  • The frictional behaviors of Cermets/Cr-Ceramics and Cu-Al coatings of piston ring were investigated. Friction tests were carried out by pin-on-disk test and materials properties of coating layer were analyzed by nano indentation tester. The effect of surface roughness of cylinder liner on the friction coefficient was analyzed. This study provided tribological data of hard and soft piston ring coatings against cylinder liner. The surface roughness does exert an influence on the average friction coefficient, with smoother surfaces generally yielding lower friction coefficients. In case of hard-coating, the scratch depth, width and pile-up height had close relationship with hardness. So the scratch width, depth and pile-up height increases with decreasing friction coefficient. But in case of soft-coating, the friction coefficients are strongly dependent on the morphological characteristics such as, scratch depth, width, pile-up height and elastic modulus.

  • High velocity of oxy-fuel (HVOF) thermal spray coating is progressively replacing the other classical hard coatings such as chrome plating and ceramic coating by the classical methods, since the very toxic $Cr^{6+}$ ion is well known as carcinogen causing lung cancer, and the ceramic coatings are brittle. Co-alloy T800 powder is coated on the Inconel 718 substrates by the HVOF coating procesess developed by this laboratory. For the study of the possibility of replacing of chrome plating, the wear properties of HVOF Co-alloy T800 coatings are investigated using the reciprocating sliding tester with a counter sliding SUS 304 ball both at room and at an elevated temperature of $1000^{\circ}F\;(538^{\circ}C)$. The possibility as durability improvement coating is studied for the application to the high speed spindles vulnerable to frictional heat and wear. Wear mechanisms at the reciprocating sliding wear test are studied far the application to the systems similar to the sliding test such as high speed spindles. Wear debris and frictional coefficients of T800 coatings both at room and at an elevated temperature of $538^{\circ}C$ are drastically reduced compared to those of non-coated surface of Inconel 718 substrates. Wear traces and friction coefficients of both coated and non-coated surfaces are drastically reduced at a high temperature of $538^{\circ}C$ compared with those at room temperature. These show that the coating is highly recommendable far the durability Improvement coating on the surfaces vulnerable to frictional heat and wear.

  • Accurate peak response estimation of a seismically excited structure with frictional damping system (FDS) is very difficult since the structure with FDS shows nonlinear behavior dependent on the structural period, loading characteristics, and relative magnitude between the frictional force and the excitation load. Previous studies have estimated the peak response of the structure with FDS by replacing a nonlinear system with an equivalent linear one or by employing the response spectrum obtained based on nonlinear time history and statistical analysis. In case that earthquake excitation is defined probabilistically, corresponding response of the structure with FDS becomes to have probabilistic distribution. In this study, nonlinear time history analyses were performed for the structure with FDS subjected to artificial earthquake excitation generated using Kanai-Tajimi filter. An equation for the probability density function (PDF) of the displacement response is proposed by adapting the PDF of the normal distribution. Coefficients of the proposed PDF are obtained by regression of the statistical distribution of the time history responses. Finally, the correlation between the resulting PDFs and statistical response distribution is investigated.

  • Various hybrid dampers have been developed in Korea to control the vibration due to a wind and earthquake. In order to minimize the installment space, cost and construction process, the new hybrid friction damper is developed. This hybrid damper is composed of several rotary friction components having two frictional joint. Because of these components, the building vibration due to wind and earthquake can be mitigated by hybrid friction damper. In this paper, various dependency tests were carried out to evaluate on the structural performance of two joint rotational friction component of the hybrid damper. Test results show that two joint rotational components do not depend on a displacement and a frequency of forcing but friction coefficients is reducing as a clamping force is increasing.

  • Low alloy heat resistant brake disk and sintered brake pad are applied to mechanical brake system for the speed-up of urban rapid transit. In this research, we analyzed how the frictional characteristics between brake disk and pad are influenced by the disk mass. At a high disk mass, the friction stability was the lower value as a result of the lack of tribofilm formation at the disk surface. Wear rates of friction materials showed the higher value at a low disk mass and wear rates of 10 mm and 15 mm showed the similar level. Average friction coefficient was the lower value at the 10 mm disk thickness and range of variation of average friction coefficient was also the smaller value at the 10 mm disk thickness. However, there were no significant changes in the friction coefficients under any of test conditions. Surface roughness of a disk showed the highest value at the 5 mm disk and surface roughnesses of 10 mm and 15 mm showed the similar level. As a result, friction characteristics of disk mass influenced the friction stability, as well as the wear rate of friction pad and disk, but not the friction coefficient.

  • The high-temperature material properties of steel are very important to the fire resistance analysis of high-strength bolt connections. This paper reports on the results of the experimental studies on the high-temperature properties of 20 MnTiB steel which is widely used in high-strength bolts, and the friction coefficient of 16Mn steel plates at elevated temperature which is a necessary parameter for bolted frictional connection analysis. The test data includes yield strength, limit strength, modulus of elasticity, elongation and expansion coefficient of 20MnTiB steel at elevated temperature, and the friction coefficients between two 16Mn steel plates under elevated temperatures and after cooling. Based on the data from the tests, the mathematical models for predicting the mechanical properties of 20MnTiB steel and friction coefficients of 16Mn steel plates have been established.

To manufacture these products, micro machining that can make a high aspect ratio part and has good accuracy is widely researched. In this paper, cutting characteristics were analyzed in micro machining using cutting force coefficients, which are the specific cutting force for normal and frictional direction of rake surface. From measured cutting force in micro end milling, cutting condition independent cutting force coefficients were determined and used for analysing the characteristics of micro cutting. • The dry sliding tribological characteristics were investigated using SiC particle-reinforced aluminum composites against semi-metallic frictional materials. The experimental results have indicated that, whether under the condition of continuous braking or not, the wear rates of SiC particle reinforced composites are much less than that of gray cast iron which is used as one of the common brake disk materials. At the same time, their frictional coefficients are about the same.

  • The frictional characteristics of natural rubber plates under various conditions including sliding speed, contacted ball size, and lubrication conditions were evaluated experimentally. The frictional force and the normal force were measured by a self-made tester pin and a load cell with strain gages. In the lubrication condition, the effect of sliding speed was not significant over tested speed range. But in the none-lubrication condition, according to increase the sliding speed, the friction coefficient was decreased. The coefficients of friction under various lubrication conditions were varied from 0.03 to 0.32 and under none-lubrication condition was varied from 2.54 to 4.74.
