The need for developing a mathematical model for pad-pivot friction in tilting pad proceeding bearings has been well-recognized, since previous experimental work about the performances of the bearings hypothesized that the friction in the bearings is closely related to their performances. Especially, the sliding friction between pad and pivot in the ball and socket type of the bearings can influence the performance of the bearing. We propose a mathematical model for pad-pivot friction in the ball and socket type, which considers the geometrics of the pad and pivot of the bearings, by assuming the sliding friction in the ball and socket bearing as Coulomb friction. By utilizing the proposed model for pad-pivot friction, we show the analysis of Reynolds equation and energy equation, which explain the thermo-hydrodynamic characteristics of tilting pad proceeding bearings, by taking into account the turbulence and inlet pressure building as well. The results of the study show that the performance of titling-pad proceeding bearings can be greatly influenced by the pad-pivot friction. In particular, we have shown that the analysis of the pad-pivot friction is useful to explain the static proceeding loci and the dynamic characteristics of the ball and socket type of the bearings. Furthermore, for a given operating condition, we can obtain various equilibrium states which satisfy the static equilibrium conditions, by considering the pad-pivot friction.
To stop a high speed train running at the speed of 300 km/h, the disc brake for the train should be able to dissipate enormous kinetic energy of the train into frictional heat energy. Sintered pin-type metals are mostly used for friction materials of high speed brake pads. A pad comprises several friction pins, and the topology, length, flexibility, composition, etc. have a great influence on the tribological properties of the disc brake. In this study, the topology of the friction pins in a pad was our main concern. We presented the optimization of the topology of a railcar brake pad with nine-pin-type friction materials by thermo-mechanical contact analysis. We modeled the brake pad with/without a back plate. To simulate a continuous braking, the pad or friction materials were rotated at constant velocity on the friction surface of the disc. We varied the positions of the nine friction materials to compare the temperature distributions on the disc surface. In a non-optimized brake pad, the distance between two neighboring friction materials in the radial direction from the rotational center of the disc was not equal. In an optimized pad, the distance between two neighboring friction materials in the radial direction was equal. The temperature distribution on the disc surface fluctuated more for the former than the latter. Optimizing the pad reduced the maximum temperature of the brake disc by more than 10%.
Drag torque reduction in a wet clutch pack is a key aspect of the design process of the dual clutch transmission (DCT) system. In order to reduce the drag torque caused by lubricant shear resistance, recently developed wet clutch pack systems of DCT, as well as automatic transmission and other four-wheel drive (4WD) couplings, frequently utilize wavy wet clutch pads. Therefore, wavy shape of friction pad are made on the groove patterns like waffle pattern for the reduction of drag torque. Additionally, the groove patterns are designed with larger channels at several locations on the friction pad to facilitate faster outflow of lubricant. However, channel performance is a function of the waviness of the friction pad at the location of the particular channel. This is because the discharge sectional area varies according to the waviness amplitude at the location of the particular channel. The higher location of the additional channel on the friction pad results in a larger cross-sectional area, which allows for a larger flow discharge rate. This results in reduction of the drag torque caused by the shear resistance of DCTF, because of marginal volume fraction of fluid (VOF) in the space between the friction pad and separator. This study computes the VOF in the space between the friction pad and separator, the hydrodynamic pressure developed, and the shear resistance of friction torque, by using CFD software (FLUENT). In addition, the study investigates the dependence of these parameters on the location and waviness amplitude of the channel pattern on the friction pad. The paper presents design guidelines on the proper location of high waviness amplitude on wavy friction pads.

The friction characteristics of Al-Fe alloy powders are investigated in order to develop an eco-friendly friction material to replace Cu fiber, a constituent of brake-pad friction materials. Irregularly shaped Al-Fe alloy powders, prepared by gas atomization, are more uniformly dispersed than conventional Cu fiber on the brake pad matrix. The wear rate of the friction material using Al-8Fe alloy powder is lower than that of the Cu fiber material. The change in friction coefficient according to the friction lap times is 7.2% for the Cu fiber, but within 3.8% for the Al-Fe alloy material, which also shows excellent judder characteristics. The Al-Fe alloy powders are uniformly distributed in the brake pad matrix and oxide films of Al and Fe are homogeneously formed at the friction interface between the disc and pad, thus exhibiting excellent friction and lubrication characteristics. The brake pad containing Al-Fe powders avoids contamination by Cu dust, which is generated during braking, by replacing the Cu fiber while maintaining the friction and lubrication performance.
Using the finite element method, the film pressure, the transverse force and the firction torque which are distributed over the pad surface of low-friction piston skirt are calculated in order to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the piston. The results indicate that the frictional torque for the low-friction piston pad may increase 3% efficiency in comparison th the conventional one.

The brake squeal propensity due to the friction-velocity curve is numerically investigated. The finite element models for the disc and pad are correlated with the modal test. In the friction-engaged system modeling, the friction function is linearized at the equilibrium. The damping term induced by friction-velocity slope is incorporated into the equations of motion. In the complex eigenvalue analysis, it is found that the pad shear mode is very sensitive to the friction curve. The results shows that the squeal propensity of the pad shear mode can be controlled by the design parameters such as pressure and stiffness.
The pressure distribution between the piston pad and the cylinder wall is analyzed to reduce the friction and to get the dynamic stability in the low friction piston. The calculated results indicate that the rectangular pad may reduce the friction in comparison to the square one. And the low friction piston can be stabilized when the pressure difference between the top and bottom of the piston skirt is very small.
The paper presents the dynamic instability of a disc brake pad subjected to distributed friction forces. A brake pad can be modeled as a beam with two translational springs. The study of this prototypical model is intended to provide a fundamental understanding of disc brake pad instabilities. Governing equations of motion are derived form energy expressions and their corresponding solutions are obtained by employing the finite element method. The critical distributed friction force and the instability regions are demonstrated by changing two translational spring constants. Finally, the changes of eigen-frequencies of a beam determining instability types are investigated for various combinations of two spring constants.
Low alloy heat resistant brake disk and sintered brake pad are applied to mechanical brake system for the speed-up of urban rapid transit. In this research, we analyzed how the frictional characteristics between brake disk and pad are influenced by the disk mass. At a high disk mass, the friction stability was the lower value as a result of the lack of tribofilm formation at the disk surface. Wear rates of friction materials showed the higher value at a low disk mass and wear rates of 10 mm and 15 mm showed the similar level. Average friction coefficient was the lower value at the 10 mm disk thickness and range of variation of average friction coefficient was also the smaller value at the 10 mm disk thickness. However, there were no significant changes in the friction coefficients under any of test conditions. Surface roughness of a disk showed the highest value at the 5 mm disk and surface roughnesses of 10 mm and 15 mm showed the similar level. As a result, friction characteristics of disk mass influenced the friction stability, as well as the wear rate of friction pad and disk, but not the friction coefficient.
Frictional heat greatly influences the friction behaviors during clutch engagement. Therefore, the engagement of a wet or dry clutch is frequently not under control by the frictional heat. In a wet clutch, the frictional temperature also specially needs to be controlled, and in many cases, the clutch material is selected to prevent a temperature rise from the friction between friction pad and separator. However, only the selection of the clutch material cannot ensure sufficient control of the temperature rise by the friction. The groove pattern on a friction pad is designed for more flow rates of transmission fluid between the contact gap of clutch pad and separator for the cooling effect. In this work, grove patterns are designed for more flow rates out of the contact gap between friction pad and separator plate. Selected groove design shows the improvement flow rates of transmission fluid through both inner and outer radius, where most of the transmission fluid flows through the outer radius when the clutch is engaged due to the centrifugal force in conventional wet clutch groove. Several comparisons of the amounts of frictional heat generated on clutch pads are made in order to verify the decrease of the temperature rise according to the flow rates along the groove patterns.
