  • It is to use effectively for stream channel and watershed management as the prediction and the analysis of bed changes characteristics in the Seomjin river downstream. The necessary data (section, bed composition material, pivot point water elevation, coefficient of roughness) with regard to analysis of the bed changes characteristics were based upon the survey data and analysis results in the Seomjin river maintenance basic plan. The prediction of bed changes was also completed with HEC-6 model. The study results were summarized as follows: The main factor of bed changes in the Seomjin river downstream can be decided by extreme extraction of bed aggregate rather than the change of hydrological data. According to the analysis of bed stability based on the relation between friction velocity and representative grain size, and the relation between dimensionless tractive force and representative grain size, the Seomjin river downstream appears to be increased overall. The bed composition material in the stream channel of the Seomjin river of 2003 year shows higher composition rate of gravel and lower composition rate of sand as compared to those of 1989 year. According to result that the prediction of bed changes, it is estimated that the bed will be risen approximately 1.5 m to the place up to 9 km from the estuary, have been repetitively risen and fallen up to 1 m to the place between $9{\sim}21\;km$ section, and fallen about 0.5m to the place between $22{\sim}25\;km$ section. As a result, the bed of the Seomjin river downstream can be decided to be risen gradually. However, since the prediction of this study is based on the assumption that there will be no forced aggregate picking, the bed changes can be much greater than expected when there is a massive aggregate picking as it had happened before.

  • There are increasing use of composite resin in the posterior teeth and the new indirect inlay technique was introduced for compensating much troubles faced in direct technique. Many researchers insisted that overall properties of restorative materials were enhanced by an additional curing but this technique still has a problems about using cement material. Resin inlay obtains retention force from friction and another adhesion to tooth structure. A shape of cavity preparation was noted but studies about cement thickness and bond strength with cavity divergency are rare. The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of cavity divergency on cement thickness and bond strength of resin inlay. Cavities, which divergency was $6^{\circ}$, $16^{\circ}$, and $26^{\circ}$ in each group, were prepared and their divergency was verified by Adobe Photoshop program through the image capture with stereo microscope and FlexCam. Inlays were fixed into the cavities with a resin cement, Superbond and were handled under chemical (in 75% ethanol for 24 hrs.) and thermal stress (500 cycles from $5^{\circ}$ to $55^{\circ}C$). MXT 70 (x400) was used for measuring the cement thickness and bond strength was evaluated with a universal testing machine. Following results were obtained : 1. The cement thickness in Mean (S.D.) were; 35.58 (10.31)${\mu}m$ in $6^{\circ}$ group, 35.97 (10.49)${\mu}m$ in $16^{\circ}$ group, and 41.43 (9.33)${\mu}m$ in $26^{\circ}$ group. But there was no significant difference between groups. 2. The bond strength in Mean (S.D.) were ; 33.18 (5.53)kg in $6^{\circ}$ group, 23.47 (13.40)kg in $16^{\circ}$ group, and 19.75 (10.48)kg in $26^{\circ}$ group. $6^{\circ}$ group showed significantly higher value compared to $16^{\circ}$ and $26^{\circ}$ groups (p<0.05). Although the results of this study indicate $6^{\circ}$ divergency will be good for resin inlay, cavity preparation with this type will have lots of difficulties in manufacturing, try-in, and cementation procedures, such as deformation. So it is concluded that $16^{\circ}$ divergent cavity preparation is recommended in resin inlay technique.

  • In order to develop a high performance ocean model, we used Julia, a Just-In-Time compile language, and to obtain the solution of the momentum equation, we made the code to solve the Poisson equation by the Successive Over-Relaxation method. And then we made two models to test Julia calculation codes. First, a simple channel form is modeled to test constant source/sink conditions. Second, the simplified Yellow Sea was modeled to test tidal forcing, Coriolis forces, and the effect of vertical eddy diffusivity coefficients. The model has been tested with a total of eight cases in the two scenarios. As a result of the test, the depth-averaged current speed of the three cases in Scenario 1 converged perfectly to the theoretical value, and that showed well a vertical flow velocity gradient due to the bottom friction. Also, the result of Scenario 2 represented well the amphidromic points of Yellow Sea and the tidal characteristics of mid-western and southwestern coast of Korea. Therefore, it is considered that the ocean model using Julia language has developed successfully, this suggests that the ocean model has come to the stage of successful transition from a classical compile language to a Just-In-Time compile language.

  • This paper presents a braking model that can be used to design the safety distance of a train control system and a train braking system to increase the volume of traffic. For the braking model, a train set (electric multiple unit composed 6 cars) was tested. The factors that can affect the braking characteristics include the friction coefficient, braking pressure, and regenerative braking. The braking pressure was classified into service and emergency braking and reflected the characteristics of the vehicle. The external force acting on the running railway car was tested in accordance with KS R 9217, and the running resistance of the train is presented in the form of a polynomial. The dynamic behavior of the train running on a straight flat line was simulated using UM 8.3. The results were validated with experimental data, and the results were reasonable. With the validated model, a stopping distance was determined according to the initial braking speed and compared with the deceleration braking model. In addition, a safety distance for the train control system could be changed according to the frictional coefficient limits. These results are expected to be useful for analyzing the dynamic behavior of trains, and for analyzing various railway environments and improving the braking performance.

  • The IMO has adopted emission standards through Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) that strictly prohibit the use of bunker C oil for vessels. In this study, we have adopted the turret-moored Floating LNG-Bunkering Terminal (FLBT) which is designed to receive the LNG from LNGCs and transfer it to LNG-bunkering shuttles in side-by-side moored condition. Numerical analyses were carried out using the high-order boundary-element method for four vessels at various relative distances. Mean wave drift forces were compared in an operational sea state. A model test was performed in the ocean engineering basin at the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) to verify the safety of the berthing/unberthing operation. In the model test, a jig was designed to simulate tug boats pushing or pulling the bunkering vessels, so that the friction force of the g operation was not affected. Safety depended on the environmental direction, with more stable operation possible if the heading-control function of FLBT is applied to avoid beam-sea conditions.

  • This study investigated the enhanced combustion efficiency of an "air-cooled combustion system" with single F.D. fan, and performed a numerical analysis for the operation and design conditions to increase the combustion efficiency. The combustion efficiency in an actual combustor was compared before and after the structure modification. Numerical analysis for application of a single fan revealed the difficulty of forming a turbulence for circular combustion conditions. This is because the supply ratio of combustion air supplied into 2 flow paths becomes irregular in the combustion furnace due to a change in friction force and pressure in each flow path. Subsequently, two methods of supplying air into the combustion furnace were analyzed numerically to obtain the optimal combustion conditions of an air-cooled combustion system. The first method involved injecting the preheated combustion air after a 180~360 degree rotation from the outer wall, whereas in the second method, the combustion air was injected into the combustion furnace in a tangential direction after primary heat exchange outside the combustion furnace, by applying a rotatable vane structure in the combustion furnace. Results reveal that application of a single F.D. fan to the air injection into a rotatable combustion furnace is desirable for optimization of the combustion conditions for applying a duct structure having a dual cooling wall for the cooling of the outer wall of the combustion furnace, and for maintaining perfect mixing in the combustion furnace. We therefore confirmed enhanced combustion efficiency by comparing the actual combustion efficiency before and after structure modification.

  • As the research about increasing the efficiency of dredging soil transport, the technology, which reduce the friction between pipe wall and fluid in the pipe and disturbed generating pipe blockage, has been developed. So for the purpose of applying this technology to real construction site, main test has been tried at the real scale test in field. As a test result, this paper will show 30% flow efficiency increasing by permitted electro magnetic force to the pipe. And test result was evaluated as a ultra sonic velocity profiler. To propose the design technique and the execution manual of the high efficiency dredging material transport technic, this research have confirmed flow status changing depending on a soil material kind under electro-magnetic field and analyze the effect of electro-magnetic field which affects to each dredged soil material transportation. For achieving this research, EMF(Electro-Magnetic Field) generator is installed on the dredger(20,000HP) and through monitored flow status, dredging soil flow rate and sampled material specification is confirmed. Also dredger operating condition is measured and dredger power for soil transportation, hydraulic gradient and flow rate are compared, as transportation efficiency is calculated by this parameter, it is possible to check transportation efficiency improvement depending on each dredged soil material under electro-magnetic field. To verify the technique of dredged soil transfer using electromagnetic field, which is the core technique of the high efficiency dredged soil transfer, and the technique of expert system for pipeline transfer and the flow state. This could lead to a verification of transfer efficiency according to the characteristics of the dredged soil (sand, clay, silt) and the transfer distance (5km, 10km, 15km), which is planned to be used for a technology development of pump power reduction and long-distance transfer applying the high efficiency dredged soil transfer technology.

  • The auxiliary power unit (APU) of a rotorcraft starts the engine during operation/flying. The APU is composed of a gas turbine engine type. The starting principle of the component is that the electric start motor generates the power required for starting by rotating the shaft. In this study, quality improvement was performed by applying an over-running clutch (ORC) between the APU and the starter motor to secure the operability of the starter motor of the APU mounted on the rotorcraft. The starter motor has the main role of starting the APU, but during operation, it is rotated without load by the rotational force of the APU gear shaft, resulting in friction at the brush. This phenomenon causes abrasion of the brush of the starter motor. Consequently, when the APU operation time increases, the brush life decreases, and the operability of the APU is affected. In this study, an ORC that separates the interlocking between the start motor brush abrasion and the APU operation time was applied to improve the operability/durability of the APU starter motor. The effect was verified through a test, and the technical feasibility of the design change was analyzed.

  • Engineered mixtures, which consist of rigid sand particles and soft fine-grained rubber particles, are tested to characterize their small and large-strain responses. Engineered soils are prepared with different volumetric sand fraction, sf, to identify the transition from a rigid to a soft granular skeleton using wave propagation, $K_{o}-loading$, and triaxial testing. Deformation moduli at small, middle and large-strain do not change linearly with the volume fraction of rigid particles; instead, deformation moduli increase dramatically when the sand fraction exceeds a threshold value between sf=0.6 to 0.8 that marks the formation of a percolating network of stiff particles. The friction angle increases with the volume fraction of rigid particles. Conversely, the axial strain at peak strength increases with the content of soft particles, and no apparent peak strength is observed in specimens when sand fraction is less than 60%. The presence of soft particles alters the formation of force chains. While soft particles are not part of high-load carrying chains, they play the important role of preventing the buckling of stiff particle chains.
