  • Ferromanganese dust is an oxide substance of Mn. If imprities are removed and oxidation degree is controlled, the dust can be recycled for soft ferrite materials. The ferromanganese dust contained about 7 kinds of impurities, expecially about 9000 ppm of $SiO_2$ contents of the ferromanganese dust from 9000 ppm to under 500 ppm by fritting method. The $SiO_2$ in ferromanganese dust can be converted into water soluble compounds by alkali fritting and removed by water leaching. KOH and NaOH were used. The most effective conditions to get rid of $SiO_2$ from the dust are that the weight ratio of alkali to ferromanganese dust is 1.75 and fritting is run at $550^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour.

  • The physico-chemical nature of the rare earth oxide which was produced by the caustic fritting of monazite was studied to furnish fundamental data that are required for its efficient use and processing. It was found that the material which was mainly constituted of light rare earths and thorium was a solid solution phase of oxide whose structure was fluorite-type face centered cubic. Its density was 6.75 g/$cm^3$ and it had a uniform particle size distribution at around 1 ${\mu}m.$ The crystallinity improved by heating to elevated temperatures, whereas the solubility in HCl decreased as the crystallinity improved. Complete dissolution in conc. HCl solution in short time (30 min.) was attained by heating to 70$^{\circ}C$. The measurement of zeta potential showed its I.E.P. to be at pH 8.6 of the suspension.

  • In this study, treatment conditions for monazite concentrate in Hong-Cheon area deposit were studied with NaOH fritting decomposition and HCl leaching experiments. At condition of NaOH fritting decomposition, it was appropriate to adopt particle size of -200 mesh monazite, reaction temperature of about $460^{\circ}C$ and NaOH/TREO mole ratio of 6. In case of HCl leaching for decomposed product, it was appropriate to use hydrochloric acid of above 8N with leaching temperature of above $80^{\circ}C$, leaching time of 2 hrs and pulp density of about 10%. A rate of decomposition and leaching for monazite was above 90% under optimum conditions. Sodium phosphate compound was effectively recovered from NaOH decomposed solution, and mixed rare earth chloride solution was prepared with HCl leaching of decomposed product.
