  • In this study, frosting experiment was conducted to investigate the characteristics of frost formed on heat exchanger fins of non-uniform temperature distribution. Temperature distribution and frost characteristics of a 2-D fin surface were investigated in the airflow direction and the direction perpendicular to airflow. Temperature gradient was very small in the airflow direction, while it was large in the direction perpendicular to airflow due to fin heat conduction. The variations of the frost thickness gradient and the frost density gradient in the direction perpendicular to airflow were significant. On the other hand, the temperature gradient on frost surface in the direction perpendicular to airflow was significant at the early stage of frosting, while it decreased gradually as time elapsed.

  • A study on acidity in fog, dew and frost was carried out. Samples were taken during May 1990-February 1991 at two sites in Chongwon, Choongbook. The acidity of dew and of fog collected from grass at site A was 4.89 and 5.46, respectively. Dew in summer showed very strong acidity. The volume of dew deposited on grass was much less than the volume of rain, but dew is effective to diffuse acid predursors and acid materials. Dew and fog can remove more effectively atmospheric acid materiasl deoposited on grass by diurnal turbulent motion rather than direct absorption of acid predursors and materials in the atmosphere. In a polluted area, acidic dew and fog can be occurred by the direct absorption and oxidation of acidic predursors in the atmosphere as well as the role of wet removal on grass surface. Acidity of frost collected on teflon surface showed little difference to acidity of dew and fog on teflon surface. This suggests a similar absorption mechanism of atmospheric precursors and materials into dew and frost in the atmosphere. Strong acidity in dew, fog and frost appeared to occur from local pollution sources of several ten kilometres. In particular, strong acidity in dew, fog, and frost together with acid rain can accelerate a damage in ecosystems. Discussion is made on scientific analyses and seasonal variations of acidity of fog, dew and frost. A mechanism on acidification of fog, dew and frost is also discussed.

  • This paper presents the effects of the fin array and pitch on the frost layer growth of a heat exchanger. The numerical results are compared with experimental data of a cold plate to validate the present model, and agree well with experimental data within a maximum error of 8%. The characteristics of the frost formation on staggered fin array are somewhat different from those of in-line array. The frost layer at the first fin of the in-line array grows rapidly, compared to second fin, whereas the difference of the frost layer growth between the fins of the staggered array is small. For fin pitch below 10 mm, the frost layer growth of second fin in the staggered array is affected by that of first fin. The frost layer growth and heat transfer of single fin deteriorate with decreasing fin pitch regardless of fin array, however, the thermal performance of a heat exchanger, considering increase of heat surface area, becomes better.

  • We conducted a study by computational simulation about the effects of frost thickness on the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics as whole heat exchanger configuration changes. In order to perform the analysis for validation, we assumed that frost properties have constant values and the frost layers that are formed on the fin and tube surfaces are uniform. In order to find the constant thermal conductivity of frost layer, a variety of frost thermal conductivities are performed in our work and compared with the results by Lee et al. [4] and Yang et al. [5] proposed many experimental data about the 2-rows and 2-columns finned tube heat exchanger. The numerical results agreed well with the experimental data when frost conductivity is 0.07W/mK. After the validation had performed, we applied this procedure to the finned tube heat exchanger of domestic refrigeration and investigated the thermo-hydraulic characteristic of the heat exchanger affected by frost thickness according to the inlet velocities and temperatures of air considering the configuration change such as fin pitch.

  • This paper presents the effects of the fin array and pitch on the frost layer growth of a heat exchanger. The numerical results are compared with experimental data of a cold plate to validate the present model, and agree well with experimental data within a maximum error of 8%. The frost behaviors of the staggered fin array are somewhat different from those of in-line array. The frost layer formed on the first fin of the in-line array grows rapidly, compared to second fin, whereas the difference of the frost layer growth between the fins of the staggered array is small. For fin pitch below 10 m, the frost layer growth of second fin in the staggered array is affected by that of first fin. The thickness of the frost layer and heat transfer of single fin are reduced with decreasing fin pitch regardless of fin array. However, the thermal performance of a heat exchanger is enhanced due to the increase of heat transfer surface area.

  • It is known that frost formation on surfaces of the heat exchanger seriously affects the performance of the refrigeration system. Accordingly, defrosting should follow, and effective defrosting is possible only when both analytic tools and comprehensive experimental data on frost formation are assailable. An experimental investigation was undertaken to characterize the effect of environmental parameters on frost formation on a horizontal cylinder in cross uniform flow. Several experiments were carried out with various environmental parameters such as inlet air temperature, inlet air humidity, air velocity and cooling surface temperature. Frost thickness, mass, surface temperature and cylinder inner and outer temperature were measured at front and rear positions of the cylinder. Thickness, mass, density, and effective thermal conductivity of the frost layer were obtained from measured data and effects of environmental parameters on the frost formation were analyzed. Data from experiments were correlated using dimensionless variables.

  • Since liquefied natural gas (LNG) is imported in a liquid state of about -162℃ to increase transportation efficiency in Korea, it must be vaporized in a gaseous state to supply it to consumers. Among them, ambient air vaporizer (AAV) has caught attention due to eco-friendly and low costs characteristics. However, there is a disadvantage that the performance of the heat exchanger is deteriorated due to frost due to mist and icing when used for a long time. In this paper, frost generation model in AAV vaporizer was investigated with numerically to examine utilizing the vaporizer performance with the frost generation behavior. The frost generation behavior of AAV vaporizers was examined with humidity, fin characteristic, and temperature effects. As for the LNG discharge temperature, the 12 fin vaporizer showed the highest discharge temperature when the atmospheric temperature was 25℃, and the 8 fin vaporizer had the lowest LNG discharge temperature when the atmospheric temperature was 0℃. In the case of frost formation, in the case of the 12 fin vaporizer, it was formed the most at the atmospheric temperature of 25℃, and the least was formed in the vaporizer at the 0℃ condition of the atmospheric temperature of 8 fins.

  • In this study, a model to classify frost occurrence and frost free day was developed using the digital weather forecast data provided by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The minimum temperature, average wind speed, relative humidity, and dew point temperature were identified as the meteorological variables useful for classification frost occurrence and frost-free days. It was found that frost-occurrence date tended to have relatively low values of the minimum temperature, dew point temperature, and average wind speed. On the other hand, relatively humidity on frost-free days was higher than on frost-occurrence dates. Models based on machine learning methods including Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Random Forest(RF), Support Vector Machine(SVM) with those meteorological factors had >70% of accuracy. This results suggested that these models would be useful to predict the occurrence of frost using a digital weather forecast data.

  • This study was carried out to investigate reduction of the frost damage using the mesh net used for the purpose of non-bagged cultivation. A device measuring the weight of frost was developed and installed in both the control and the experimental, and the effect of frost reduction was evaluated with their weights. As a result, weight of frost in the control was reduced from 37% to 59% with mesh net on the day the frost was observed. In addition, the device for automatically observing the amount of frost was developed and the height of the windbreak of the frost measuring device was determined to be 30 cm through wind tunnel experiment. The results of this study are expected to reduce frost damage during the flowering season of fruit trees by installing mesh net and it is expected to be used as basic data for agricultural use of mesh net.

  • A new system of modified freeze-thaw testing apparatus is introduced. This system is developed to evaluate the geotechnical parameters and their dependence upon freezing-thawing history of frost-susceptibility soil. A necessary condition for stationary frost heaving is clarified in this paper. The method changes the thermal boundary condition up to the net heat flow at the freezing frost becomes zero. The effectiveness of this method is verified by freeze-thaw tests. Frost heaving observed after the application of the method is found to be due to another frost heaving action called long-term frost heaving. This frost heaving has already been studied and is considered ignorable as engineering factor because of its small heaving amount.
