A study on indigenous diatoms was carried out at 71 sites during the period from April 1999 to August 2014 in marine and fresh water in Korea. Forty species of diatoms are new to Korea and they are divided into three classes, six subclasses, 13 orders, 19 families, and 28 genera. The nomenclatures, references, dimensions, specimens examined, local habitat, distribution in Korea, and photograph are reported here. The 40 species found in marine and fresh water showed speciesspecific habitats.
269 yeast strains were isolated from water samples collected from different sites in Minia governorate. These included 126 strains from fresh water, 108 strains from sewage and 35 strains from wastewater from sugar-cane factory. On the basis of 23 different physiological and morphological merkmals, the isolated strains were assigned to 16 species belonging to 11 genera. Total yeast cell counts as well as spectra of yeast species were highly variable in tested water. Total yeast cell counts ranged between $3.0{\times}10^3/l\;and\;1.8{\times}10^6/l$ for fresh water, $3.0{\times}10^4/l\;and\;3.0{\times}10^7/l$ for sewage and $1.5{\times}10^6/l\;and\;2.6{\times}10^7/l$ for wastewater from sugarcane factory. Debaryomyces hansenii, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Torulaspora delbrueckii were the dominant species in fresh water, whereas Debaryomyces hansenii, Thrichosporon beigelii, Rhodoforula mucilaginosa and Kluyveromyces marxianus were the dominant species in sewage and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Kluyveromyces marxianus and Trichosporon beigelii were the dominant species in wastewater from sugar-cane factory. Yeast human pathogens, Trichosporon beigelii, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Candida albicans were encountered in water samples indicating that water in El-Minia governorate is also polluted by some pathogenic yeasts.
We investigated the ecological characteristics of reed populations growing in Korea and tried to select reed populations showing better growth patterns in waste landfill leachate. To examine the growth characteristics, 14 reed populations from various habitats were collected. Four reed populations were from inland reclaimed habitats, 4 reed populations from brackish or salt marsh habitats, and 6 reed populations from fresh water habitats. Total plant biomass after the treatment with landfill leachate showed that Daebudo and Nanjido reed populations had the higher biomass with 3755 g DW/pot and 3305 g DW/pot, respectively. Reed populations being sampled from the higher salinity and landfill habitats had relatively higher total biomass than that of other reed populations. Especially reed populations from landfill habitats showed higher biomass. Reed populations from Songjiho and Daebudo, which were believed to have tolerance to salt stress, also showed good growth patterns. Population from the fresh water habitats exhibited relatively lower tolerance to leachate treatment compared to others. From the results, we could conclude that reed populations from Nanjido and Daebudo with higher biomass and better salt tolerance were able to good candidates for purification of waste landfill leachate.

All the taxa were recorded for the first time from this region.
The ecotypic variation of Phragmites communis Trin. was studied from Aug. 1989 to March 1992 in three populations of salt marsh, estuary and fresh water areas of the western coastal regions in Korea. The length growth and aboveground total dry weight of Phragmites communis Trin. From three habitates were measured monthly and the seeds from them collected. Chlorophyll contents, bud number and width of Phragmites communis Trin. populations after their seeds were sown in seedbeds, and the growth of seedlings according to salt contents were also determined. The results lare summarized as follows: The height and basal diameter of shoot, leaf length and width, and total dry weight of Phragmites communis Trin. were very different from each other according to their natural habitats. The bud number of seeds was increased as sample sites moved from estuary to fresh water areas and salt marsh. The but the bud diameter turned out to be in reverse proportion to the bud number. The chlorophyll content of the population from fresh water was $8.6901{\mu}g/ml$, whereas that from estuary and salt marsh was $9.61801{\mu}g/ml$ and $10.3160{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. The average length growth and total dry weight of seedlings grown at different salt contents were compared. Those of fresh water area decreased at salt contents lower than 0.5% in culture solution and those of estuary at higher than 0.5%, but the population of salt marsh was shown to be capable of sustaining itself at 1.0%. All of these results suggested that the populations of Phragmites communis Trin. in the western coastal regions of Korea have undergone ecotypic variations: fresh water type, estuary type and salt marsh type.

Shiwha Lake is an excellent example of a body of water restored from a state of heavy pollution to a cleaner and more ecological state. This paper will explore techniques and methods available to landscape planning for the creation of new migratory birds habitats in Shiwha Lake. Because Shiwha lake is located adjacent to a new industrial site on reclaimed land, any planning effort aimed at restoring bird habitats must carefully consider the existing context. This plan had 3 goals; (1) to restore the coastal environment, (2) to create a habitat for migratory birds, and (3) to administer environmental education programs. To achieve these goals, several objectives were determined and planning criteria were proposed for topology, water environment(fresh, brackish and salt water swamps), zoning(for experts and general visitors), circulations, planting and mounding. The flora and fauna of the site was surveyed, and 5 alternatives were suggested and compared in several aspects. Planting species were carefully selected considering target birds and habitat requirements. In order to increase bio-diversity of the site, the plan proposed multi-staired mounds and extensive drainage systems. Bird watching facilities with natural materials, and the remote observing system using CCTV and the internet were some of the ecological techniques recommended by the plan. The bird watching trails are divided into two different zones for experts and general visitors.
In order to study the community structure and distribution patterns of primary producers and their relations to abiotic environmental factors, phytoplankton and environmental parameter were determined during the five times from October, 1989 to July. 1990. 159 taxa of phytoplankton have been identified and the most important species group is diatom which contributes to 70.4% of the total number of species. Ratios of phytoplankton group (neritic species, fresh water species, oceanic species) clustered by habitats were 52%, 18%, 12%, respectively, suggesting study area be the typical estuarine environment which is strongly affected by both fresh water discharge and sea water penetration. Species composition could be governed by the variations of salinity. the standing stocks of primary producer in the study area vary with space and time, showing close correlation with water transparency, and exhibit relatively larger than those of other coastal regions in the Yellow Sea. Spectransies diversity also showed large variation with space and time. According to the cluster analysis, the study area could be divided into two regions (inner part and outer part): in fall and winter, outer area affected by the oceanic water, but in spring and summer, inner estuarine area heavily influenced by fresh water.
In order to study and ecotypic variation of Phragmites communis Trin., we investigated germination rates, velocities, and protein band patte군 of seeds of three population of salt marsh, estuary and fresh water areas of Muan Peninsular in southwestern coast of Korea from March, 1990 to October, 1992. The highest germination rates of seeds were observed at $25^{\circ}C$; those of population of the estuary and fresh water are were 100% and that of the salt marsh was 95%. Similar germination rates were observed from the populations of estuary and fresh water areas at $30^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$, but they decreased at $15^{\circ}C$. The onset of germination of seeds of three population was earlier $^{\circ}C$, but they decreased at $15^{\circ}C$. The onset of germination of seeds of th three populations was earlier at both $25^{\circ}C$, which was higher than those of any other areas, while that of fresh water areas was the lowest. were different; those of salt marsh and estuary decreased to 30% and 2.5%, respectively, at 3.0% of salt content, but seeds of the fresh water area did not germinate at all at the same salt content. The onset of germination was delayed in the order of the salt marsh, esturay and fresh water areas as salt content of culture solution increased. Germination of seeds from the population of salt marsh was found to begin earliest. The highest germination velocity of three populations was observed in the culture containing no salt. The germination velocity constant decreased as salt content of culture solution increased from 0.5% to 3.0%: those of the populations of the salt marsh, estuary, and fresh water areas were 9.50, 0.75 and 0.00, respectively, at the salt concentration of 3.0%. Soluble protein patterns of seedings from the three populations were analyzed by SDS-PAGE method. The results showed that protein patterns of the three populations were distinctly different qualitatively and quantitatively. The present study suggests that populations of Phragmites communis Trin. in the coast of Korea had taken ecotypic variations of habitats, i.e., fresh water, estuary, and salt marsh types, according to the salt content.

The palaemonid shrimp Exopazaemon modestus inhabits the freshwater of the Indo-West Pacific, Siberia, Manchuira, Korea, China, Taiwan (Holthuis, 1980) and is abundant in the fresh water areas of southwest of Korea. Palaemonid shrimps are adapted to a variety of habitats in freshwater, brackish and marine environments. They play important role in the ecosystem of fresh, brackish and marine waters, acting as predators feeding on algae, detritus, crustaceans and meiofauna (Bell and Coull, 1978) and in turn, as preys for fishes and other predators (Anderson, 1985). Samples were collected from benthic and subaerophytic habitats of fresh and brackish water in Korea from April 2017 to April 2018. Accordingly, three genera and seven species were newly recorded in Korea. Three unrecorded genera were Cephalothrix, Cyanophanon and Toxifilum, and seven species were Anagnostidinema pseudacutissimum, Calothrix elenkinii, Cephalothrix komarekiana, Cyanophanon mirabile, Cyanosarcina chroococcoides, Leptolyngbya ectocarpi and Toxifilum mysidocida. Anagnostidinema pseudacutissimum and Cephalothrix komarekiana had been previously reported to inhabit freshwater, but these were found to be present in brackish water during the period of the present study. Also, Cyanosarcina chroococcoides previously reported to inhabit moorland waters and swamps, were found to be present in subaerophytic habitat.
