  • Since human listening is very sensitive when the sound hit him, the subjective index of sound quality is required. Therefore, at each situation of sound evaluation its composed with the sound quality factor. But, when substituting the level of one frequency band we could not see the tendency of substitution at whole frequency band during the sound quality evaluation. In this study a design of experiment is used. The frequency domain is divided into an equally 12 parts and each level of domain whether is given increase or decrease due to the change of frequency band based on 'sharp' and 'annoy' of the sound quality is analyzed. By using the design of experiment the number of test is reduce very effectively by the number of experiment and each band the main effect will be as a solution. The case of sound quality for 'sharp' and 'annoy' at each band, the change of band (increase or decrease of sound pressure or keep maintain) which will be the most effects on the characteristics of sound quality can be identify and this will be able to us to select the objective frequency band. Through these obtained results the physical changes of level at arbitrary frequency domain sensitivity can be adapted.

  • The effect of the configuration of the nozzle and the impinging surface on the characteristics of the hole-tones has been experimentally investigated. It is found that the plate-tone is a special case of hole-tones, where the hole diameter is zero. The jet velocity range for hole-tones is divided into the low velocity region associated with laminar jet and the high velocity region with turbulent jet. The frequency of the tone is that for the shear layer instability at the nozzle exit or that attainable by a cascade of vortex pairing process with increase of the impinging distance. When the distance is longer than one diameter the frequency decreases to the terminal value near the preferred frequency of the column mode instability, in the range 0.23< $St_d$<0.53, where $St_d$ is the Strouhal number defined by $fd/U_J$, f the frequency, d the nozzle diameter, and $U_J$ the exit velocity. While the convection speed of the downstream vortex, in the present study, is almost constant at low-speed laminar jet, it increases with distance at high-speed turbulent jet. As the frequency increases, the convection speed decreases in the low frequency range corresponding to the preferred mode, in agreement with the existing experimental data for a free jet.

  • Compact fluorescent lamps are very sensitive to the variation of ambient temperature. This paper investigates the temperature characteristics of a 15[W] compact fluorescent lamp, and compensates the variation of light output by frequency control of its electronic ballast. Circuit parameters for the inverter of the electronic ballast are obtained by analyzing the R-L-C equivalent circuit for the inverter and the lamp. The optimum ratio of the two capacitance($C_1$/$C_2$), which are connected with the lamp in series and in parallel, respectively, is determined which consideration of the temperature variation within a range of 10~35[$^{\circ}C$]. As a result a value of 10 for the ratio is obtained at an operating frequency of 57[kHz], and with this value the frequency control works well for temperature compensation. Its validity is verified by investigating light output stabilization characteristics resulting from frequency control of the lamp at various temperatures.

  • The continuous elements method, also known as the dynamic stiffness method, is effective for solving structural dynamics problems, especially over a large frequency range. Before applying this method to fluid-structure interactions, it is advisable to check its validity for pure acoustics, without considering the different coupling parameters. This paper describes a procedure for taking wave propagation into account in the formulation of a Dynamic Stiffness Matrix. The procedure is presented in the context of the harmonic response of acoustic pressure. This development was validated by comparing the harmonic response calculations performed using the continuous element model with the analytical solution. In addition, this paper illustrates the application of this method to a simple compressible flow problem, since it has been applied solely to structural problems to date.

  • The purpose of this study is to classify the deficient abilities of seafarers into SRK (Skill, Rule, and Knowledge) and analyze and identify the SRK by the type of accident and ship. Experimental data used the SRK cumulative frequency for 1,606 marine accident records and two-way ANOVA and t-test were used for the analysis tools. The results of two-way ANOVA showed that it is possible to identify the deficient abilities by using the cumulative frequency of SRK in both accident and ship types. As a result of the t-test, the adoption of the null hypothesis (H=0) that the mean of two pairs is equal and the rejection of the null hypothesis (H=1) were 29.2 % and 70.8 %, respectively. For the ship type, H=0 is 33.3 % and H=1 is 66.7 %. Through this study, it was found that about 70 % of the deficient abilities of seafarers inherent in maritime accidents can be identified using the proposed method.

  • In this paper, we improve statistical-model-based speech detector using the probability that a speech occupies a frequency bin. While the previous method assumes speech energy occupies all the frequency components and use them with equal weights in the likelihood ratio test for speech detection, the proposed method assumes speech energy occupies just some frequency componets and use them with different weights in accordance with the probabilities of spectral occupancy in the test. The probability is iteratively up-dated for speech frames to contribute to the likelihood ratio test. The proposed method well reflects the characteristic distribution of speech spectrum, and yields better detection performance.

  • Pulse electrochemical polishing process has been used to improve mechanical properties such as surface roughness and corrosion resistance on conductive metallic materials. In addition, pulse electrochemical polishing process with various frequency may produce a lustrous, smoother, deburred and cleaned surface on workpiece. The aim of this paper is to study surface characteristics of pulse electrochemical polishing for various frequency conditions using AFM to verify localized surface variation in nanometer scale.

  • In this paper we introduce a nonparametric method for estimating the probability density function of detection distances in line transect sampling. The estimator is obtained using a frequency histogram density estimation method. The asymptotic properties of the proposed estimator are derived and compared with those of the kernel estimator under the assumption that the data collected satisfy the shoulder condition. We found that the asymptotic mean square error (AMSE) of the two estimators have about the same convergence rate. The formula for the optimal histogram bin width is derived which minimizes AMSE. Moreover, the performances of the corresponding k-nearest-neighbor estimators are studied through simulation techniques. In the absence of our knowledge whether the shoulder condition is valid or not a new semi-parametric model is suggested to fit the line transect data. The performances of the proposed two estimators are studied and compared with some existing nonparametric and semiparametric estimators using simulation techniques. The results demonstrate the superiority of the new estimators in most cases considered.

  • This paper presents the design method of a dimming electronic ballast for fluorescent lamps using a frequency control IC, and investigates the effects of circuit variables on its dimming characteristics. It is shown that effective dimming is possible with IC IR2151 for frequency control, and this leads to a feasible design of more smaller and cheaper dimming ballast. Five ballasts different in the values of the series inductance and capactance are designed, and their dimming characteristics are compared. As the result, the dimming range becomes more broader as the series inductance gets smaller and the capacitance larger. Thus appropriate selection of the values of L and C should be made according to the types of application site.
