Among trip distribution models, The BPR type Gravity Model is the one which is the most widely used. The key issue associated with this model is a functional form of friction factor which should be calibrated in the process, and interpretation for socioeconomic factor known as K-factor(Kij) which is used to adjust the difference between observed zone-to-zone trips and the estimated trips. In this study, the BPR type Gravity Model has been fitted to 1990 O/D data for Seoul. Two type of function form for friction factor has been employed : one is a form of Generalized function and the orther is UTP function. With above two function, the parameters for travel distance(Skin-tree) are prepared. The relationship between socioeconomic factor and trips is identified by calculating and analyzing the characteristics of Kij. Consequently, both of the friction factor functions are statistically signified. However, it show an overestimation tendency when estimated with UTP function. It is found that the Generalized function is suitable for the city of Seoul, and also, in case there are a lot of trips correlatively, the socioeconomic factor is close to 1, on the other hand if it's small, it shows a bias which is dispersed around 1.
The basic factor that affect wear performance is the wear characteristics, which come from sliding friction between rubber compound and road. Thus, this study focused on friction and wear of rubber. This paper briefly explain some characteristics of friction and wear referring to the papers on wear of rubber that scholars researched on. Research activities to predict the performance of the rubber wear is also explained.
An experimental apparatus was prepared to investigate thermal and hydrodynamic characteristics of regenerator at cryogenic temperature under pulsating pressure condition. The regenerator was pressurized and depressurized by a compressor with various operating frequencies. Cold end of the regenerator was maintained around 100 K by means of a liquid nitrogen heat exchanger. Instantaneous gas temperature and mass flow rate were measured at both ends of the regenerator during the whole pressure cycle. Pulsating pressure drop across the regenerator was also measured to see if it could be predicted by a friction factor at steady flow condition. The operating frequency of pressure cycle was varied between 3 and 60 Hz, which are typical operating frequencies of Gifford-McMahon, pulse tube, and Stilting cryocoolers. First, the measured friction factor for typical wire screen mesh regenerator was nearly same as steady flow friction factor for maximum oscillating Reynolds number up to 100 at less than 9 Hz. For 60 Hz operations, however, the discrepancy between oscillating flow friction factor and steady flow one was noticeable if Reynolds number was higher than 50. Second, the ineffectiveness of regenerator was directly calculated from experimental data when the cold-end was maintained around 100 K and the warm-end around 293 K, which simulates an actual operating condition of cryogenic regenerator. Influence of the operating frequency on ineffectiveness was discussed at low frequency range.
During warm forging, materials are formed in the temperature range of $300^{\circ}C\sim900^{\circ}C$. In this temperature range, the friction between the forging die and the material is very high and has a negative effect on the forming process causing severe die wear and possible defects in the component because of stick-slip. Thus, lubrication characteristics are a very important factor for productivity during warm forging. In this paper, ring compression experiments were conducted to estimate the friction factor between the die and the materials as the main factor in characterizing the lubricant. Also, ring tests using normal graphite power as a lubricant coating system were compared with tests using nano graphite powder. The results confirm that the nano graphite is superior to the normal graphite in view of its lubricating effect. In addition, the friction factor (m) was estimated with respect to the amount of the nano graphite content in the lubricant. With 10 % nano graphite the friction factor had the lowest value as compared to other amounts. It can be concluded that the amount of the nano graphite in the coating system can be optimized to obtain the best lubrication condition between the die and the material using ring test experiments.
In this study, friction stick-slip vibration're interpretation of the phenomenon, we used a statistical model of friction. In a previous study using a definite friction factor, but to a dynamic simulation using a constantly changing during the integration time by a Monte Carlo simulation method, not the average coefficient of friction and the dynamic friction coefficient and a constant value in this study.
An experimental study has been performed to investigate friction characteristics of pre-coated metals widely used in domestic appliances. Seven-coated sheet metals are tested by using three friction mechanism such as straight pulling, frictionless roller, and non-rotational roller with three kinds of cylindrical rollers. In this experiment, effects of friction mechanism, blank thickness, and roller diameter on friction coefficient, surface roughness, and scoring factor have been investigated From the experimental results, it has been found that tested pre-coated sheet metals have low friction coefficients ($\mu$ = 0.15~0.20) because films coated on sheets take a role of lubricants. Friction coefficients of pre-coated metals decrease with increasing roller-diameters. Surface of pre-coated metals can be improved by decreasing the blank thickness
Reputed for their low friction coefficient and wear protection effect, diamond-like carbon (DLC) materials are considered amongst the most important lubricant coatings for tribological applications. In this framework, this investigation aims to elucidate the effect of a few operating parameters, such as applied stress and sliding amplitude on the friction lifetime of DLC coatings. Fretting wear tests are conducted using a 12.7 mm radius counterpart of 52100 steel balls slid against a substrate of the same material coated with a 2 ㎛ thickness DLC. Approximately, 5 to 57 N force is applied, generating a maximum Hertzian contact pressure of 430 to 662 MPa, corresponding to the applied force. The coefficient of friction (CoF) generates three regimes, first a running-in period regime, followed by a steady-state evolution regime, and finally a progressive increase of the CoF reaching the steel CoF value, as an indicator of reaching the substrate. To track the wear scenario, interrupted tests are performed with analysis combining scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), 3D profilometer and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The results show two endurance values: one characterizing the coating failure (Nc1), and the other (Nc2) indicating the friction failure which is situated where the CoF reaches a threshold value of μth = 0.3 in the third regime. The Archard energy density factor is used to determine the two endurance values (Nc1, Nc2). Based on this approach, a master curve is established delimitating both the coating and the friction endurances.
This experimental study investigates the local heat transfer enhancement characteristics and the associated frictional head loss in the rectangular channel with a single inclined baffle. Four different types of the baffle are used. The inclined baffles have the width of 19.8 cm, the square diamond of $2.55cm{\times}2.55cm$, and the inclination angle of 5o, and number of holes of up to 9. Reynolds number is varied between 23,000 and 57,000. Results show that the heat transfer and friction factor depend significantly on the number of baffle holes and Reynolds number. The friction factor decreases with increasing Reynolds number and the number of holes on the baffle. It is found that the heat transfer performance of baffle type II(3 hole baffle) has the best values.
A comparison of fully developed heat transfer and friction factor characteristics has been made in rectangular ducts with ones roughened by five different shapes. The effects of rib shape geometries and Reynolds number are examined. The rib height-to-duct hydraulic diameter, pitch-to-height ratio, and aspect ratio of channel width to height are fixed at e/De=0.0476, P/e=8, and W/H=2.33, respectively. To understand the mechanisms of the heat transfer enhancements, the measurements of the friction factors are also conducted in the smooth and rough channels. The data indicates that the triangular type rib has a substantially higher heat transfer performance than any other ones in the range we studied.
