  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the friction coefficients between abutment materials and clasp materials, and to an estimation formula for retention force. The coefficients of friction between three clasp materials and four abutment materials were measured under various conditions, polished and sandblasted and wet and dry. The measurement was repeated for each combination up to a total measurement of 1200 times. Estimation formula for retention force is measured as sum of two terms, which the one time is proportional to the product of friction coefficient ${\mu}$ and undercut u and the other term is proportional to u-squared. Two proportional coefficient were obtained by least square method. The results are as follows: 1. Friction coefficients were ranged from 0.08 to 0.53 under various conditions. 2. Friction coefficients of non-metal abutment materials are greater in wet conditions than dry conditions. 3. Friction coefficients of sandblasted clasp against abutment are greater than that of polished clasp. 4. Clasp retention force can be estimated with the model as F=$F_d(3.0{\mu}u+1.5u^2/h)$ with minor error.

  • The modeling and parameter estimation of a damped one-degree-of-freedom mass-spring system is examined. This paper presents a method for estimating the system parameters (damping coefficients and natural frequency) from measured free-vibration motion of a system that is modeled to include both subcritical viscous damping and kinetic Coulomb friction. The method applies a commercially available least-squares curve-fitting software function to fit the known solution of the equations of motion to the measured response. The method was tested through numerical simulation, and it was applied to experimental data collected from a laboratory mass-spring apparatus. The mass of this apparatus translates on linear bearings, which are the primary source of light inherent damping. Results indicate that the curve-fitting method is effective and accurate for both perfect and noisy measurements from a lightly damped mass-spring system.

  • This paper introduces a method to estimate the contact-force of the leg of a walking robot and proposes a solution to a shortcoming of the previous study. This shortcoming was the deteriorating performance when estimating the contact-force whenever the rotation of each joint was reversed. It occurred because the friction-torque of each joint was not considered. In order to solve this problem, a friction-torque model for a robot leg was developed based on repetitive experimentation and used to improve the contact-force estimation performance. We verified the performance of the proposed method experimentally.

  • The research of friction compensation control system seeks the accuracy, the velocity increase of the table, and the settling time reduction. The friction is the disturbance which has the greatest influence, but the past research of control system doesn´t perform exact modeling of the friction. So this research aims at the friction compensation control system, the exact modeling of the friction, comparison between the model simulation and experimental data, and the design of observer for the friction estimation.

  • In this paper, Time Delay Control(TDC) for robot manipulators is analyzed and its problems are founded. In order to remedy the problems, the enhanced controller is proposed and analyzed. The effect of friction associated with TDC is reported and its cause is presented. Through the analysis, simulation and experiment, it is shown that the friction effect causes serious degradation in control performance and that it is a result of the error of Time Delay Estimation(TDE) in TDC. In order to remedy the problems, TDC combined with Internal Model Control(IMC) concept is proposed. The proposed compensator is effective enough to handle the bad effect of friction, and is so simple and efficient as to match positive attribute of TDC. The simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness of proposed controller against the friction of the robot manipulators.

  • In this paper real-time estimation methods for identifying the tire-road friction coefficient are presented. Taking advantage of the Magic Formula Tire Model, the similarity technique and the specific model for the vehicle dynamics, a reduced order observer/filtered-regressor-based method is proposed. The Proposed method is evaluated on simulations of a full-vehicle model with an eight state nonlinear vehicle/transmission model and nonlinear suspension model. It has been shown through simulations that it is possible to estimate the tire-road friction from measurements of engine rpm, transmission output speed and wheel speeds using the proposed identification method. The proposed method can be used as a useful option as a part of vehicle collision warning/avoidance systems and will be useful in the implementation of a warning algorithm since the tire-road friction can be estimated only using RPM sensors.

  • Grid(pipe network) design is an important element of Smart Water Grid, which essential to estimate hydraulic parameters such as the pressure, friction factor, friction velocity, head loss and energy slope. Especially, friction velocity in a grid is an important factor in conjunction with energy gradient, friction coefficient, pressure and head loss. However, accurate estimation friction head loss, friction velocity and friction factor are very difficult. The empirical friction factor is still estimated by using theory and equation which were developed one hundred years ago. Therefore, in this paper, new equation from maximum velocity and friction velocity is developed by using integration relationship between Darcy-Weisbach's friction head loss equation and Schlichting equation and regression analysis. To prove the developed equation, smooth pipe data areis used. Proposed equation shows high accuracy compared to observed data. Study results are expected to be used in stability improvements and design in a grid.

  • Pin-on-disk and hardness tests using mechanical components of M-20J aircraft braking system were performed to identify the friction and wear characteristics. The intention of this work was also to analyze a 5-year term maintenance record of an M-20J aircraft. used for flight training at Hankook Aviation University, and to determine the reliability of the brake system of an M-20J aircraft. The mean wear coefficients of the lining sliding against the brake disk were compared between the test and reliability estimation to obtain a predictive wear model.
