  • Researchers have recently begun to study hot stamping processes to shorten the mold cooling time and improve productivity. These publications explain that the mold cooling time can be reduced by using a curved cooling channel, where the mold surface is processed to a uniform depth, instead of a straight cooling channel that uses the conventional gun drilling machine. This study investigates the characteristics of the front pillar of an automobile after using a mold with a curved cooling channel. To analyze the change in properties, we used a 1.6 mm boron steel blank and heated the prototype at $930^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes. Next, we formed the prototype with a load of about 500 tons while varying the mold cooling time between 1 and 10 seconds. We subjected each prototype specimen to a tensile strength test, a hardness test, and a tissue surface observation.

  • Recent developments such as concern over global warming, depletion of fossil fuels and increase in energy demands by the increasing world population has eventually lead to mass production of electricity using renewable sources. Ocean contains energy in form of thermal energy and mechanical energy: thermal energy from solar radiation and mechanical energy from the waves and tides. The current paper looks at generating power using waves. The primary objective of the present study is to maximize the primary energy conversion (first stage conversion) of the base model by making some design changes. The model entire consisted of a numerical wave tank and the turbine section. The turbine section had three components; front guide nozzle, augmentation channel and the rear chamber. The augmentation channel further consisted of a front nozzle, rear nozzle and an internal fluid region representing the turbine housing. Different front guide nozzle configuration and rear chamber design were studied. As mentioned, a numerical wave tank was utilized to generate waves of desired properties and later the turbine section was integrated. The waves in the numerical wave tank were generated by a piston type wave maker which was located at the wave tank inlet. The inlet which was modeled as a plate wall which moved sinusoidally with the general function, $x=asin{\omega}t$. In addition to primary energy conversion, observation of flow characteristics, pressure and the velocity in the augmentation channel, rear chamber as well as the front guide nozzle are presented in the paper. The analysis was performed using the commercial code of the ANSYS-CFX. The base model recorded water power of 29.9 W. After making the changes, the best model obtained water power of 37.1 W which represents an increase of approximately 24% in water power and primary energy conversion.

  • This paper proposes a noise reduction-based speech detection method under telephone channel environments. We adopt the AURORA front-end noise reduction algorithm based on the two-stage mel-warped Wiener filter approach as a preprocessor for the frequency domain speech detector. The speech detector utilizes mel filter-bank based useful band energies as its feature parameters. The preprocessor firstly removes the adverse noise components on the incoming noisy speech signals and the speech detector at the next stage detects proper speech regions for the noise-reduced speech signals. Experimental results show that the proposed noise reduction-based speech detection method is very effective in improving not only the performance of the speech detector but also that of the subsequent speech recognizer.

  • Aluminum alloys are not only lightweight materials, but also have excellent thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity and workability, hence, they are widely used in industry. It is important to control and enhance the densification behavior of metal powders of aluminum. Investigation on the extrusion processing combined with equal channel angular pressing for densification of aluminum powders was performed in order to develop a continuous production process. The continuous processing achieved high effective strain and full relative density at $200^{\circ}C$. Optimum processing conditions were suggested for good mechanical properties. The results of this simulation helped to understand the distribution of relative density and effective strain.

  • Several interesting results were obtained from the flow visualization experiment in the accompanying paper, Part I. in the present study, Part II, a numerical study has been carried out to explain the detailed flow phenomena in micro-channel filling process. Hele-Shaw flow approximation was applied to the micro-channel geometry based on the small characteristic length. And surface tension effect has been introduced on the flow front as the boundary condition with the help of a dynamic contact angle concept between the melt front and the wall. A dimensional analysis for numerical results was carried out and a strong relationship between dimensionless pressure and Capillary number is obtained. The numerical analysis results are compared with the flow visualization experimental observations. And the numerical system developed in the present study seems to be able to predict the interesting micro-channel filling flow characteristics observed from experiments.

  • Shear lag phenomenon has long been taken into consideration in various structural codes; however, the AISC provisions have not proposed any specific equation to calculate the shear lag ratio in some cases such as fillet-welded connections of front-to-front double channel sections. Moreover, those equations and formulas proposed by structural codes are based on the studies that were conducted on riveted and bolted connections, and can be applied to single channel sections whilst using them for fillet-welded double channels would be extremely conservative due to the symmetrical shape and the fact that bending moments will not develop in the gusset plate, resulting in less stress concentration. Numerical models are used in the present study to focus on parametric investigation of the shear lag effect on fillet-welded tension connection of double channel section to a gusset plate. The connection length, the eccentricity of axial load, the free length and the thickness of gusset plate are considered as the key factors in this study. The results are then compared to the estimates driven from the AISC-LRFD provisions and alternative equations are proposed.

  • In case of sensorineural hearing loss, auditory perception can be activated by electrical stimulation of the nervous system via electrode implanted into the cochlea or auditory nerve. Since the tonotopic map of the human auditory nerve has not been definitively identified, the recording of auditory nerve signal with microelectrode is desirable for determining the tonotopic map. This paper proposes the multi-channel analog front-end for auditory nerve signal detection. A channel of the proposed analog front-end consists of an AC coupling circuit, a low-power 4th-order Gm-C LPF, and a single-slope ADC. The AC coupling circuit transfers only AC signal while it blocks DC signal level. Considering the bandwidth of the auditory signal, the Gm-C LPF is designed with OTAs adopting floating-gate technique. For the channel-parallel ADC structure, the single-slope ADC is used because it occupies the small silicon area. Experimental results shows that the AC coupling circuit and LPF have the bandwidth of 100 Hz - 6.95 kHz and the ADC has the effective resolution of 7.7 bits. The power consumption per a channel is $12\;{\mu}W$, the power supply is 3.0 V, and the core area is $2.6\;mm\;{\times}\;3.7\;mm$. The proposed analog front-end was fabricated in a 1-poly 4-metal $0.35-{\mu}m$ CMOS process.

  • To examine the movement of the freshwater discharged artificially into the estuary during ebbing period in the Keum River dike we observed surface salinity variations in three stations along the estuary channel in May 1998 and July 1997 and surface temperature and salinity along the ferry-route between Kunsan and Changhang during eighteen days in July 1999. Based upon the typical features of observed salinity variation, we analyzed the excursion and decay processes of the discharged water. When freshwater is discharged, the low-salinity water forms strong salinity front over the entire estuary width, which basically moves forth and back by tidal modulation along the channel, producing the sudden change of surface salinity with the front passage. Salinity distribution along the channel, which is deduced from time variation of mean salinity over the estuary width, after one tidal period from gate operation suggests that diluted low-salinity water is trapped to the front and surface salinity increases gradually toward the upstream region. This frontal distribution of salinity is interpreted to be produced by the sudden gate operation supplying and stopping of freshwater within about two hours. Daily repeat of freshwater discharge produces separation (double front) or merge between decaying and new-generated fronts depending on dike-gate opening time, and the front decays with salinity increasing if the freshwater supply is stopped more than two days. In addition, the observed fluctuations and deviations in surface salinity variation is explained in terms of the differences of fronts intensity, their transition time and temporal salinity front running along the channel, which can be generated due to artificial gate-operation for the discharging time and water volume in the estuary dike.
