Linear motion (LM) ball guides with rolling contact are core units of feed-drive systems. They are widely applied for precision machinery such as machine tools, semiconductor fabrication machines and robots. However, the friction force induced from LM ball guides generates heat, which deteriorates positioning accuracy and incurs changes of stiffness and preload. To accurately analyze the effects and apply the results to precision machine design, mathematical modeling of the friction force is required. In this paper, accurate formulation of the friction force due to rolling, viscous, and slip frictions is conducted for LM ball guides. To verify the reliability of the developed friction model, experiments are performed under various assembly, load and velocity conditions. Effects of frictional components are analyzed through the formulated friction model.

The conventional medium and large caliber gun, in general, utilize the hydro-pneumatic recoil mechanism to control the firing impulse and to return to the battery position. However, this kind of mechanism may cause the problems like the leakages and the property changes in oil and gas due to the temperature variations between low and high temperatures. Accordingly, the friction spring mechanism has recently been researched as an alternative system. The friction spring mechanism consists of a set of closed inner and outer rings with the concentric tapered contact surfaces assembled in the columnar form, and can only be used under the compression load. When the spring column is axially loaded, the tapered surfaces become overlapped, causing the outer rings to expand while the inner rings are being contracted in diameter allowing an axial displacement. Because of friction between tapered contact surfaces, much higher spring stiffness is obtained on the stroke at the increase in load than the stroke at the decrease. In this paper, the dynamic equations regarding the friction spring system and the design approach have been investigated. It is also tried for a dynamic model representing the recoil motion and the friction spring forces. And the model has been proved from firing test using a gun system with friction springs. All the results show that the recoil mechanism using friction springs can substitute for the classic hydro-pneumatic recoil system.
The article presents a theoretical-experimental approach developed for modeling the coefficient of sliding friction in the dynamic system tool-workpiece in slide diamond burnishing of low-alloy unhardened steels. The experimental setup, implemented on conventional lathe, includes a specially designed device, with a straight cantilever beam as body. The beam is simultaneously loaded by bending (from transverse slide friction force) and compression (from longitudinal burnishing force), which is a reason for geometrical nonlinearity. A method, based on the idea of separation of the variables (time and metric) before establishing the differential equation of motion, has been applied for dynamic modeling of the beam elastic curve. Between the longitudinal (burnishing force) and transverse (slide friction force) forces exists a correlation defined by Coulomb's law of sliding friction. On this basis, an analytical relationship between the beam deflection and the sought friction coefficient has been obtained. In order to measure the deflection of the beam, strain gauges connected in a "full bridge" type of circuit are used. A flexible adhesive is selected, which provides an opportunity for dynamic measurements through the constructed measuring system. The signal is proportional to the beam deflection and is fed to the analog input of USB DAQ board, from where the signal enters in a purposely created virtual instrument which is developed by means of Labview. The basic characteristic of the virtual instrument is the ability to record and visualize in a real time the measured deflection. The signal sampling frequency is chosen in accordance with Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem. In order to obtain a regression model of the friction coefficient with the participation of the diamond burnishing process parameters, an experimental design with 55 experimental points is synthesized. A regression analysis and analysis of variance have been carried out. The influence of the factors on the friction coefficient is established using sections of the hyper-surface of the friction coefficient model with the hyper-planes.
Recently, the manufacturing of micro-cavity by means of laser surface texturing (LST) technique and low friction study by the LST have been in great progress. Most of current works have been dealing with the effect of cavity on friction and wear. The main objective of the present study was to investigate numerically two-dimensional lubrication characteristics of micro-dimple shapes fabricated on solid surfaces, and this study utilized the commercial CFD code (Fluent V.6.3). For the evaluation, preliminary simulation was conducted and numerical predictions were compared with the analytic solution obtained from the Reynolds's equation. Mainly, the present study investigated the influence of dimple depth, pattern shapes, and film thickness on lubrication characteristics related to the reduction of friction. It is found that the existence of micro-dimpled surface makes it possible to substantially reduce the friction forces exerted on the surfaces. In particular, substantial decrease in shear stresses was observed as the lubricant film thickness decreases. For instance, in the case of the film thickness of 0.01 mm, the estimated shear stress decreases up to about 40%. It indicates that the film thickness would be important factor in designing the micro-dimpled surfaces. Furthermore, it was observed that such a optimum dimple depth would be present because the dimple depth larger than the optimum value did no longer affect the reduction in shear stresses.
In North America, a large number of concrete old slab-on-steel girder bridges, classified noncomposite, were built without any mechanic connections. The stablizing effect due to slab/girder interface contact and friction on the steel girders was totally neglected in practice. Experimental results indicate that this effect can lead to a significant underestimation of the load-carrying capacity of these bridges. In this paper, the two major components-concrete slab and steel girders, are treat as two deformable bodies in contact. A finite element procedure with considering the effect of friction and contact for the analysis of concrete slab-on-steel girder bridges is presented. The interface friction phenomenon and finite element formulation are described using an updated configuration under large deformations to account for the influence of any possible kinematic motions on the interface boundary conditions. The constitutive model for frictional contact are considered as slip work-dependent to account for the irreversible nature of friction forces and degradation of interface shear resistance. The proposed procedure is further validated by experimental bridge models.

Recently construction activities increase in reclaimed onshore areas. It is therefore considered an important factor for the design of pile foundation with problems in terms of settlements due to soft grounds. Nevertheless the design of piles for negative skin friction(or downdrag forces) is probably poorly understood by many engineers. It is mainly because the most of design specification give a way to design pile foundation in bearing capacity aspect although the negative skin friction is related to settlement(downdrag). Under LRFD(load resistance factor design) approach it is to separately consider ultimate limit state and serviceability limit state. This paper discusses LRFD approach to the design of piles for negative skin friction and compares this approach to traditional design approach. And also a case history is analyzed in that point of view.

Most accident reconstruction or analysis depend on the coefficient of friction to estimate the vehicle speeds. Skid mark and coefficient of friction are usually utilized to calculate the velocity and behavior of vehicles. For a critical case such as traffic accident reconstruction, however, the initial velocity of the car should be calculated precisely. In this paper, emergency brake tests on ABS and Non-ABS brake system are conducted on the dry pavement asphalt road on speed 40, 60, 80 and 100 km/h respectively. The SWIFT sensor was established in the front wheel and rear wheel at driver side to measure the forces, moments and speeds of revolution of the tires. These tests results can be available to brake tests and accident reconstruction.
Recently drastic improvement of railway technology has been accompanied by the construction of very high-speed tracks. It should be noticed that Continuously Welded Rail(CWR) has played significant role in technical development of railway and that installation of CWR is now being scheduled on existing lines as well as newly-built lines. In general, interaction between CWR and bridge deck takes place on bridge section and additional axial force and displacement is to be developed owing to temperature and braking/acceleration forces. This interaction is known to be mainly governed by span organizations and arrangements of foot bearings. In common practice, movable bearing is stationed and designed on the assumption that it is not able to transfer the horizontal force of upper decks. However, it is well known that horizontal resistance is developed in movable bearings due to friction and that friction coefficient of movable bearing is ranged from 0.03 to 0.20 depending on the material of bearings and magnitude of reactions. Therefore, it is easily reasoned out that friction of movable bearing can influence the mutual behavior of CWR and bridge decks. Suggested in this study is to investigate the validity and efficiency of friction effect of movable bearings in controlling the axial force and displacement of CWR on continuous railway bridges.
This paper investigated the negative skin friction acting on the model piles driven in the cylindrical chamber filled with remolded marine clay. In model tests, three load cells were installed on the model piles consisting of three parts to measure the negative skin friction forces independently. Pore pressures and ground movements were monitored throughout the period of investigation. Finite element analysis was used to simulate the behavior of a model pile. This paper describes the comparison of the behavior of negative skin friction on the single model pile with a numerical analysis by CRISP.
This study deals with the numerical investigation on two-dimensional lubrication characteristics of micro-dimple shapes fabricated on solid surfaces by using the commercial CFD code (Fluent V.6.3) to examine the influence of micro dimple depth and width on the reduction in friction under the sliding plate condition. In addition, single and multiple dimple arrays are simulated, all for a fixed area fraction of dimple on the surface. As a result, it is found that the existence of micro-dimpled surface makes it possible to substantially reduce the friction forces exerted on the surfaces, and such an optimum dimple depth would be present because the dimple depth larger than the optimum value did no longer affect the reduction in shear stresses, indicating that the reduction of friction is likely to be associated with inner flows of lubricant inside dimples. Moreover, it is observed that at the fixed area fraction, the friction reduction increases with the increase of dimple diameter.
