The Influence of Franchisors' Supportive Activities on Franchisees' Loyalty and Performance in the Franchised Restaurants (외식산업에서의 가맹본부의 지원이 가맹점 충성도 및 성과에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated how the franchisor's supportive activities influence the franchisee's loyalty and consequently their perceived performance in the franchised restaurants. The study found that the franchisor could increase the franchisee's loyalty through supportive activities and the franchise performance in results. However, the franchisor's advertising and promotion supports did not influence the franchisee's loyalty increase, but increase the franchisee's perceived performance. In summary, supportive activities such as efficient franchise system and advisory activities could be a starting point towards high franchise performance.

SA study of the Factors of Chinese Franchisor's Re-contract

  • Purpose - The objective of the paper is to explain the factors affecting on the Re-contract intension of franchisor in the uprising Chinese franchise market. Research design, data, methodology - The study conducted a survey on the 400 franchisors data in China from January to July 2012. By AMOS analyzing the data to examine these hypotheses empirically, we can confirm most hypothesis supposed. Results - This study shows that the high management performance and satisfaction of the franchise headquarters has a positive effect on the Re-contract intention of franchise. In the case of large markets such as China, the franchisor's strategy and the role is very important. Conclusions - This study provides franchisors and practitioners, who plan to extend their franchising business abroad into Chinese market, with some practical knowledge. in order to achieve stable profits, the franchise corporation needs to support the operation of the individual franchisee through incentives and standardization of services.

  • This paper aims to investigate the moderating effects of relationship quality between support services of food service franchisor and performance(re-contract intention) in food service franchise. For analyzing the relationship of them, the support services of food service franchisor categorized with initial service and continuous service. Also, the factors of relationship quality(satisfaction, trust, commitment) classified into detailed subfactor by confirmatory factor analysis. As a result, we found some statistically significant effects between the support services of food service franchisor and factors of relationship quality, and they sequentially affects to re-contract intention. Also, it's analyzed that factors of relationship quality have a role as a moderating variables by research model. That is, as a presented with previous research, there is verified that relationship quality is caused by support services of food service franchisor. Also, relationship quality factors significantly affect to performance(re-contract intention). Some guidelines for practicing potential food service franchise as a result of this would include; first of all, it is important to support the potential food service franchise consulting approach for some competitive advantage; secondly, effective governmental support programs for food service franchise should be developed for positive impacts of according to these results.

  • The purpose of this study was to find relationship of satisfaction factors between franchisor and franchisee, and to examine the effects on satisfaction with franchisee in foodservice industry. Through the prior study, instrumental and relational factors were adapted as independent variables, and satisfaction variables were selected as dependent variables. The survey was administered to 346 franchisor possessing over 30 franchisees at Dae-gu metropolitan area, and analyzed by SPSS 10.0. The results of analysis were examined through the multiple regression analysis.

  • Introduction The purpose of this research is to develop overall model which involves the effect of ongoing support services by franchisor on franchisee's relationship quality(trust, satisfaction, and commitment) and business performance(financial and non-financial performance), and to investigate the relationships among trust, satisfaction, commitment, financial and non-financial performance. This study also suggests franchise business or franchise system should be based on long-term orientation between franchisor and franchisee rather than short-term orientation, or transactional relationship, and proposes the most effective way of providing on-going support services by franchisor with franchisee thru symbiotic relationship among franchisor and franchisee Research Model and Hypothesis The research model as Figure 1 shows the variables on-going support services which affect the relationship quality between franchisor and franchisee such as trust, satisfaction, and commitment, and also analyze the effects of relationship quality on business performance including financial and non-financial performance We established 12 hypotheses to test as follows; Relationship between on-going support services and trust H1: On-going support services factors (product category & price, logistics service, promotion, information providing & problem solving capability, supervisor's support, and education & training support) have positive effect on franchisee's trust. Relationship between on-going support services and satisfaction H2: On-going support services factors (product category & price, logistics service, promotion, information providing & problem solving capability, supervisor's support, and education & training support) have positive effect on franchisee's satisfaction. Relationship between on-going support services and commitment H3: On-going support services factors (product category & price, logistics service, promotion, information providing & problem solving capability, supervisor's support, and education & training support) have positive effect on franchisee's commitment. Relationship among relationship quality: trust, satisfaction, and commitment H4: Franchisee's trust has positive effect on franchisee's satisfaction. H5: Franchisee's trust has positive effect on franchisee's commitment. H6: Franchisee's satisfaction has positive effect on franchisee's commitment. Relationship between relationship quality and business performance H7: Franchisee's trust has positive effect on franchisee's financial performance. H8: Franchisee's trust has positive effect on franchisee's non-financial performance. H9: Franchisee's satisfaction has positive effect on franchisee's financial performance. Method The on-going support services were defined as an organized system of continuous supporting services by franchisor for the purpose of satisfying the expectation of franchisee based on long-term orientation and classified into six constructs such as product category & price, logistics service, promotion, providing information & problem solving capability, supervisor's support, and education & training support. The six constructs were measured agreement using a 7-point Likert-type scale (1 = strongly disagree to 7 = strongly agree)as follows. The product category & price was measured by four items: menu variety, price of food material provided by franchisor, and support for developing new menu. The logistics service was measured by six items: distribution system of franchisor, return policy for provided food materials, timeliness, inventory control level of franchisor, accuracy of order, and flexibility of emergency order. The promotion was measured by five items: differentiated promotion activities, brand image of franchisor, promotion effect such as customer increase, long-term plan of promotion, and micro-marketing concept in promotion. The providing information & problem solving capability was measured by information providing of new products, information of competitors, information of cost reduction, and efforts for solving problems in franchisee's operations. The supervisor's support was measured by supervisor operations, frequency of visiting franchisee, support by data analysis, processing the suggestions by franchisee, diagnosis and solutions for the franchisee's operations, and support for increasing sales in franchisee. Finally, the of education & training support was measured by recipe training by specialist, service training for store people, systemized training program, and tax & human resources support services. Analysis and results The data were analyzed using Amos. Figure 2 and Table 1 present the result of the structural equation model. Implications The results of this research are as follows: Firstly, the factors of product category, information providing and problem solving capacity influence only franchisee's satisfaction and commitment. Secondly, logistic services and supervising factors influence only trust and satisfaction. Thirdly, continuing education and training factors influence only franchisee's trust and commitment. Fourthly, sales promotion factor influences all the relationship quality representing trust, satisfaction, and commitment. Fifthly, regarding relationship among relationship quality, trust positively influences satisfaction, however, does not directly influence commitment, but satisfaction positively affects commitment. Therefore, satisfaction plays a mediating role between trust and commitment. Sixthly, trust positively influence only financial performance, and satisfaction and commitment influence positively both financial and non-financial performance.

A Comparative Study on the Franchisor's Duty in Franchise Contract under the DCFR and Korean Law (DCFR 및 한국법상 프랜차이즈계약 가맹업자의 의무에 관한 비교연구)

  • This study primarily concerns the various franchisor's duties provided under the Draft Common Frame of Reference (here-in-after DCFR) in comparison with those under Korean law. It particularly focuses on the followings. First, it scrutinizes the rules on the scope of application in a comparative way, focusing on the following questions; what is the definition of a franchise contract and what are the essential elements of such contract. Second, it investigates in a comparative way the provisons as to the franchisor's contractual duties as follows; 1) a duty to collaborate actively and loyally and coordinate their respective efforts, 2) a duty to provide the franchisee with adequate and timely information before the contract is concluded, 3) a duty to grant the franchisee a right to use the intellectual property rights, 4) a duty to provide the franchisee with the know-how, 5) a duty to render the franchisee with assistance, 6) a duty to ensure the products ordered by the franchisee are supplied, 7) a duty to provide information during the performance, 8) a duty to warn the franchisee decreased supply capacity, 9) a duty to make reasonable efforts to promote and maintain the reputation of the franchise network. Its emphasis is particularly put on the rationals, the contents and the nature of such duties. Third, this study provides legal and practical advice to the contracting parties when they intend to insert either the DCFR or Korean law in their contract as a governing law.

  • This research is an empirical research that surveys the influence factors of franchisee's compliance and precedence, which have a direct effect on the success of franchisor, from the view of relation exchange theory. The results herein show that the trust of franchisees towards franchisor has a complete mediating effect between conflict and compliance. This means that in a franchise system, it is important to build trust in order to successfully manage franchisees. Trust built between franchisor and the franchisee has a dominating effect based on relationship even on domains not specified on the contract. Also, it is very important in that it decreases frequently occurring conflicts caused by disagreement of interests and unfair relationship of power, and effectuates compliance of franchisees. Such result is a meaningful theoretical and practical contribution in that it has for the first time domestically investigated the mechanism of relationship leading from conflict and trust to compliance of franchisees by methods of theoretical discussion and empirical analysis.

  • This study attempted to investigate the impact of relational characteristics just like level of perceived communication, support, conflict and justice between optical franchisor and franchisees on relational performance. Data collected from A Optical Franchisees supported two hypotheses such as communication and relational satisfaction, relational satisfaction and long-term commitment that were proposed. Another result between justice and relational satisfaction in this study shows that the other research and interpretation for this phenomenon was attempted. In accordance with the results, the following conclusion was made: it is very important to communicate with franchisor, and the core mean for that would be the enhancement of the long-term commitment of franchisees through the perceived relational satisfaction of franchisee's in optical franchise system. To accomplish this, to understand characteristics of franchisor and franchisees and fit of their characteristics should be preceded.

Determinants of Opportunism between Franchisor and Franchisee: Focusing on the Moderating Effect of Startup Experience

  • Purpose: This study examines the opportunism moderating effect by the startup experience in the relationship between franchisor and franchisees. In the case of a franchise system that has a continuous relational exchange transaction, relationship management is a very important activity because the relationship management between franchisor and franchisees improves the quality of the relationship. Nevertheless, there is insufficient of research on opportunism, which is a negative factor in managing the relationship between franchisor and franchisees in continuous relationship. Research design, data and methodology: This study, we explore the cause of opportunism based on transaction cost theory through prior research and establish a research model based by goal incongruity, uncertainty, information asymmetry, transaction specific assets, the relevance to determinant of opportunism and the startup experienced which is a moderating variable. To verify several hypotheses, the data were collected from 300 out of 1,760 domestic franchisees and analyzed using multiple regression analysis with SPSS program. Results: The findings are as follows. Goal incongruity did not affect opportunism. Opportunism increased as uncertainty increased, and as information asymmetry increased, opportunism increased. An opportunism decreased as transaction specific assets increased. Moreover, the findings show that startup experience only plays a moderating role in the relationship between information asymmetry and opportunism. Therefore, 4 out of 8 hypotheses were supported. Conclusions: The findings show that uncertainty, information asymmetry, and transaction specific assets are the determinants of opportunism. In addition, the results of the analysis of the moderating role of startup experience show that the less entrepreneurial experience, the greater the influence of information asymmetry on opportunism. Our findings mean that maintaining a successful relationship between franchisors and franchisees is possible when franchisors provide knowledge sharing, goal sharing, environmental sharing, and management information sharing to franchisees. In addition, the findings of this study shows that the contract content and management should be changed according to the entrepreneurial experience. In other words, the franchisors must share and integrate the accumulated franchisees' and franchisors' experience with the franchisees to create a synergy that can lead to successful bilateral relationship maintenance, which in turn reduces opportunism.

The Effects of Franchise CEO's Innovation and CSR Passion, and Customer Orientation on Perceived Service Quality, Customer Affection, and Commitment (프랜차이즈 기업가의 혁신 열정, 사회적 책임열정, 고객 지향성이 서비스 품질, 고객애정, 그리고 몰입에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose - The environment surrounding the franchise industry in recent years is a big threat to the franchise business. In this perspective, this study examines the effect of franchise CEO's Innovation, CSR Passion, and customer orientation(CO) on customers' perceived service quality(PSQ), affection, and commitments in the context of food-service franchise industry. This study suggests the guidelines on how franchisor uses their passion and customer orientation on customer to maintain and increase the commitments. Research design, data, and methodology - In order to achieve these purposes, research model and hypotheses were developed. Out of 500 respondents received through online survey, 449 respondents were used, because of 51 incomplete respondents. The data were analyzed using frequency analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, correlation analysis, and structural equational modeling with SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 23.0 statistical program. Result - The results of the study are as follows. First, innovation passion has a significant impact on PSQ and customer affection. And CSR passion have a significant impact on PSQ. Second, customer orientation has a significant impact on PSQ and customer affection. Third, PSQ has a significant impact on customer affection and sustainable commitment. Fourth, customer affection has a significant impact on behavioral commitment. Fifth, behavioral commitment has a significant impacts on sustainable commitment. Conclusions - The implications of this study are following as: Restaurants franchisor and CEOs should have a passion for innovation to continuously identify consumer needs and develop new menus and services that meet their needs. Second, franchisor and CEOs need to demonstrate the importance of creating the right environment, creating a fair business, and trying to create products in a given environment. Finally, franchisor and CEOs should demonstrate how to build relationships with customers and how to maintain positive feelings. In addition, it is necessary to appeal to the customers with enthusiasm and a customer-oriented tendency of the entrepreneur of the franchise head office in order to maintain the relationship with the customer and feelings.
