  • Sand-concrete is being researched for potential usage in construction in Saharan regions of Algeria, because of shortage in coarse aggregate resources. This research work deals with the effect of dune sand, available in huge quantities in these regions, on the properties of flowing sand-concrete (FSC) prepared with different proportions of dune and river sands. Mini-cone slump test, v-funnel flow-time test and viscosity measurements were used to characterize the behaviour of FSC in fresh state. The 28-day compressive strength was also determined. Test results show that an optimal content of dune sand, which makes satisfied fresh and hardened properties of FSC, is obtained. Moreover, the obtained flow index (constant b) calculated by the help of power-law viscosity model is successfully correlated to the experimental results of v-funnel flow time.

  • The F3D(Free-Form Formwork 3D Printer) technology that manufactures EPS(Expanded Polystyrene) formworks for irregular-shaped concrete structures by 3D printers was developed to reduce the cost and time. Because of weak strength and low elastic modulus of the EPS, structural performance including lateral pressure by fresh concrete of the formwork that consisted of EPS should be investigated. In order to calculate lateral pressures acting on formwork, several variables including sizes, shapes of formwork, tangential force(fricition) between fresh concrete and formwork, and material properties of fresh concrete should be considered. However, current regulations have not considered the properties of concrete, only focused on vertical formwork. Galleo introduced 3-dimensional finite element analysis models to calculate lateral pressure on formwork. Thus, proposed finite element analysis model based on previous studies were verified for vertical formwork and irregular-shaped formwork. The test results were compared with those by FEM analysis. As a result, the test agrees well with the analysis.

  • This test was attempted to investigate the effects of some mix designs of concreteon the compressive strengths and corrosive rates when exposed to sea water of the West Sea. In this test, concrete mixes consisted of an ordinary concrete, a pozzolan concrete and concretes with different admixtures such as fly ash, pozzolith and vinsol resin. Compressive strengths of the concrete were measured at ages of 1-year and 2-years when exposed to both sea water and fresh water. Corrosive rate was tested at ages of 1-year and 2-years when exposed to sea water only. The results obtained from the test may be summarized as follows: (1) When all of concretes were exposed to fresh water, compressive strength of an ordinary concrete was the lowest at all mixes of concretes, and all of them showed higher strength as the exposing age is longer. It was evidance that the uses of pozsolan cement, fly ash, pozzolith and vinsol resin in mix design of concrete had an effect on increasing compressive strength and that fresh water also had an effect on curing concretes even though at a long-time age. (2) When concretes were exposed sea water, a concrete with fly ash was the highest in compressive strength and its strength was increasing as the exposing age is longer, but the other concretes were decreased at 2-year exposure. It was found that a concrete with fly ash was the most effective on compressive strength of all concrete, but the other concretes were attacked by action of the sea water. (3) The use of vinsol resin admixture was the most resistant to corrosion by sea water, while the use of pozzolith was the most serious at corrosion and the others were corroded to almost same extent. (4) The relationship between corrosions and compressive strengths of concretes was not clearly correlated yet. It was known that the corrosive rate of concretes could not affect to compressive strengths by 2-year exposure of the sea water. (5) Pozzolan concrete was the most effective in compressive strength when exposed to fresh water only, However, the use of a fly ash admixture was available for compressive strength when exposing to both fresh water and sea water. It was also noticed that the use of vinsol resin was not available for strengths of concrete but for resistance to corrosion when exposed to sea water. (6) It was found that the use of pozzolith was so defective in compressive strengths and corrosiive resistance when exposing to sea water that it was only available for fresh water.

  • In this study, the properties of super flowing cocrete containing gly ash were experimentally investigated and compared with those of ordinary concrete. Tests were carried out on five types of super flowing concrete mixes containing fly ash and three types of ordinary concrete mixes without fly ash. Flow test, O-funnel test, box test, Ltype thest and slump test were carried out to obtain the properties for the workability of fresh concrete. Compressime strength, splitting tensile strength, modulus of elasticity. creep and shrinkage test were also obtained as the mechanical properties of hardened concrete. In fresh concrete, it was found that super flowing concrete had excellent workability and flowability compared with ordinary concrete, and the volume ratio of coarse aggregate to concrete volume greatly influenced flowability. Super flowing concrete also had good mechanical properties at both early and late ages with compressive strengths reaching as high as 40 MPa at 28 days. The creep deformation of super flowing concrete investigated were relatively lower than that of ordinary concrete.

  • The rising prices of landfills and the lack of cement production are motivating researchers to be more interested in using wastes to produce concrete mixtures materials. The use of waste materials such as eggshell and matakoline waste not only reduces landfill costs and space, but also reduces the cost of cement production for the concrete mixture. However, recycling waste materials has become critical in order to effectively manage environmental sustainability. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the appropriate properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) by incorporating waste materials such as crushed ceramics as coarse aggregate and nano egg shell (NES) and nanoclay (NC) as cement replacements. Fresh properties of SCC, such as segregation, flow time and diameter, V-funnel, H2/H1 ratio, and fresh unit weight of concrete mixtures, as well as hardened properties, such as 7, 14, and 28 days compressive strength and 28 and 90 days flexural strength, were measured for this purpose. The presence of NC in the SCC mixture enhanced the compressive strength of the concrete when 5% of NES was added or in the case without the addition of NES compared to the control mixture. The flexural strength enhanced with the incorporation of NC in the SCC increased the flexural strength of the concrete compared to the control mixture, but the incorporation of 5% of NES decreased the flexural strength compared to the mixtures with NC. These results prove the possibility of using crushed ceramics as the coarse aggregate, and NES and NC as substitutes for 5, 7, and 10% of the cement in SCC, because the properties of such SCC in hardened and fresh states are satisfactory.

  • The use of sustainable technologies such as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), and/or recycled materials is expected to positively affect the performance of concrete mixtures. However, it is imperative to qualify and implement such mixtures in practice, if the required specifications of their intended application are met. This paper presents the results of a laboratory investigation of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) containing sustainable technologies. Twelve mixes were prepared with different combinations of fly ash, slag, and recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). Fresh and hardened concrete properties were measured, as expected the inclusion of the sustainable technologies affected both fresh and hardened concrete properties. Analysis of the experimental data indicated that inclusion of RAP not only reduces the ultimate strength, but it also affected the compressive strength development rate. The addition of RAP to mixes showed a consistent effect, with a drop in strength after 3, 14, and 28 days as the RAP content increased from 0 to 50 %. However, most of the mixes satisfied SCC fresh properties requirements, including mixes with up to 50 % RAP. Moreover, several mixes satisfied compressive strength requirement for pavements and bridges, those mixes included relatively high percentages of SCMs and RAP.

  • This study was attempted in order to investigate the effects of superplasticizers on fresh and hardened concrete. The experimental program included tests on the slump and slump loss, bleeding, time of set, air content, the compacting, factor Vee Dee, compressive strength, tensile and flexural strength, permeability, shrinkage and freege-thaw durability. The major conclusions that can be drawn on the study are as follows. 1. Superplasticizers were observed to have an appreciable fluidifying action in fresh concrete so that tinder appropriate conditions, they either considerably improved its workability or permitted a water reduction of at least 8-12% to be made while maintaining normal workability. 2. The bleeding ratios of base and S,P. Concrete were much lower than those of the conventional concrete. Differences between the base and S.P. Concrete were insignifician. 3. The setting time was the longest for conventionla concrete, followed by S.P. concrete and base concrete in thatorder. And AE water reduction admixtures showed an appreciable influence on the setting and hardening characteristics of concrete and prolonged the stiffening times. 4. The high initial slump values of S.P. concrete generally decreased rapidly with increased standing time. CF values showed increasing tendencies with the increase of S.P. content, and excessive addition of S.P. caused the segregation of fresh concrete, resulting in its rejection. 5. Though there was a slight increase in strength, no significant differences are observed between base and S.P. concrete in terms of the compressive, tensile and flexural strength. 6. The permeability of S.P. concrete was significantly less than that of the conventional concrete, and the shrinkage of S.P. concrete was considerably smaller than that of the conventional concrete, but there were no significant differences between base and S.P. concrete. 7. Compared to base concrete, S.P. concrete without entrained air tended to slightly increase freeze-thaw durability, and S.P. concrete with an appropriate entrained air gave satisfactory resistance to freezing and thawing.
