  • To establish a thermodynamic basis for degradation, a hypothesis was made on the potential correlation between entropy and degradation for wear of machinery components. This paper reports an experimental study of wear of model machinery component pairs, on an accelerated testing basis. Measured were wear, friction, temperatures, and entropy flow. Results show a strong correlation between the referenced wear and the production of entropy flow. The hypothesis linking wear to entropy led to formulations consistent with the Archard/Holm wear law.

  • A rigid-viscoplastic finite element code for superplastic forming processes has been developed The material is assumed to be isotropic and a modified Coulomb friction law is adopted to explain contact between tool and sheet. This code uses the triangular element based on the membrane approximation and a hierarchical contact searching method is implemented The optimum pressure-time relationships for target strain rate are calculated by several pressure control algorithms. By the analysis, optimum pressure-time curves and deformation behavior are predicted.

  • In this study, a cycle simulation program of a Unit-Injection(UI) system was developed to estimate the injection performance of newly designed injection system. A fundamental theory of the simulation program is based on the conservation law of mass. Loss of fuel mass in the system due to leakage, compressibility effect of the liquid fuel and friction loss in the control volume was considered in the algorithm f the program. For the evaluation of the simulation program developed, the experimental result which was offered by the Technical Research Center of Doowon Precision Industry Co. was incorporated. Two main parameters; the maximum pressure in the plunger chamber and total fuel mass(kg) injected into the engine cylinder per cycle, were measured and compared with the simulation results. It was found that the maximum error rate of the simulation result to the experimental output was less than 3% in the rated rotational speed (rpm) range of the plunger cam.

  • Considerable interest has evolved in the flow of non-Newtonian fluids in channels of noncircular cross section in compact heat exchanges. Analytical solution was developed for prediction of the flow rate and maximum velocity in steady laminar flow of any incompressible, time-independent non-Newtonian fluids in straight closed and open channels of arbitrary, but axially unchanging cross section. The geometric parameters and function of shear describing the behavior of the fluid model were evaluated for fluid flow among a bundle of rods arranged in triangular and square array. Numerical values of dimensionless maximum velocities, mean velocities, pressure-drop-flow parameters and friction factors were evaluated as a function of porosity and pitch-to-radius ratio.

  • In this study, using the governing equation for thermohydrodyamic lubrication involving the homogeneous mixture of incompressible fluid derived by based on the principle of continuum mechanics, it is discussed the effects of water within engine oil on the performance of high speed journal bearing of a turbocharger. The governing equations are the general equations being able to be applied on the mixture of Newtonian fluid and non- Newtonian fluid. Here, the fluid viscosity index, n of power-law non-Newtonian fluid is supposed to be 1 for the application of the journal bearing in a turbocharger lubricated with the mixture of two Newtonian fluid, for example, water within engine oil. The results related with the bearing performance are shown that the bearing friction is to decrease and the side leakage and bearing load increase as increasing the water content in an engine oil.

  • This paper proposes virtual-magnetic system by a force-reflecting interface to drive a ultrasonic motors(USMs) To approach virtual magnet in graphic the 6 dDOF force-reflecting interfaces provides force feedback to users as if I is magnetic-force, So users can feel real magnet Effectively to display the magnetic-force we need the interface with specific characteristics such as low inertia almost zero friction and very high stiffness As an actuator for the interface the USMs have many good advantage satisfied these conditions over conventional servo motors. To estimate capability of this virtual-magnetic system we did an experiment of magnetism based on coulomb's law when Coulmb's low apply this experiment it is vey conformable to real magnet

  • A robust position control with the bound function of neural network structure is proposed for uncertain robot manipulators. The uncertain factors come from imperfect knowledge of system parameters, payload change, friction, external disturbance, and etc. Therefore, uncertainties are often nonlinear and time-varying. The neural network structure presents the bound function and does not need the concave property of the bound function. The robust approach is to solve this problem as uncertainties are included in a model and the controller can achieve the desired properties in spite of the imperfect modeling. Simulation is performed to validate this law for four-axis SCARA type robot manipulator.

  • This work is focused on the boundary layer and heat transfer characteristics of hydromagnetic flow over a stretching sheet with variable thickness. Steady, two dimensional, nonlinear, laminar flow of an incompressible, viscous and electrically conducting fluid over a stretching sheet with variable thickness and power law velocity in the presence of variable magnetic field and variable temperature is considered. Governing equations of the problem are converted into ordinary differential equations utilizing similarity transformations. The resulting non-linear differential equations are solved numerically by utilizing Nachtsheim-Swigert shooting iterative scheme for satisfaction of asymptotic boundary conditions along with fourth order Runge-Kutta integration method. Numerical computations are carried out for various values of the physical parameters and the effects over the velocity and temperature are analyzed. Numerical values of dimensionless skin friction coefficient and non-dimensional rate of heat transfer are also obtained.
