A Study on the Competitive Structure of Transportation Items by Freight Railway Lines: The case of South Korea (화물철도 노선별 운송 품목의 경쟁구조에 관한 연구 : 우리나라를 중심으로)

  • The logistics industry is changing with the diversification of demand and related technology development. Thus, the transportation system is also changing to social problems and environmental damage, and the importance of rail freight is increasing with changes in the international logistics environment. This study analyzes railway freight competition structure using freight volume and suggests improving the competitiveness of railroad freight. To achieve the research purpose, this study was conducted using the Hirshmann-Herfindahl Index(HHI) and Location Quotients(LQ) method. As a result, the concentration trend of railway trends has increased from 0.213 to 0.238 during the last 9 years, and LQ analysis has enabled the identification of local competition lines by item. The study result confirmed that policy measures on railway freight system, railway infrastructure construction and railway operation are necessary to enhance railway competitiveness.

  • Successful market adoption of rail freight transport innovations that might offer opportunities for market share increase is the focus of this paper. Firstly, seen from a theoretical point of view, it is not incremental innovations but radical organizational and transformation innovations that are likely to increase the market share of rail freight transport. Secondly, the particular inovations that offer some success potential for market adoption are: dedicated infrastructure, the fixed timetable, locomotive upgrades, and INTERFACE. Thirdly, unfortunately, the opportunities to increase the market share of rail freight transport appear to be limited.

  • This study tried to suggest a new direction of rail freight pricing in Korea. Determinant factors of rail freight fare are collected and pricing principles are introduced. Marginal social costs are to be fare of rail freight in theory and those costs should be estimated in the near future. From the market pricing of North American rail freight carriers we can find a direction of future pricing and from the EU efforts to estimate social marginal costs we can also find research agenda.

  • Urban areas face congestion problems that diminish personal mobility and freight-transportation productivity. An increasing number of experts suggest that separating freight traffic from passenger traffic makes sense in terms of economics, the environment, and safety. Some experts suggest that underground freight transportation are the solution. The objective of this paper is to review the potential benefits and limitations of freight pipelines as a viable mode of cargo transport that can alleviate congestion on urban highways.

  • Recently, freight cars for diverse purposes were developed to increase the speed of freight car in conventional line. The welded type bogies are applied to these vehicles like container car, gondola car, hopper car, etc. This study was focused on the dynamic characteristics and the stability of freight car to guarantee the running safety. We have conducted the running tests of freight cars in conventional line and described the test results in this paper.

  • Freight Forwarders is very important of logistics industry but it still has a lot of problems which have to be improved. The purposes of this study are realizing the current state of freight forwarders and suggesting the developing strategies. It is necessary to make proper size, develop of human resource and construct of information system for development of freight forwarders. Furthermore, it requires more efforts of company and government such as support of tax, support of investment in freight forwarders.

  • With increasing global concerns for environmental impacts, efforts have been made to encourage a modal shift from road freight to an eco-friendly transport system such as rail freight. In Korea, the government has set master plans for a green transport system but has not taken any substantial action to promote rail freight transport. In developing policies and actions to promote rail freight, quantitative studies on environmental impacts among transportation means are essential. This study examined the air pollutant emissions and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per unit freight transported by road and rail, respectively. To improve the accuracy, we analyzed emission data and freight transport mileage of rail freight considering diesel locomotives and electric locomotives separately. The results show that unit air pollutant emissions (except SO2) from road freight are about 7~15 times more than those from rail freight. In addition, the GHG emission unit of road freight is about 4 times higher than that of rail freight.

  • The core decisions of bulk shipping businesses can be summarized as the timing and the choice of period for which carrying capacity is traded. In particular, frequent decisions to trade freight either with repeated spot transactions or with a one-off long-term deal critically impact business performance. Even though a variety of freight trading strategies can be employed to facilitate the decisions, chartering practitioners have not been active in utilizing these strategies, and academic research has rarely proposed applicable solutions. The specific properties of freight as a tradable commodity are not properly reflected in existing studies, and limitations have been reported in their application to the real world. This research focused on the establishment of applicable freight trading strategies by taking into account two properties of freight: time perishability and term-dependant pricing. In addition to traditional trading strategies, artificial neural networks were applied for the first time to the test of freight trading strategies. The performances of the trading strategies were measured and compared to produce a remarkable outperformance of the ANN. This research is expected to make a significant contribution to chartering practices by enhancing the quality of chartering decisions and eventually enabling the effective management of freight rate risk. In addition to methodological expansion, the result will propose a way to approach the controversial issue of freight market efficiency.

  • Recently, in order to improve the efficiency of freight transportation on existing lines, a new freight train model is needed to develop urgently. The weight balance of the cargo for the freight vehicle is very important for the stability of the running train and the safe transportation of the cargo. For achieving the cargo weight balance, we proposed a Cargo Balancing Control(CBC) system on the Freight vehicle equipped in between under frame of car body and bogie system. The Cargo Safety Monitoring(CSM) system was designed to supervise status of the Cargo on freight train. The monitoring system can display real time status data from sensors and various signals effectively. We suggested that this paper is a very useful approach for keeping the safety of running freight trains on existing lines.

Support Measures for Domestic Rail Freight (국내 철도 화물운송 지원제도 개선방안)

  • Recently, the importance of rail in the carriage of freight is strongly emphasized. However, the role of rail in the carriage of freight has been decreasing. The purpose of this study is to suggest policy measures for increasing rail freight. Firstly, this study reviews the current situations of the rail freight in Korea and provides theories for the necessity of government support to rail freight transport. Various support measures are identified and evaluated. According to the evaluation, it is shown that the provision of subsidy for facility construction is the most desirable measure in the sense of cost effectiveness and durability of effect. Finally, detailed implementation strategies for the desirable support measures are suggested.
