  • The occurrence of progressive collapse induced by the removal of the vertical load-bearing element in the structure, because of fire or earthquake, has been a significant challenge between structural engineers. Progressive collapse is defined as the complete failure or failure of a part of the structure, initiating with a local rupture in a part of the building and can threaten the stability of the structure. In the current study, the behavior of the structures equipped with a cylindrical friction damper, when the vertical load-bearing elements are eliminated, is considered in two cases: 1-The load-bearing element is removed under the gravity load, and 2-The load-bearing element is removed due to the earthquake lateral forces. In order to obtain a generalized result in the seismic case, 22 pair motions presented in FEMA p 695 are applied to the structures. The study has been conducted using the vertical push down analysis for the case (1), and the nonlinear time-history analysis for the second case using OpenSEES software for 5,10, and 15-story steel frames. Results indicate that, in the first case, the load coefficient, and accordingly the strength of the structure equipped with cylindrical friction dampers are increased considerably. Furthermore, the results from the second case demonstrate that the displacements, and consequently the forces imposed to the structure in the buildings equipped with the cylindrical friction damper substantially was reduced. An optimum slip load is defined in the friction dampers, which permits the damper to start its frictional damping from this threshold load. Therefore, the optimum slip load of the damper is calculated and discussed for both cases.

  • This paper deals with the numerical model of a bracing-friction damper system and its deployment using the optimal slip load distribution for the seismic retrofitting of a damaged building. The Slotted Bolted Connection (SBC) type friction damper system was tested to investigate its energy dissipation characteristic. Test results coincided with the numerical ones using the conventional model of a bracing-friction damper system. The placement of this device was numerically explored to apply it to the assumed damaged-building and to evaluate its efficiency. It was found by distributing the slip load that minimizes the given performance indicies based on structural response. Numerical results for the damaged building retrofitted with this slip load distribution showed that the seismic design of the bracing-friction damper system under consideration is effective for the structural response reduction.

  • Various hybrid dampers have been developed as increasing tall buildings in Korea. To minimize the installment space and cost, the new hybrid friction damper was developed using friction components. It is composed of two one-nodal rotary frictional components and a slotted bolted frictional connection. Because of these components, hybrid friction damper can be activated by building movements due to lateral forces such as a wind and earthquake. In this paper, displacement amplitude dependency tests were carried out to evaluate on the structural performance and the multi-slip mechanism of the hybrid damper. Test results show that the multi-slip mechanism is verified and friction coefficients are increasing as displacement amplitudes are increasing.

  • Most washing machines are now produced as a drum-type, where a washing drum mounted on a suspension system with springs and dampers, to minimize the transmittance of the vibration from the drum to the frame. A low-cost MR damper, using magneto-rheological fluids, can produce variable damping forces by changing the current values in the magnetic coil. Experimental results show the comparison of the vibration attenuation performances between two different dampers. One test set-up uses a passive damper and another one uses a MR fluid damper. The test results showed that the vibration amplitude of the washing machine with the MR damper is much smaller than the case with the passive damper.

  • Building structures generally have inherent low damping capability and hence are vulnerable to seismic excitations. Control devices therefore play a useful role in providing safety to building structures subject to seismic events. In recent years semi-active dampers have gained considerable attention as structural control devices in the building construction industry. Magneto-rheological (MR) damper, a type of semi-active damper has proven to be effective in seismic mitigation of building structures. MR dampers contain a controllable MR fluid whose rheological properties vary rapidly with the applied magnetic field. Although some research has been carried out on the use of MR dampers in building structures, optimal design of MR damper and combined use of MR and passive dampers for real scale buildings has hardly been investigated. This paper investigates the use of MR dampers and incorporating MR-passive damper combinations in building structures in order to achieve acceptable levels of seismic performance. In order to do so, it first develops the MR damper model by integrating control algorithms commonly used in MR damper modelling. The developed MR damper is then integrated in to the seismically excited structure as a time domain function. Linear and nonlinear structure models are evaluated in real time scenarios. Analyses are conducted to investigate the influence of location and number of devices on the seismic performance of the building structure. The findings of this paper provide information towards the design and construction of earthquake safe buildings with optimally employed MR dampers and MR-passive damper combinations.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present a design procedure of coulomb friction dampers for controlling elastic and inelastic responses of building structures. The equivalent damping and frequency increased by the friction damper are estimated using ATC-40 and ATC-55 procedures which provide equivalent linear system for bilinear one, and then a design formula to achieve target performance response level by friction damper is presented. It is identified that there exists error between the responses obtained by this formula and by performing nonlinear analysis and the features of the error vary according to the hardening ratio, yield strength ratio, and structural period. Equations for compensating this er개r are reposed based on the least square method, and the results from numerical analyses indicate that the error is significantly reduced, and the proposed formula can be used without much error for designing coulomb friction damper for retrofitting a structure showing elastic or inelastic behavior.

  • This study dealt with investigating the seismic performance of the smart and shape memory alloy (SMA) and magnets plus rubber-spring (MRS) dampers and their effects on the seismic resistance of multiple-span simply supported bridges. The rubber springs in the MRS dampers were pre-compressed. For this aim, a set of experimental works was performed together with developing nonlinear analytical models to investigate dynamic responses of the bridges subjected to earthquakes. Fragility analysis and probabilistic assessment were conducted to assess the seismic performance for the overall bridge system. Fragility curves were then generated for each model and were compared with those of as-built. Results showed dampers could increase the seismic capacity of bridges. Furthermore, from system fragility curves, use of damper models reduced the seismic vulnerability in comparison to the as-built bridge model. Although the SMA damper showed the best seismic performance, the MRS damper was the most appropriate one for the bridge in that the combination of magnetic friction and pre-compressed rubber springs was cheaper than the shape memory alloy, and had the similar capability of the damper.

  • Approximate analysis for a building installed with a friction damper is performed to get insight of its dynamic behavior. Energy balance equation is used to have a closed analytical form solution of dynamic magnification factor(DMF). It is found out that DMF is dependent on friction force ratio and resonance frequency. Approximation of DMF and equivalent damping ratio of a friction damper is proposed with such assumption that the building with a friction damper shows harmonic steady-state response and narrow banded response behavior near resonance frequency. Linear transfer function from input external force to output building displacement is suggested from the simplified DMF equation. Root mean square of a building displacement is derived under earthquake-like random excitation. Finally, design procedure of a friction damper is proposed by finding friction force corresponding to target control ratio. Numerical analysis is carried out to verify the proposed design procedure.

  • In this study, the possibility of applying the damping devices to shear-wall dominant apartment buildings(SDA) was examined. In order to achieve research objectives, ASCE/SEI 7-10 design procedure for structures with damping systems applied to four representative apartment buildings which are under design or previously designed with the shear-wall dominant system, and the performances of damping devices were investigated. It is shown that in order to secure the seismic performance of SDA by using dampers, the stiffness of the dampers should be very large because of the effects of shear walls with the high elastic stiffness. But since this large stiffness is highly difficult to implement in reality, prudent decisions have to be made in designing the SDA with damping system and friction dampers with the high initial stiffness are more effective than hysteretic steel dampers.

  • For the aeroelastic analysis of a wing with friction damping, coupled time integration method was used to obtain time responses in the subsonic and transonic regions. To take into account aerodynamic nonlinearity induced by shock wave on the lifting surface, transonic small disturbance equation with in-phase periodic boundary condition was used for unsteady aerodynamic calculation. For 2-DOF airfoil system with displace-dependent friction dampers, the effects of normal load slope and Mach number on flutter boundary were investigated.
