In this paper, the cutting torque of a CNC machine tool during machining is monitored through the internet. To estimate the cutting torque precisely, the spindle driving system is divided into two parts: electrical induction motor part and mechanical part. A magnetized current is calculated from the measured three-phase stator currents and used for the total torque estimation generated by a spindle motor. Slip angular velocity is calculated from the magnetized current directly, which gets rid of the necessity of a spindle speed sensor. Since the frictional torque changes according to the cutting torque and the spindle rotational speed, an experiment is adopted to obtain the frictional torque as a function of the cutting torque and the spindle rotation speed. Then the cutting torque can be calculated by solving a $2^{nd}$ order difference equation at a given cutting condition. A graphical programming method is used to implement the torque monitoring system developed in this study to the computer and at the same time monitor the torque of the spindle motor in real time through the internet. The cutting torque of the CNC lathe is estimated well within an about $3\%$ error range in average in various cutting conditions.

Monitoring sediment loads in natural rivers is the key process in river engineering, but it is costly and dangerous. In practice, suspended loads are directly measured, and total loads, which is a summation of suspended loads and bed loads, are estimated. This study proposes a real-time sediment discharge monitoring system using the horizontal acoustic Doppler current profiler (H-ADCP) and support vector regression (SVR). The proposed system is comprised of the SVR model for suspended sediment concentration (SVR-SSC) and for total loads (SVR-QTL), respectively. SVR-SSC estimates SSC and SVR-QTL mimics the modified Einstein procedure. The grid search with K-fold cross validation (Grid-CV) and the recursive feature elimination (RFE) were employed to determine SVR's hyperparameters and input variables. The two SVR models showed reasonable cross-validation scores (R2) with 0.885 (SVR-SSC) and 0.860 (SVR-QTL). During the time-series sediment load monitoring period, we successfully detected various sediment transport phenomena in natural streams, such as hysteresis loops and sensitive sediment fluctuations. The newly proposed sediment monitoring system depends only on the gauged features by H-ADCP without additional assumptions in hydraulic variables (e.g., friction slope and suspended sediment size distribution). This method can be applied to any ADCP-installed discharge monitoring station economically and is expected to enhance temporal resolution in sediment monitoring.

Process gas piping is one of the most basic components frequently used in the refinery and petrochemical plants. Many kinds of by-product gas have been used as fuel in the process plants. In some plants, natural gas is additionally introduced and mixed with the byproduct gas for upgrading the fuel. In this case, safety or design margin of the changed piping system of the plant should be re-evaluated based on a proper design code such as ASME or API codes since internal pressure, temperature and gas compositions are different from the original plant design conditions. In this study, series of piping stress analysis were conducted for a process piping used for transporting the mixed gas of the by-product gas and the natural gas from a mixing drum to a knock-out drum in a refinery plant. The analysed piping section had been actually installed in a domestic industry and needed safety audit since the design condition was changed. Pipe locations of the maximum system stress and displacement were determined, which can be candidate inspection and safety monitoring points during the upcoming operation period. For studying the effects of outside air temperature to safety the additional stress analysis were conducted for various temperatures in $0{\sim}30^{\circ}C$. Effects of the friction coefficient between the pipe and support were also investigated showing a proper choice if the friction coefficient is important. The maximum system stresses were occurred mainly at elbow, tee and support locations, which shows the thermal load contributes considerably to the system stress rather than the internal pressure or the gravity loads.

The variations of the surface topographical parameters for the analysis of the pedestrian slip and fall accidents during the sliding friction between the specially prepared floor specimens and three working shoes were investigated. The profile ordinate data for each flooring specimen were obtained at 1.1 .mu.m intervals using a laser scanning confocal microscope system along to the direction of sliding. A number of surface roughness parameters, that is, the centre line average (c.l.a.) and root mean square (r.m.s.) roughness, maximum height (Rtm), maximum mean peak height (Rpm), maximum mean depth (Rvm), and average asperity slope were calculated using a computer program and compared with the dynamic friction results. The analysis showed that the surface parameters undergo marked variations during the sliding process, but the variations were statistically significant. It was found that amongst various surface parameters, the maximum depth (Rvm) and the average asperity slope of the asperities were the biggest variation during the sliding proceeding. This result confirms the previous study and may suggests a new approach to monitoring the flooring environments with their service as the effort to reduce the pedestrain slip accident.
SU-8 is an epoxy-type photoresist widely used for the fabrication of high-aspect-ratio (HAR) micro-structures in micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). To fabricate highly integrated structures, chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) has emerged as the preferred manufacturing process for planarizing the MEMS structure. In SU-8 CMP, an oxidizer decomposes organic impurities and particles in the CMP slurry remove the chemically reacted surface of SU-8. To fabricate HAR microstructures using the CMP process, the adhesion between SU-8 and substrate material is important to avoid the delamination of the SU-8 film caused by the mechanical-dominant material removal characteristic. In this study, the friction force during the CMP process is measured with a CMP monitoring system to detect the delamination phenomenon and investigate the delamination of the SU-8 film from the silicon substrate under various pressure conditions. The increase in applied pressure causes an increase in the frictional force and wafer-edge stress concentration. The frictional force measurement shows that the friction force changes according to the delamination phenomenon of the SU-8 film, and that it is possible to monitor the delamination phenomenon during the SU-8 CMP process. The delamination at a high applied pressure is explained by the effect of stress distribution and pad deformation. Consequently, it is necessary to control the pressure of polishing, which can avoid the delamination in SU-8 CMP.

In order to solve the problem of the existing gate it developed the solar energy gate. The solar energy gate quotient a friction force from the area contact which will call improved with line contact and it diminished. Because of the result, The operation power of the gate came to be small and the small-sized of the motor was possible. From the small-sized of the motor, the solar energy system introduction was possible and the expense for the production establishment of the gate was diminished. From KRC in 2005 demonstration it establishes the solar energy gate in nationwide 50 places and characteristic the monitoring efficiently.

In this paper, using Zigbee-based wireless sensor networks and Lego MindStorms NXT robot, a remote monitoring and navigation system for mobile robot has been developed. Mobile robot can estimate its position using encoder values of its motor, but due to the existing friction and shortage of motor power etc., error occurs. To fix this problem and obtain more accurate position of mobile robot, a ultrasound module on wireless sensor networks has been used in this paper. To overcome disadvantages of ultrasound which include straightforwardness and narrow detection coverage, we rotate moving node attached to mobile robot by $360^{\circ}$ to measure each distance from four fixed nodes. Then location of mobile robot is estimated by triangulation using measured distance values. In addition, images are sent via a network using a USB Web camera to smart phone. On smart phones we can see location of robot, and images around places where robot navigates. And remote monitoring and navigation is possible by just clicking points at the map on smart phones.

Uses of geosynthetics as a reinforcing material for earth structures have ever increased due to their excellent economy. fine external appearance. and easy construction. In the current practice of geosynthetics. however, the lacks of the standardized method of evaluating the soil/geosynthetics friction properties and the inconsistency of conventional design methods develop confusion to the civil engineers. The purpose of site monitoring of the retaining wall reinforced by geogrids was to evaluate the applicability of existing design methods to, and performance of. CHAMSTONE wall system. Full scale field performance during and after construction was monitored by incorporating instrumentation including strain gauges on the geogrid and soil pressure cells. The difference of the reinforcing effects of geosynthetics embedded in the soil will be also investigated by comparing of the line and curve types of retaining wall reinforced by geogrids with block type facings.

This study developed low-cost and high-efficiency pavement condition monitoring technology to produce the key information required for pavement management. A noise and artificial intelligence-based monitoring system was devised to compensate for the shortcomings of existing high-end equipment that relies on visual information and high-end sensors. From idea establishment to system development, functional definition, information flow, architecture design, and finally, on-site field evaluations were carried out. As a result, confidence in the high level of artificial intelligence evaluation was secured. In addition, hardware and software elements and well-organized guidelines on system utilization were developed. The on-site evaluation process confirmed that non-experts could easily and quickly investigate and visualized the data. The evaluation results could support the management works of road managers. Furthermore, it could improve the completeness of the technologies, such as prior discriminating techniques for external conditions that are not considered in AI learning, system simplification, and variable speed response techniques. This paper presents a new paradigm for pavement monitoring technology that has lasted since the 1960s.
STEPSTONE is a joint industry-university project to create open source technology that would enable the scalable, "friction-free" integration of device-based healthcare solutions into enterprise systems using a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Specifically, STEPSTONE defines a first proposal to a Service Oriented Device Architecture (SODA) framework, and provides for initial reference implementations. STEPSTONE also intends to encourage a broad community effort to further develop the framework and its implementations. In this paper, we present SODA, along with two implementation proposals of SODA's device integration. We demonstrate the ease by which SODA was used to develop an end-to-end personal healthcare monitoring system. We also demonstrate the ease by which the STEPSTONE system was extended by other participants - Washington State University - to include additional devices and end user interfaces. We show clearly how SODA and therefore SODA devices make integration almost automatic, replicable, and scalable. This allows telehealth system developers to focus their energy and attention on the system functionality and other important issues, such as usability, privacy, persuasion and outcome assessment studies.
