깊이시험을 실내에서 수행하였다. 역청포장의 보조기층 바로 아래에 폐타이어조각을 혼합한 쇄석층을 동상방지층으로 둠으로서 실용상으로 효과적이라는 사실을 알게 되었다. 그리고 이 동상방지 층의 소요두께와 동결 지수와의 관계식을 제안하였다.

  • This study presents the laboratory properties on the frost heave under various moisture contents and compaction efforts in pavement subgrade soil. Many researches were conducted on the frost heave. However, the researches with the domestic soils have not been so active until now. In particular, the evaluation of the frost heave in pavement subgrade soils was not established by many researchers. The problems relating with the frost heave have been serious causes in the distresses of pavements. The study was performed using an appropriate field simulation. The research results revealed that the drainage conditions in earth work should be treated cautiously.

Investigation of the ASTM International frost heave testing method using a temperature-controllable cell

  • Frost heave can cause uneven ground uplift that may damage geo-infrastructure. To assist damage-prevention strategies, standard frost heave testing methods and frost susceptibility criteria have been established and used in various countries. ASTM International standard testing method is potentially the most useful standard, as abundant experimental data have been acquired through its use. ASTM International provides detailed recommendations, but the method is expensive and laborious because of the complex testing procedure requiring a freezing chamber. A simple frost heave testing method using a temperature-controllable cell has been proposed to overcome these difficulties, but it has not yet been established whether a temperature-controllable cell can adequately replace the ASTM International recommended apparatus. This paper reviews the applicability of the ASTM International testing method using the temperature-controllable cell. Freezing tests are compared using various soil mixtures with and without delivering blow to depress the freezing point (as recommended by ASTM International), and it is established that delivering blow does not affect heave rate, which is the key parameter in successful characterization of frost susceptibility. As the freezing temperature decreases, the duration of supercooling of pore water shortens or is eliminated; i.e., thermal shock with a sufficiently low freezing temperature can minimize or possibly eliminate supercooling.

현장모형실험을 통한 자갈궤도와 콘크리트궤도의 동결심도 및 동상량 측정 (Field Model Tests on Frost Penetration Depths and Frost Heave Amounts in Ballast track and Concrete track)

  • 철도 현장에 실험용 자갈궤도와 콘크리트궤도를 설치한 후 겨울철에 동결심도와 동상량을 측정하였다. 그 결과 같은 동결지수일 때 자갈궤도보다 콘크리트궤도의 동결심도가 깊게 나타나는 경향을 보였다. 또한 자갈궤도는 하부에 XPS, PE골재층을 포설할 경우 동결심도가 크게 감소하였고, 콘크리트궤도에서는 입도조정층의 두께를 늘릴 경우 동결심도가 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 동상량 역시 자갈궤도에서는 하부에 XPS, PE골재층을 설치할 경우 감소하였고, 콘크리트궤도에서는 입도조정층의 두께를 증가시킬 경우 감소하는 경향을 보였다.

폐타이어분말 혼합이 동상억제에 미치는 영향에 관한 실험적 연구 (An experimental study for reducing frost susceptibility using granulated used-tire)

  • The authors conducted field experiments of frost heave to evaluate a method for reducing frost susceptibility using granulated used-tire mixture for 3 winters. Qualitative analyses for the evaluation of restraint effect of frost susceptibility by utilizing granulated used-tire soil mixture were conducted with the segregation potential concept and frost heave ratio. By mixing soil with granulated tire, the frost susceptibility was decreased drastically. From the result of the analyses, it was confirmed that granulated tire is an excellent material in controlling the frost susceptibility.
