The ichthyofauna and passing efficiency of fishways were surveyed in Geumgang estuary from May to October in 2009. The fishes collected were classified into 24 species, 23 genera belonging to 8 families. These 24 species consist of 17 freshwater fish species, 3 migration fish species and 4 peripheral freshwater fish species. Seasonal function of fishways showed the migration from May to June and returning to the reservoir of fishes be washed out to sea when sluice gate open by rainfall in July and August. Most of the fishes catched in fishways moved from middle tide to high tide except for July. Fishes ascended fishways between the middle ebb tide and the ebb tide only July, because small freshwater swim against the fishway for leaching the reservoir through the newly formed flow when the water level at the fishway kept dropping. Small fishes that body length less than 200 mm mainly used gabion type fishways and fishes over 200 mm utilized a cascade type fishways. Based on the total individuals collected, the efficiency of the fishway was 1 % for the anadromous fish and over 80 % for freshwater fish. Therefore, it is concluded that ecological function of the fishway in the Geumgang estuary dike be very important not only for fish migration but also freshwater fishes's returning.

This study was conducted to elucidate microplastics detection of freshwater ecosystems in Geum river. Samples are collected at 6 points in freshwater, 5 points in fishes. Freshwater was sampled 100 L per each points and fish species were Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis, Hemibarbus labeo, Pseudogobio esocinus, Zacco platypus, Micropterus salmoides and Cyprinus carpio. FTIR analyis was adopted to identify microplastic types. Extracted microplastics were PES (polyester), PE (polyethylene), PP (polypropylene), PET (polyethylene terephthalate), PVC(Polyvinyl chloride) in freshwater, and PES, PE, PP, PET, PVC in fishes. Our results were expected to be used basic research information for further study in microplastics of freshwater ecosystems.
In this study, we carried out the rapid diagnostic system based on indirect fluorescent anti-body technique (IFAT) for detection of bacterial diseases in cultured freshwater fishes. 1. When the fishes were tested with graded dilution of Edwardsiella tarda FPC 470 bacteria detection from ten fishes Injected with $4.1{\times}10^3$colony forming unit(CFU) /ml, all of them were detected by IFAT but only two fishes were recognizable by the culture method in the tested fishes injected with $4.1{\times}10^3$CFU /ml. 2. The bacteria E. tarda could be detected by IFAT method from 1 to 48hrs after Injection in the tissues tested such as kidney, liver and spleen of the fishes, whereas detection by culture method could be recognized from 1 to 48hrs after injection In the kidney and spleen but it was not possible from preinjection to 1 hr in the liver. 3. Thus, IFAT proved to be more useful technique than plate culture method in the diagnosis of Edwardsiellosis in the freshwater fishes.
Argulus spp, a small group of parasitic curstaceans called Branchiura, is particularly important in freshwater acquaculture. We investigated the infection of Argulus to several different species of fishes and therapy effect of masoten. Argulus japonicus was collected from Okjeong lake, Chonbuk province and experlmen-tally infected to freshwater fishes from July to August 1998. The results were as follows ; 1. The shape of a Agulus is an oval and dorsoventrally flattened, with first maxillae and second maxillae, and four pairs of legs. 2. The size of the adult stage of A japonicus was 3.2-5.0$\times$2.3-2.9mm in female and 1.5-3.1$\times$1.6-2.9mm in male. 3. In the trial of experimental infection with A japonicus to non-scaled fishes, Parasilurus asotus and Ictalurus punctalus, were infected and some of them died after severe infection. However, A japonica was not infected at all. 4. Masoten treatment for A japonicus was effective at 0.2 ppm once a day for 3 days and parasites on the surface of fishes disappeared after five days.
The present study was undertaken to survey the infection status of Metagonimus sp. metacercariae in freshwater fishes from Tong river located in Kangwon Province, a total of 178 freshwater fishes of 11 species were collected by a fish net and traps from the end of September to early October 1998. They were brought to the laboratory and examined under a stereomicroscope after artificial digestion with pepsin-HCI solution for one hour. Ten out of eleven species of freshwater fishes examined were found to contain metacercariae of Metagonimus sp. The most frequently infected fish was Liobagrus andersoni Regan 91.7% (11 of 12 fishes), followed by Gobiobotia breviburba Mori 75.0% (6 of 8 fishes), Zacco temmincki 66.2% (49 of 74 fishes), Cobitis koreensis Kim 50.0% (1 of 2 fishes), Microphysogobio longidorsails Mori 42.9% (9 of 21 fishes), Cobitis rotundicudata Wakiya et Mori 33.3% (2 of 6 fishes), Hemibarbus longirostris 33.3% (1 of 3 fishes), Pungtungia tenuicorpus 30.0% (3 of 10 fishes), Coreoleuciscus splenddus Mori 28.6% (4 of 14 fishes), Coreoperca herri Herzeanstein 11.1% (1 of 9 fishes) respectively Metagonimus metacercariae was not found from Moroco kumgangensis Uchida of freshwater fish. The total number of Metagonimus sp. metacercariae was 81, 17, 216, 1, 14, 2, 1, 4, 10, 1, respectively. Infection rates of Metagonimus sp. in the five districts was shown as follows : Chongson-up Kyulam-ri 50.0% (12 of 24 fishes), Chongson-up Kasu-ri 34.0% (17 of 50 fishes), Shindong-up Unchi-ri 56.0% (14 of 25 fishes), Shingdong-up Kosong-ri 57.1% (20 of 35 fishes), Shingdong-up Duckchon-ri 54.5% (24 of 44 fishes) respectively. Infection rate of freshwater fish was 48.9% (87 of 178 fishes) and from the results obtained in this survey, it was confirmed that freshwater fishes from Tong river was infected with metacercariae of Metagonimus sp.
Freshwater fish fauna in Pyongchangang in which having been constructed to water supply for Chechon city was carried out to clarify the impacts of ecosystem on freshwater fish as rapid reduction of constant river flood both Sep. 25, 1994 and Oct. 7, 1994 ~ Oct. 9, 1994. It was 28 species of 21 genera on 6 Families freshwater fishes including a natural monument at and many endemic species among 6 survey stations in Pyongchang. The Pyongchang that was moved in a zigzag direction having been keep constant flood and high diversity of freshwater fishes. There was a high possibility of serious extinction on freshwater fishes as rapid reduction of constant flood in Pyongchangkang.

To understand restoration and conservation projects conducted in Korea for endangered freshwater fishes and amphibians/reptiles, information about Request for Protocols-related studies on restoration, breeding, and release were collected. Trends of studies were visualized via word clouds and VOSviewer program using a text mining technique. Analysis of restoration projects for endangered freshwater fishes elucidated that most research studies conducted to date were focused on genetics and release through captive breeding that could be classified into captive breeding and habitat environments. As for research projects related to amphibians/reptiles, monitoring projects had the highest number, followed by genetic, translocation, and monitoring studies. In addition, restoration projects for amphibians/reptiles included a large number of post-capture translocation projects. Thus, many projects were confirmed by public institutions rather than by the Ministry of Environment. Network analysis revealed that it was largely classified into capture, translocation, and Kaloula borealis. Based on these results, limitations, achievements, and challenges associated with projects conducted thus far are highlighted. Research directions for future restoration and conservation of endangered freshwater fishes and amphibians/reptiles in South Korea are also suggested.
Purpose: This study investigated the factors of C. sinensis infection among the residents in vicinity of the Nakdong River and the infection status of fishes in the stream with C. sinensis maetacercaria. Methods: Selected five regions of the Nakdong River and collected freshwater fishes from the stream to examine their metacercarial infections; and studied the status and causes of C. sinensis infection in 552 residents living within 5 kilometers from the river. Results: Among the 552 residents studied, 13.8% were infected with C. sinensis, and among 379 freshwater fishes of 20 species collected from the five regions, 41 fishes of 8 species were infected with C. sinensis metacercaria. Conclusion: In order to prevent human C. sinensis infection and transition to chronic liver ions, we need to develop and apply good programs such as continuous health education, personal hygiene improvement, active medical treatment for those infected with C. sinensis, and residents’ voluntarily stop of eating freshwater fishes in the raw state.
The infection status of freshwater fish with digenetic trematode metacercariae was examined in water systems of Hantangang and Imjingang (River), the Republic of Korea. A total of 877 (594 from Hantangang and 283 from Imjingang) fishes were examined by the artificial digestion methods. Clonorchis sinensis metacercariae were detected in 7 (1.2%) fishes (in 3 spp.) from Hantangang in Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do, and 40 (14.1%) fishes (in 7 spp.) from Munsancheon in Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do. The average densities were 1.9 and 35.6 per fish infected, respectively. Metagonimus spp. metacercariae were detected in 312 (52.5%) and 113 (39.9%) fishes from Hantangang and Imjingang, and their average densities were 47.5 and 9.6 per fish infected, respectively. Centrocestus armatus metacercariae were found in 161 (27.1%) and 70 (24.7%) fishes from Hantangang and Imjingang, and their average number per fish infected was 694 and 82, respectively. Echinostoma spp. metacercariae were detected in 50 (8.4%) and 94 (33.2%) fishes from Hantangang and Imjingang, and their average densities were 9.6 and 23.1 per fish infected, respectively. The infection status of fishes with metacercariae of Stephanoprora spp., Diplostomum spp., Clinostomum complanatum, Metorchis orientalis, and Metorchis taiwanensis were analyzed by surveyed regions. Conclusively, it was confirmed that C. sinensis metacercariae were quite commonly detected in fishes from Munsancheon but rarely from other localities, whereas the metacercariae of other digenetic trematodes were relatively prevalent in fishes from water systems of Hantangang and Imjingang in Korea.
