Carbon fiber polymeric composites have been widely used in bearing materials under high pressure without oil-lubrication due to their self-lubricating characteristics. However, the severe wear of carbon composite surface occurs due to the generation of wear debris when the pressure applied on the composite surface is higher than the critical value of composite surface. In this work, in order to remove wear debris continuously during sliding operation, composite specimens with many micro-grooves on their sliding surfaces were devised. To investigate the effect of wear debris on the tribological behavior of carbon/epoxy composites, dry sliding tests were performed with respect to applied pressure using the composite specimens with and without micro-grooves. From the measurement of friction coefficients and wear rates, a model for the effect of wear debris on the friction and wear of composites was proposed.
In the present study, the residual stresses can have a significant on the life of structural engineering components. Residual stresses are created by the surface treatment such as shot peening or deep rolling. The objective of this experimental investigation is to study the influence of friction and wear characteristics due to residual stress under dry sliding condition. Friction and wear data were obtained with a specially designed tribometer. Test specimens were made of SUP9 (leaf spring material) after they were created residual stress by shot peening treatment. Residual stress profiles were measured at surface by means of the Xray diffraction. Sliding tests were carried out different contact pressure and same sliding velocity 0.035 m/s (50 rpm). Leaf spring assembly test used to strain gauge sticked on leaf spring specimen in order to measure interleaf friction of leaf spring. Therefore, we were obtained hysteresis curve. As the residual stresses of surfaces increased, coefficient of friction and wear volume are decreased, but the residual stresses of surfaces are high, and consequently wear volume do not decreased. Coefficient of friction obtained from leaf spring assembly test is lower than that obtained from sliding test. From the results, structural engineering components reduce coefficient of friction and resistant wear in order to have residual stresses themselves.
PTFE is generally utilized as the form of composites with adding various fillers. The purpose of this paper lies on clarifying the friction and wear properties of the PTFE coating layer on steel. Especially, the effects of PTFE powder size for coating and surface roughness of the counter material on the properties are investigated. Sliding friction and wear tests are conducted at several sliding speeds by employing two types of PTFE coating layer using different powder sizes. One type of coating layer is composed of uniform fine powder, whereas the other type is made up of mixture powder of different sizes. As results, it is found that PTFE coating layer are effective to improve the wear resistance and to reduce the friction coefficient. It is clear that PTFE coating layers are abrasively removed by asperities of the counter material during sliding contact. However, PTFE coating layer with uniform fine powder shows somewhat better wear resistance than that with mixture powder of different sizes in low sliding speed region. It can be seen that the wear of the coating layer are drastically reduced because wear fragment from counter material are transferred to the coating layer. On the other hand, friction coefficient is shown not to be directly related with PTFE powder size in coating layer.

In this study, we investigated the effects of copper and copper-alloy on the frictional and wear properties of low-steel friction material. The proportions of copper and copper-alloy in the brake friction materials used in passenger cars are very high (approximately 5-20% weight), and these materials have significant effects on friction and wear characteristics. In this study, the effects of cupric ingredients, such as the copper fiber and brass fiber, are investigated using the friction materials based on commercial formulations. After the copper and brass fibers from the same formulation were removed, the frictional and wear characteristics were evaluated to determine the influence of the copper and copper-alloy. We evaluated the frictional and wear characteristics by simulating various braking conditions using a 1/5 scale dynamometer. The results show that the friction material containing copper and brass fibers have excellent frictional stability and a low wear rate compared to the friction material that does not contain copper and brass fibers. These results are attributed to the excellent ductility, moderate melting point, high strength, and excellent thermal conductivity of copper and copper-alloy. We analyzed the surfaces of the friction materials before and after the performing the friction tests using a scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope, confocal microscope, and roughness tester to verify the frictional behavior of copper and copper-alloy. In future studies, it will be applied to the development of copper-free friction materials based on the results of this study.
Present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of composition ratio and temperature on the friction and wear of PTFE-polyimide composites under the atmosphere of nitrogen gas. The load range was 0.62-3.46 MPa, and the temperature range was room temperature and 200$^{\circ}$C. To mention some of the notable results, friction coefficient of PTFE 100% varied relatively little within the given load and temperature ranges. Polyimide 100% showed the lowest friction coefficient of 0.06 at 200$^{\circ}$C among all the experiments. PTFE 80%-polyimide 20% showed the lowest wear factors on the whole. Friction coefficient of PTFE 20%-polyimide 80% varied from the highest 0.35 to the lowest 0.09 among all the materials at room temperature, and showed almost the same lowest values with polyimide 100% at 200$^{\circ}$C. Suggestion of friction and wear mechanisms of the materials was tried to explain the observed phenomena including above mentioned results.

Friction and wear behavior of MoS$_{2}$ bonded films were evaluated at a Block-on-Ring typed tribo-tester, and their properties were compared with those of Falex tester in terms of the wear life of the films. Test results showed that friction and wear properties were significantly affected by the test methods of different contact configuration, and the wear life at a Block-on-Ring type tribo-tester was mostly governed by the resin binder. To obtain long wear life of the films, various combinations of solid-resin-content ratio and chemical resin modification were attempted and evaluated. Adhesion properties of resin binders were also measured and compared by using a scratch tester.

Friction and wear at ceramic coated surfaces of aluminum alloy were experimentally studied using a Ring-on-Block wear test machine. Ceramic materials coated on aluminum alloy surfaces were WC, CrC, $Al_{2}O_{3}$ by a plasma spray; and $Al_{2}O_{3}$,$Al_{2}SiO_{5}$, $Na_{2}B_{4}O_{7}$,$Na_{4}P_{2}O_{7}$, and $Al_{2}O_{3}-ZrO_{2}$ composite coating by an Anodic Spark Depositon. They were tested under the sliding wet contact and compared with aluminum alloys and steels. Test results showed that ceramic coated surfaces, in general, have better anti-wear property than those of aluminum alloys due to increase in the surface hardness ; however, they also showed higher coefficients of friction and changes in wear mechanisms, resulting in brittle fractures.

Wear debris can be collected from the lubricants of operating machinery and its morphology is directly related to the fiction condition of the interacting materials from which the wear particles originated in lubricated machinery. But in order to predict and estimate working conditions, it is need to analyze the shape characteristics of wear debris and to identify. Therefore, if the shape characteristics of wear debris is identified by computer image analysis and the neural network, The four parameter (50% volumetric diameter, aspect, roundness and reflectivity) of wear debris are used as inputs to the network and learned the friction. It is shown that identification results depend on the ranges of these shape parameters learned. The three kinds of the wear debris had a different pattern characteristic and recognized the friction condition and materials very well by neural network. We resented how the neural network recognize wear debris on driving condition.

Friction and wear behavior of a unidirectional high modulus carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite exposed to high and low humidity was experimentally examined with various sliding speeds. The results show that the moisture at the sliding surface greatly influences friction and wear properties of the composite. It is also discoverd that the difference in friction and wear behavior between samples with different fiber orientations is mainly due to the anisotropic properties caused by the microstructure of oriented graphite crystals in the carbon fibers and the macrostructure of fiber orientation in the matrix.
