  • The aim of this investigation was to assess the difference of health behaviors, dietary patterns and nutrient intakes between smokers and nonsmoker from 435 free living elderly in Kyunggi province. The study subjects were interviewed to collect general characteristics and health behaviors such as smoking, exercise, alcohol consumption, and food habits by questionnaires and nutrient intakes by a 24-hour recall, and weight, height, waist, hip, and blood pressure were measured. The percentages of smoker were 52.3% in males and 12.1% in females. Current smokers were fond of alcohol, salty or hot food, tended to have meals irregularly and insufficient sleep, and were inactive lifestyle compared to nonsmokers. Smokers consumed fewer servings of vegetables, fruits, and beans and their products. Women who smoked consumed less energy, carbohydrates, and vitamin E than nonsmokers, and their nutrient adequacy ratio of protein, iron, phosphate, niacin, vitamin B1, and vitamin C were significantly lower than nonsmokers. There were no differences of nutrient intakes and nutrient adequacy ratio between smokers and nonsmokers in male subjects. In conclusion, elderly smokers tended to have less healthy life style, food habit, and dietary nutrient intakes which may influence the deleterious effects of smoke components on cancer and coronary heart disease risk, thus health education program should include nutrition education as well as smoking cessation.

  • This study explored the sandplay therapy case of an elementary school-aged girl living in a home in which there exist severe conflicts between her mother and older brother. This study focused heavily on fairy tales. The goal of the therapy was to encourage appropriate adjustments with the girl's situation within the free and protected space of sandplay therapy. Forty-four therapy sessions were held. The client exhibited evidence of feelings of being abandoned and of becoming lethargic in the initial phase of therapy (1~10, forsakenness/sleeping family). In the intermediate phase of therapy (11~38, regression, opposition and purification/growth), as she displayed signs of regression, princess play, the opposition of goodness and badness and purification, she grew psychologically. In the final phase of therapy (39~44, redemption/rebirth of new consciousness), she was redeemed and reborn with a new sense of consciousness. Using sandplay therapy in a free and protected space, this study showed the various motives of fairy tales in the psyche of a pre-adolescence girl and the effectiveness of sandplay therapy.

  • This study was intended to investigate the relationship of dietary Na and Ca intake and excretion in blood pressure regulation of free-living adults. Two separate surveys were conducted for 294 subjects in Taegu area, The results of this study are as follows ; When subjects were divided into normotensive and hypertensive, there were significant differences in age, BMI between two groups, When dietary intake were compared between two groups, no significant differences in energy, carbohydrates, fat and protein intakes were shown. While Na intake of hypertensive groups was not signidicantly different from that of normotensive groups, While Na intake of hypertensive groups was not significantly different from that of normotensive groups, ca intake of hypertensive group was significantly lower than that of normotensive group(P<0.005), Urinary Na excretion was significantly higher(P<0.05) in hyperten sive group. However, urinary Ca and K excretion in both groups were not significantly different. Urinary sodium was significantly correlated with urinary Ca and Na intake. Multiple regression analysis of variables showed that urinary sodiumwas affected by Na index, age and Ca Index. While urinary Ca, was significantly correlated with urinary Na and K excretion, it did not show significant correlation with Ca intake

  • A survey was carried out from August to December 2004 in Pusan, Korea to document the presence of free-living amoeba (FLA), including the genus Acanthamoeba, in both contact lens storage cases and domestic tap water. Acanthamoeba was isolated from $5(4.2\%)$ in 120 contact lens storage cases. Four house tap water samples from residents, whose contact lens storage cases had been contaminated by Acanthamoeba, were also found to be contaminated with Acanthamoeba. Therefore, the contamination rate of FLA and Acanthamoeba in domestic tap water was investigated in order to examine the role of domestic tap water in Acanthamoeba contamination of contact lens storage cases. FLA and Acanthamoeba were identified in $97(46.8\%)\;and\;16(7.7\%)$ of the 207 domestic tap water samples, respectively. There were no significant differences between the contamination rates of FLA in tap water according to the filtration plant of origin. No FLA was detected in the tap water directly supplied by the water purification plants. Water storage tanks appear to promote FLA colonization, including Acanthamoeba, in domestic tap water. This increases the risk of Acanthamoeba contamination in contact lens storage cases as well as increasing the risk of Acanthamoeba keratitis.

  • Free-living amoebae of the genus Acanthamoeba are causative agents of granulomatous amebic encephalitis and amebic keratitis. Because the virulence of Acanthamoeba culbertsoni cultured in the laboratory is restored by consecutive brain passages, we examined the genes induced in mouse brain-passaged A. culbertsoni by differential display reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (DDRT-PCR). Enhanced A. culbertsoni virulence was observed during the second mouse brain passage, i.e., infected mouse mortality increased from $5\%\;to\;70\%.$ Ten cDNAs induced during mouse brain passage were identified by DDRT-PCR and this was confirmed by northern blot analysis. BlastX searches of these cDNAs indicated the upregulations of genes encoding predictive NADH-dehydrogenase, proteasomal ATPase, and GDP-mannose pyrophosphorylase B, which have previously been reported to be associated with A. culbertsoni virulence factors.

  • For researching nitrogen-fixing bacteria associated with gramineous crops, we collected growing roots of rices, wheats, oats, barleys, ryes, and maizes at 19 sites of southern Korean peninsula. Endophytes and free living bacteria were isolated from those crop roots. Sixty-three isolates were classified on the basis of different morphology, size, color, host of colony, and the 16S rDNAs sequence. The analyses of PCR amplification for nifH gene and nitrogenase activity assay, revealed that all isolates contained nitrogen-fixing abilities. In addition, most of them have cellulase activity which is one of the common features of endophytic bacteria from plant.

  • A new free-living marine nematode species of the genus Pseudosteineria Wieser, 1956 affiliated with the family Xyalidae is described based on specimens collected from the sediment of a subtidal benthic environmental habitat in the East Sea, Korea. Pseudosteineria varisetis sp. nov differed from its congeners by the combination of the following characteristics: a relatively long body (1,628-1,691 ㎛ long in males), a circular amphideal fovea situated behind the subcephalic setae, the presence of lateral cuticular alae starting from behind the nerve ring, the presence of eight groups of long subcephalic setae, the presence of irregularly distributed variable lengths of somatic setae on the body, solid spicules (43.2-43.9 ㎛ long) with a cephalated proximal end, a long tubular shaped gubernaculum with dorsal swelling, and a conico-cylindrical tail with two to four terminal setae. In this report, we provide a taxonomic description and illustrations of a new species of the genus Pseudosteineria by differential interference contrast microscopy.

  • During a survey of free-living marine nematodes of Korea, two new marine desmoscolecid nematodes belonging to subgenus Quadricoma Filipjev, 1922 were discovered. Tricoma (Q.) jejuensis sp. nov. and T.(Q.) unipapillata sp. nov. are described based on specimens obtained from washings of coarse sediments from eastern and southern coasts of Korea. Tricoma (Q.) jejuensis sp. nov. is characterized by having 33 quadricomoid body rings and inversion at main ring 23, pentagonal head with truncated anterior end, a pair of ocelli situated at main ring 6, somatic setae comprising of 8 pairs of subdorsal setae and 12 pairs of subventral setae, and relatively short spicules (42-46 ㎛ long). Tricoma (Q.) unipapillata sp. nov. is characterized by 44 quadricomoid body rings and inversion at main ring 32, somatic setae comprising of 7 pairs of subdorsal setae and 10 pairs of subventral setae, globular head truncated anterior end, relatively short and stumpy cephalic setae with cuticular flange, one single naked ventral median genital papillae situated on main ring 20, and spicules with a proximally marked capitulum. Detailed morphological descriptions and illustrations of these two new species are provided in this study.

  • Four species of the free-living nematodes were collected from marine sediments in the sublittoral zone in the East Sea, Korea and were identified, described, and illustrated. Paranticoma tricerviseta Zhang, 2005, originally described from the Bohai Sea, China, is recorded for the first time in the East Sea, Korea; only in body length and thickness (1902-2282 ㎛ compared to 2472-3300 ㎛, 50-62 ㎛ compared to 57-82 ㎛, respectively). Specimens of Parodontophora marina Zhang, 1991, from East Sea, Korea largely agrees with the original description of Zhang (1991) of nematodes from the Bohai Sea, except for differences in body length and thickness (1190-1345 ㎛ compared to 1235-1408 ㎛, 40-44 ㎛ compared to 42-72 ㎛). Terschellingia longicaudata de Man, 1907 is reported for the first time in Korea, but was previously considered a cosmopolitan species of nematodes with a widespread distribution from the North Sea, Belgium to the Exclusive Economic Zone of New Zealand; it differs from the original description in body thickness(30-38 ㎛ vs. 40-62 ㎛). Vasostoma brevispicula Huang & Wu, 2011, originally described from the subtidal muddy sediment in the Yellow Sea, China, is newly reported in Korea; apart from a few minor morphological differences, body length and thickness (2009-2425 ㎛ vs. 2119-2906 ㎛, 41-48 ㎛ vs. 37-58 ㎛). The present study on unrecorded species improves our understanding of nematode species diversity in Korean waters.

  • The subgenus Tricoma Cobb, 1894 comprises free-living marine nematodes encompassing a total of 83 validated taxa. Within this diversity, twenty-one taxa thrive in the deep sea, while twenty-three are found in coral reefs, flat areas, or green algae. Additionally, eleven taxa inhabit the sublittoral zone at depths exceeding 10 meters, and the remaining taxa are situated on beaches, coasts, or in habitats lacking detailed information. In the course of a survey focused on the East Sea free-living marine nematodes, we identified four new and two previously unrecorded species belonging to the subgenus Tricoma. Specifically, two new species, Tricoma (Tricoma) breviseta sp. nov. and T. (T.) donghaensis sp. nov., were discovered in mud-sandy sediment in deepsea environments below 2000 meters within the Ulleung Basin and Hupo Bank. Two previously unrecorded species [T. (T.) paralucida Decraemer, 1987 and T. (T.) similis Cobb, 1912] and the two newly found species [T. (T.) longicauda sp. nov. and T. (T.) ulleungensis sp. nov.] were obtained from subtidal coarse sand at a depth of 20 meters during a survey of the waters surrounding Ulleungdo Island. The distribution and information on validated taxa within the subgenus Tricoma were systematically collected, reviewed, and cataloged. Detailed morphological features and illustrations of Tricoma species from Korea were provided through the use of differential interference contrast microscopy.
