  • As needs for substitution of excessive road-oriented transport by the railroad increase, we proposed the guideline for development of the high speed freight car up to 150km/h through analyzing the critical speed of welded-type freight car employed and investigating the improvement in its maintenance. This study, the proper design parameters of conical rubber spring was determined to meet the vibration performance.

  • In this study, a numerical method which assesses running stability of freight car loading 300m CWR and structural safety of conventional railway track when passing over curves and steel girder bridges is presented. Optimal speed of the freight car is suggest on the basis of numerical reviews for stability of derailment of the freight car and structural safety of track at weak points of the conventional line.

  • With the goal of eradicating overwork, overload, and speeding of general freight cars(cargo) by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Infrastructure and Transport, the "The Fare of safe transportation for freight cars System" has been enforced since 2020. 'The Fare of safe transportation for freight cars' rate for each item is being applied and supplemented, but the 'The Cost of safe transportation for freight cars' of general freight cars (cargo) and steel items is under discussion. The purpose of this study was to estimate the willingness to pay( WTP) for cargo. A survey was conducted on shippers, transportation companies (arrangers, carriers), and cargo drivers (using direct questioning among contingent valuation method (CVM) and the Tobit Regression analysis was conducted, and the average and median values of freight rates were derived using the estimated results, and the willingness to pay by tonnage of freight cars was confirmed. It is expected that the results of this study can be used as a reference to the "The Fare of safe transportation for freight cars Committee" an organization for deliberation and resolution of the 'The Cost of safe transportation for freight cars'.

Analysis of Shipping Markets Using VAR and VECM Models (VAR과 VECM 모형을 이용한 해운시장 분석)

  • This study analyzes the dynamic characteristics of cargo volume (demand), ship fleet (supply), and freight rate (price) of container, dry bulk, and tanker shipping markets by using the VAR and VECM models. This analysis is expected to enhance the statistical understanding of market dynamics, which is perceived by the actual experiences of market participants. The common statistical patterns, which are all shown in the three shipping markets, are as follows: 1) The Granger-causality test reveals that the past increase of fleet variable induces the present decrease of freight rate variable. 2) The impulse-response analysis shows that cargo shock increases the freight rate but fleet shock decreases the freight rate. 3) Among the three cargo, fleet, and freight rate shocks, the freight rate shock is overwhelmingly largest. 4) The comparison of adjR2 reveals that the fleet variable is most explained by the endogenous variables, i.e., cargo, fleet, and freight rate in each of shipping markets. 5) The estimation of co-integrating vectors shows that the increase of cargo increases the freight rate but the increase of fleet decreases the freight rate. 6) The estimation of adjustment speed demonstrates that the past-period positive deviation from the long-run equilibrium freight rate induces the decrease of present freight rate.

Competition and deconcentration of logistics companies in Vietnam focusing on domestic freight forwarders (베트남 물류기업의 경쟁 및 탈 집중화: 베트남 포워더를 중심으로)

  • The main objective of this study is to measure the concentration and deconcentration of the domestic freight forwarding system which illustrate the development trends in this industry. In this study, Herfindal-Hirschman index (HHI), shift-share analysis (SSA), and GINI coefficient combined with Lorenz curves were employed to investigate the domestic freight forwarders. The results are as follows: first, the HHI was used to assess the concentration of domestic freight forwarders in Vietnam. The downward trend from 0.117 in 2008 to 0.083 in 2018 indicate the deconcentration of domestic freight forwarders in Vietnam. Second, the SSA results indicated that the company Transimex showed the best performance with a shift effect of million VND 1,906,515 and a ABSGR value of million VND 2,158,232. Third, the GINI index go down from 0.468 to 0.393 in 2008-2018 as follow and the Lorenz curves covered a large part which make more demonstrate the deconcentration trend of freight forwarding in Vietnam. The results show that deconcentration is a trend in 2008-2018. The results of this study provides relevant data on freight forwarders which are not easily accessible to related stakeholders.

Factors Affecting the Choice of International Freight Forwarders for Korean Shippers (국내 화주의 국제물류주선기업 선정요인)

  • A freight forwarder plays an important role in global trade and logistics by connecting worldwide nodes such as shippers, ports, and airports. Most freight forwarders in Korea are small and do not provide a sophisticated and professional service. This study aims to develop a strategy for Korean freight forwarders to the world-class 3PLs which they have to establish the strategy on how shippers select their freight forwarders. We conducted a higher-order factor analysis using the PLS-SEM techniques on the SmartPLS program to confirm the importance and significance of each factor, while considering relevant previous research. The findings suggested that shippers chose their freight forwarders for international logistics activities primarily by the reliability and forwarder service factors. Therefore, freight forwarders in Korea have to strengthen confidence and widen their service to shippers in order to become leading logistics companies.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the spatial structure of Mega-Economic Region particularly in Daegu using Freight Origin-Destination (O/D) Data which comes from KTDB. To diagnose the appropriate separation of Regions, the mean of three standardized indices was calculated. The indicates measured are Freight Occupancy Ratio (FOR), Freight Dependancy Ratio (FDR), Scale Parameter (SP), respectively. The result of analysis showed that FOR FDR SP indicators gave effective explanation about characteristic of Regions depending on Freight moving patterns. Especially, Gyeongsan and Gumi had high correlation Regions with FOR FDR indicator. Also, the major industries of Daegu Metropolitan based on the SP indicator are Chemical and Metal machinery industry.

  • Modern freight transport pursues not only the reduction of logistic costs but also aims at green logistics and efficient shipments. In order to accomplish these goals, various policies regarding the multimodal shipment and stopover to logistic facilities have widely been made. Such situation requires changes in existing methods for analyzing freight demand. However, the reality is that a reliable freight demand forecast is limited, since in the transport research field there is no robust freight demand model that can accommodate transshipments at logistic facilities. This study suggested a novel method to analyze freight demand, which can consider transshipments in multi-modal networks. Also, the applicability of this method was discussed through an example test.

A Study on Extraction of International Freight Forwarders' Service Quality Factors: the Case of South Korea (포워더의 서비스품질 요인의 도출에 관한 연구 - 한국의 사례 -)

  • The international freight forwarders in South Korea currently have fierce competition. However, there are still a very small number of studies Korea locally and globally on the service quality of international freight forwarding industry. This study aims to extract international freight forwarders' service quality factors reflecting the characteristics of freight forwarding industry. Measures of service quality have been selected after literature review and interviews, and then surveys have been conducted on exporters and importers in Korea. The collected data has been analyzed using the exploratory factor analysis. As a result, two service quality factors of international freight forwarders have been extracted: operation characteristics factor defined as accuracy, speediness timeliness and stability, and customer orientation factor defined as professionalism and empathy. An important contribution of this study is that it presents the service quality factors reflecting the characteristics of freight forwarding industry unlike precedent studies. A future research topic is to find out which of the two service quality factors influences more on customer loyalty.

Analysis and Evaluation of Reduction of Impact Force in a Coupler when a Long Freight Car Brakes (장대화물열차 제동 시 연결기에 발생하는 충격력 해석 및 분석)

  • In long freight trains, there is a brake time delay in the neighboring freight cars that causes damage and fractures of couplers, especially the knuckle of them. If there is a problem for couplers in the cars, this could cause a derailment and lead to damage of human life and property damage. In this study, maximum forces on the couplers are studied when a long freight car brakes, with brake delay time and coupler gap. We have made a dynamic model of 50 freight cars and couplers, applying contact between couplers and a characteristic curve for expressing force and displacement of buffers with SIMPACK, a multi-body dynamics program. We use EN 14531-2 from the British Standards Institution, a standard of freight car brakes for the verification of the dynamic model. We also use a simplified method to analyze the dynamic model of 50 freight cars. With changing coupler gap and brake delay time, we do comparative analysis with AAR M-201 from the Association of American Railroads, a standard of AAR couplers. From this result, we find that the standard on fatigue limit is satisfied, such that the brake delay time is within 0.06 second if the coupler gap of the AAR coupler is within 20 millimeters.
