  • Concrete with ground granulated blast-furnace slag can be affected by frost attack because the reaction of hydration is slow at the early age. In this study, therefore, the freezing and thawing test has been carried out to investigate the freezing and thawing resistance on concrete with ground granulated blast-furnace slag. The freezing and thawing test has been performed on concrete a blended cement, which was substituted by ground granulated blast-furnace slag with 4 kinds of ratio (non-admixture, 20%, 40% and 60%). And also tested on concrete added the AE agents to the concrete of same mix proportion to search the improvement effects about the resistance. As a result, the freezing and thawing resistance showed a tendency of reduction in proportion to the increase of the substitution ratio. For non-AE concrete, resistances of the freezing and thawing were very poor as the durability index indicated less than 5.8%. For AE concrte, resistance of the freezing and thawing were excellent as the durability index indicated more than 80.9%.

  • The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of the partial freezing as a means of keeping freshness of mullet (Mugil cephlus). Living samples were killed and stored by icing, partial freezing at $-3^{\circ}C$ and freezing at $-30^{\circ}C$, respectively, Changes in the freshness of the mullet muscle and the phys cal properties of its meat paste product were examined during storage. The results obtained are summarized as follows: The period that k value reached to $20\%$ during storage was the longest in the frozen storage, followed by the partial frozen storage and the ice storage, which was 4 days in the mullet muscle stored by partial freezing. In the case of VBN content, it was below 20 mg/100g in the mullet muscle stored by icing and partial freezing. The oxidation of lipids in the mullet muscle was greater in the ice storage than in the partial frozen storage. The myofibrillar protein of the mullet muscle was appeared to decrease during storage, which the decreasing ratios during storage for 9 days were below $3\%$ in the frozen storage, $17\%$ in the ice storage and $10\%$ in the partial frozen storage. While, the alkali-soluble protein showed to increase and in non-protein nitrgenous compounds, sarcoplasmic protein and stroma was not a great change during storage. The decrease of gel strength, folding strength and texture of meat paste products prepared under different storage conditions was the greatest in the ice storage, the next in the partial frozen storage and such changes in the frozen storage were not so much. In gel strength of the product prepared with sample fishes stored for 10 days, the gel strength in the ice storage, partial frozen storage and frozen storage was about $30\%,\;60\%\;and\;97\%$ of the control. respectively. The expressible drip of the products increased with storage time of raw fishes, which that of the products prepared with sample fishes stored for 15 days was about 2.1 times in the ics storage, about 1.5 times in the partial frozen storage and about 1.1 times in frozen storage as much as that of the control, respectively.

  • The total proteins were estimated in both deoxycholate (DOC)-extract of sperm membrane and seminal plasma of chilled as well as frozen semen obtained from five Murrah buffalo bulls. Proteins were further characterized by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) in three bulls. The protein content of sperm membrane extract (SME) and that of seminal plasma (SP) decreased gradually with increase in freezing period from 6 to 24 mo when compared with the values observed in freshly chilled semen in all bulls. The total decrease in protein content of SME and SP varied from 30-40% and 28-59% respectively during 6-24 mo of freezing. The number of glycoproteins/proteins (GP/P) in SME varied from 4-8 in freshly-chilled semen of all bulls and reduced to 2-4 after 24 mo of freezing. In SP, the number of proteins varied from 6-10 in freshly chilled semen of all bulls and reduced to 3-8 after 24 mo of freezing. Some of the proteins in SME and SP disappeared, others got altered and appeared with change in molecular weight after different freezing times. These studies reveal that alterations in the sperm membrane proteins may be responsible for damage to their membrane during freezing and thus lowering their fertilizability.

  • This study numerically analyzed the icing process in a U-shaped pipe exposed to the outside by considering the mushy zone of freezing water. Numerical results showed that the flow was pulled outward due to the U-shaped bend in the freezing section exposed to the outside, which resulted in the ice wave formation on the wall of the bended pipe behind. At the same time, the formation of a corrugated ice layer became apparent due to the venturi effect caused by the ice. The factors affecting the freezing were investigated, including the change of the pipe wall temperature, the water inflow velocity, and the pipe bend spacing. It was found that, as a whole, the thickness of the freezing layer increased as the pipe wall temperature decreased. It was also found that the freezing layer became relatively thin when the inflow rate of water was increased, and that the spacing of the pipe bends did not significantly impact the change in the freezing layer.

  • The effects of seeding method and optimum time for freezing embryos according to the developmental stages on embryo survival rates after rapid freezing were determined using the FDA-test. The summarized results are as follows : 1. In the rapid freezing of embryos, the sucrose added medium together with Co-seeding or non-seeding showed the FDA scores of 4.67 and 4.20, respectively, but, raffinose addition obtained FDA scores of 4.27 and 3.97. 2. The developmental stage of embryos at freezing was most critical on the survival of embryos after thawing. Higher FDA scores were obtained in the order of blastocyst stage(4.94), morula stage(3.82) and ealy stage(2.65) in sucrose added medium. The same trend was observed in the raffinose added medium with an order or 4.91, 4.47 and 2.32. 3. Microscopic study of embryo before freezing and post-thawing indicated that the embryo showed shrinkage within 5 minutes after the embryo was transfer to the freezing medium. When thawed embryo was tranfered to the dilution medium, swelling of the embryo was observed and there after it reshrank indicating the removal of cryoprotectant from the embryo. The size of the embryo recovered to the original state when it was moved into a PBS-solution.

  • Road freezing caused by snowfall during wintertime causes traffic congestion and many accidents. To prevent such problems, we developed, in this study, a system to predict road freezing based on weather forecast data and the freezing generation modules. The weather forecast data were obtained from a high-resolution model with 1 km resolution for Jeju Island from 00:00 KST on December 1, 2017, to 23:00 KST on February 28, 2018. The results of the weather forecast data show that index of agreement (IOA) temperature was higher than 0.85 at all points, and that for wind speed was higher than 0.7 except in Seogwipo city. In order to evaluate the results of the freezing predictions, we used model evaluation metrics obtained from a confusion matrix. These metrics revealed that, the Imacho module showed good performance in precision and accuracy and that the Karlsson module showed good performance in specificity and FP rate. In particular, Cohen's kappa value was shown to be excellent for both modules, demonstrating that the algorithm is reliable. The superiority of both the modules shows that the new system can prevent traffic problems related to road freezing in the Jeju area during wintertime.

  • Freezing and thawing of pore water within backfill can affect the stability of retaining wall as the phase change of pore water causes changes in the mechanical characteristics of backfill material. In this study, the effects of freezing and thawing on the mechanical performance of retaining wall with granular backfill were investigated for various temperature and groundwater level (GWL) conditions. The thermal and mechanical finite element analyses were performed by assigning the coefficient of lateral earth pressure according to phase change of soil for at-rest, active and passive stress states. For the at-rest condition, the mobilized lateral stress and overturning moment changed markedly during freezing and thawing. Active-state displacements for the thawed condition were larger than for the unfrozen condition whereas the effect of freezing and thawing was small for the passive condition. GWL affected significantly the lateral force and overturning moment (Mo) acting on the wall during freezing and thawing, indicating that the reduction of safety margin and wall collapse due to freezing and thawing can occur in sudden, unexpected patterns. The beneficial effect of an insulation layer between the retaining wall and the backfill in reducing the heat conduction from the wall face was also investigated and presented.

  • The purpose of this study was to prevent spreading of contaminants from movement of underground water by creating a barrier using artificial freezing method on a soil contaminated by oils and various NAPLs. Specimens with 80% and 90% degrees of saturation were prepared to form freezing barrier using artificial freezing method. With increasing freezing time of freezing barrier, barrier was formed faster in the specimen with 90% degree of saturation by about an hour compared to the specimen with 80% degree of saturation. In addition, thinnest thickness of frozen barrier in both specimens was 50mm after 12 hours of freezing time, showing expansion of freezing area with time. The results of this study can be applied to barrier in waste reclamation sites and contaminated regions or to flow control of contaminants.
