Friction springs have different characteristics while loading and un-loading. Because of these characteristics, they are utilized in impact systems. In this paper, the design of a recoil system with friction springs for use in a machine gun system has been presented. In order to determine the stiffness of a friction spring, equations of motion for a simple gun model with a recoil system have been derived. The impulse balance scheme has been adopted. On the basis of simulation results, the diameter of the friction spring has been determined.

This paper is a study on using gas springs for reduced friction in the elevation of the large television stand. Target is applied to the operation of the elevation over 50-inch television that uses a gas spring. Gas seal lip technology is needed for development acting on the piston rod in order to obtain a reduction in friction in elevation operation. In order to acting on the gas seal lip technology, the improved friction force can be obtained through the inner diameter of gas seal lip, the design of cutting angle and the changes of material.
A spring tension control device is used as a very important part of an twister system. The friction force of tensioner must keep same friction force during winding in package. For satisfy this function, many device used common compression coil spring. In this paper, by using the case-building technique which was based on simple theory that unknown design variables are induced by given input design variables by the designer, design automation algorithm about rectangular section compression springs with elastic characteristic is developed. Four design equation are justified in using of analysis of torsion of straight bar of rectangular section and geometrical condition of coil spring. Four design equation and nine design variables are computed by case-building technique.
The lattice-spring-based synthetic rock mass model (LS-SRM) technique has been extensively employed in large open-pit mining and underground projects in the last decade. Since the LS-SRM requires a complex and time-consuming calibration process, a robust approach was developed using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to optimize the calibration procedure. For this purpose, numerical models were designed using the Box-Behnken Design technique, and numerical simulations were performed under uniaxial and triaxial stress states. The model input parameters represented the models' micro-mechanical (lattice) properties and the macro-scale properties, including uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), elastic modulus, cohesion, and friction angle constitute the output parameters of the model. The results from RSM models indicate that the lattice UCS and lattice friction angle are the most influential parameters on the macro-scale UCS of the specimen. Moreover, lattice UCS and elastic modulus mainly control macro-scale cohesion. Lattice friction angle (flat joint fiction angle) and lattice elastic modulus affect the macro-scale friction angle. Model validation was performed using physical laboratory experiment results, ranging from weak to hard rock. The results indicated that the RSM model could be employed to calibrate LS-SRM numerical models without a trial-and-error process.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of two different styles of mechanical implant torque wrenches before and after sterilization and repeated use. Materials and methods: Thirty new spring-style and friction-style mechanical implant torque wrenches from five different manufacturers were selected as subjects of study and assessed in terms of accuracy. Three manufacturers produced, spring-style (Dio, Neobiotech, Osstem) torque wrenches, and other three manufactures produced friction-style (Dentium, Osstem, Shinhung) torque wrenches. The procedure of target torque measurement was performed 10 times for each device and a digital torque gauge (MGT-12, Mark-10 Corp, USA) was used to record the measurements. All torque wrenches were used repeatedly for 20 times and then sterilized. This whole procedure was repeated 100 times and all torque wrenches were retested. The collected data was analyzed using a SPSS Statistics Analysis program to evaluate the accuracy of the torque wrenches and Mann-Whitney-U test was used for a comparative analysis. Results: After sterilization and repeated use procedure, results did not show any significant difference between error values in the spring-style torque wrench group. However, the results demonstrated an increase in error values within the friction-style torque wrench group (P<.05). Conclusion: There was no difference between the accuracy of new spring-style torque wrenches before and after 100 cycles of sterilization and repeated use (P>.05). There was significant difference between the accuracy of new friction-style torque wrenches before and after 100 cycles of sterilization and repeated use (P<.05). Within the limitation of this study, spring-style torque wrenches were more accurate than friction-style torque wrenches in delivering target torque values.
Ground in extremely cold and hot regions can sink by various environmental factors. Ground settlement can generate the negative skin friction to pile shaft, increase the base load of pile, and cut the stability of the pile. This study proposed a member responding ground deformation which can be inserted inside the pile. The member slightly compresses according to the ground settlement to reduce the negative skin friction. As the member materials, this study considered spring and spring-dashpot. To assess the ability of the member, the present research performed model tests for piles with or without the member within settled ground. In the model tests, the base load, total shaft resistance, and horizontal earth pressure were monitored and analyzed. Experimental results show that the pile with spring member can reduce the negative skin friction under small settlement conditions whereas it acts similar to the pile without the member under large settlement conditions as the spring was no longer compressed. However, the pile with the spring-dashpot member can reduce the negative skin friction continuously upon the ground settlement as the dashpot delays the load transfer to the spring and locates friction force on the unloading path.

The dynamic model of a high-speed vacuum circuit breaker mechanism with spring-actuated cam and linkage is derived to simulate the high-speed closing and opening operations. Its validation for an analysis of high-speed motion behavior is checked through experiments. The characteristics of the friction on the camshaft are investigated using the nonlinear pendulum experiment. The parameters of the friction model are estimated using the optimization technique. The analysis exhibits that the friction of the pendulum depends on stick-slip, Stribeck effect and viscous damping. Comparing simulation results with actual responses using a high-speed camera, the appropriateness of derived dynamic models for the rapid closing and opening operations is shown. The spring motion, which has much influence on the closing responses, is observed.
The paper presents the dynamic instability of a disc brake pad subjected to distributed friction forces. A brake pad can be modeled as a beam with two translational springs. The study of this prototypical model is intended to provide a fundamental understanding of disc brake pad instabilities. Governing equations of motion are derived form energy expressions and their corresponding solutions are obtained by employing the finite element method. The critical distributed friction force and the instability regions are demonstrated by changing two translational spring constants. Finally, the changes of eigen-frequencies of a beam determining instability types are investigated for various combinations of two spring constants.
In this study, the width spreads of spring steel including Mn-Cr steel(SUP 9A), Mn-Cr-V steel(SUP 11A), and Si-Cr steel(SAE 9254) and were investigated under different reduction ratios and thickness-width ratios friction coefficients. The experimental results were compared with the theoretical prediction by the Ekelund equation, Geuze equations, etc. The width spreads of the three spring steels were found to be 10-15% larger than mild steel, and the optimal reduction ratio for the spring steel was found in a range from 20 to30%. Among the spring steels, the width spread of Mn-Cr-V steel was measured to be the largest followed by those of Si-Cr steel and Mn-Cr steel. It was found that the width spread increased with friction coefficient, width-thickness ratio and reduction ratio as predicted. However, the theoretical predictions revealed smaller width spread than the experimental results. This finding indicates that the coefficients of the width spread of the theoretical models need to be modified in order to predict the actual behavior of the width spreading of the spring steels. In this study, the coefficients of width spread of the Geuze equation were determined from the experimental results.

In this paper, the factors affecting the dynamic characteristics of a polyurethane spring restoring disk bearing are analysed to predict the dynamic behavior of the bearing. The prediction results and the test results are compared. The Young's modulus of the polyurethane spring, which varies according to strain of spring and the friction coefficient, of PTFE (PolyTetraFluoroEthylene), which varies according to the velocity and pressure of PTFE, are considered as the factors influencing the dynamic characteristics. W-PTFE virgin products are used and polyurethane springs are produced for the tests. The equation related to changing the friction coefficient and the modulus of elasticity are obtained through an inverse estimation of the test results. The estimation results, considering the factors affecting the dynamic characteristics, simulate the test results more appropriately than the estimation without the consideration of those factors.
